Andrelton Simmons left Thursday's Cactus League game against the Athletics with a strained left shoulder.

He'll undergo an MRI later tonight, though manager Mike Scioscia said it's just precautionary. Simmons set career-highs in hits (164), RBI (69), doubles (38), runs scored (77) and steals (19) last year while providing his usual stellar glove work at shortstop. Zack Cozart, who is slated to start at third base, could see reps at shortstop if Simmons' absence stretches into the regular season.

Jose Briceno hit a pinch-hit, walk-off homer in the 11th inning to give the Angels a 5-4 victory over the Rangers on Monday.

Briceno came in to hit for Francisco Arcia in the bottom of the 11th inning, and he deposited a Matt Moore pitch into the stands to give the Angels the victory and Briceno his fifth homer in 44 games. His season line improves to .237/.287/.386, and he should serve as a backup for the Angels or another MLB team in 2019.

Ketel Marte went 3-for-4 with a homer, triple and three RBI in a loss to the Dodgers on Monday.

Marte did all of his damage against Clayton Kershaw; tripling off of the southpaw in the first to score Eduardo Escobar, and crushing a Kershaw offering for a two-run shot two innings later. It's the 12th triple of the year for Marte, and the homer gives him 13 in an even 500 at-bats. Marte isn't a star by any means, but the 24-year-old has made strides with the bat, and his .254/.324/.430 line and ability to play multiple positions gives him some fantasy relevance.
Sep 25 - 1:42 AM

David Freese went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI in a 7-4 victory over the Diamondbacks on Monday.

Freese drove in the first run of the game with an opposite-field single in the first, and he hit his 11th homer of the season four innings later off of Robbie Ray to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth. Freese has been excellent since being acquired from the Pirates, with a line of .321/.441/.536 in 28 at-bats over 15 games with the Dodgers. He should be a solid weapon off the bench if/when the Dodgers clinch a playoff spot.
Sep 25 - 1:35 AM

Khris Davis went 1-for-5 with a solo homer in a 7-3 victory over the Mariners on Monday.

The solo homer is the 46th of the season, and it came off of Adam Warren to give the A's a 3-1 lead on a shot to center field. It's also the 120th RBI on the season for the slugger, who is having a remarkable season that is one of the key reasons that the A's are going to be playing into October.

Bryan Mitchell pitched 8 2/3 scoreless innings in a 5-0 victory over the Giants on Monday.

If only we’d seen this version of Mitchell earlier this year. The former Yankee hurler was excellent on Monday, allowing seven hits and striking out seven with three walks; two of them in the ninth inning. He’s now given up no more than one run in four of his last six starts. Unfortunately, those other two appearances have been clunkers where he’s allow a total of nine runs in 8 ⅔ innings. Still, there have been signs of encouragement over the last month-plus, which is more than we can say about most of the San Diego pitching staff. He goes again on Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
Sep 25 - 12:56 AM

Christian Yelich drove in two runs Monday in the Brewers' 6-4 defeat of the Cardinals.

Yelich plated the game-tying run on a groundout in the top of the seventh inning and then put the Brewers up two with an RBI double to left field in the top of the ninth. The National League MVP candidate made an early exit from Sunday's series finale against the Pirates after getting hit by a pitch on his right elbow, but he showed no ill effects from the plunking on Monday. Yelich is slashing .321/.391/.576 with 32 home runs, 34 doubles, 98 RBI, 21 stolen bases, and 109 runs scored in 141 games this season.
Sep 25 - 12:43 AM

Trevor Story doubled twice and scored a run in his return the Rockies' lineup Monday against the Phillies.

Story missed a week of action with a right elbow injury that was originally reported to be far more serious than it actually turned out to be. He showed no rust in his return, hitting his 41st double of the season in the bottom of the second inning and his 42nd double of the season in the bottom of the fourth as the Rockies went on to win 10-1. The star shortstop is slashing .289/.344/.552 in 150 games played for Colorado.

Corey Kluber struck out 11 batters over seven scoreless innings Monday in the Indians' 4-0 blanking of the White Sox.

Kluber cruised through the punchless Pale Hose lineup with ease, scattering four hits and one walk in the 108-pitch outing. He also struck out 11 batters in a start against the White Sox last week. The 32-year-old right-hander is now 20-7 on the season with a 2.83 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 216/32 K/BB ratio in 210 innings. He'll probably make an abbreviated appearance this weekend in Kansas City to get tuned up for the ALDS.
Sep 24 - 11:09 PM

Nathan Eovaldi struck out a season-high 10 batters over five innings in the Red Sox’ win over the Orioles on Monday.

Eovaldi gave up just one run on four hits and did not walk a batter over five stellar frames. The 28-year-old right-hander is 3-3 with a 3.29 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 44/12 K/BB ratio in 11 appearances (10 starts) since being traded to Boston on July 25. This was likely his final start of the regular season and it remains to be seen what his ultimate role will be for the Red Sox in the postseason. This latest gem builds additional momentum towards Eovaldi starting either Game 3 or Game 4 of the Red Sox first-round playoff series. However, he could also be utilized as a multi-inning weapon out of the bullpen if necessary.
Sep 24 - 11:00 PM

Mookie Betts went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and a stolen base in the Red Sox' 6-2 win over the Orioles on Monday.

Betts connected on an 81-mph slider from Orioles starter Dylan Bundy, launching a two-run homer -- his 32nd of the year -- in the second inning. He also singled and swiped second base -- his 29th steal of the year -- in the fourth inning. He’s been on an absolute tear at the plate, racking up seven extra-base hits, including three homers, over his last three games. The 25-year-old outfielder is just one stolen base away from becoming the third hitter in major-league history to bat above .340 with 30 homers and 30 steals in a single season. Rockies sluggers Larry Walker and Ellis Burks were the last to accomplish the feat in 1997 and 1996, respectively. He’s slashing a surreal .343/.434/.639 with 125 runs scored, a career-high 32 homers, 80 RBI and 29 stolen bases in 604 plate appearances.
Sep 24 - 10:38 PM

Bryce Harper recorded his 100th RBI of the season in the Nationals' 7-3 defeat of the Marlins on Monday.

It came on a run-scoring sac fly in the bottom of the fourth inning that was followed by back-to-back home runs from Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto. Harper finished the night 1-for-4 with the big RBI and a run scored. This is the first 100-RBI campaign for the 25-year-old impending free agent superstar.
