Jorge Alfaro went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored as the Phillies held off the Orioles 5-4 on Thursday.

Alfaro had a big two-run double in the fourth inning before providing what would end up being the decisive run with a solo dong in the sixth. The homer was his sixth in 68 games this year, giving him 21 RBI and 22 runs scored. The 25-year-old is hitting .253/.301/.398 and remains a viable, if not preferred, fantasy option at a barren catcher position in deep mixed and two-catcher leagues.

According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, Hyun-Jin Ryu will "most likely" accept the Dodgers' one-year, $17.9 million qualifying offer.

The deadline for players to accept or decline their qualifying offers is Monday at 5 p.m. ET. Ryu posted an exceptional 1.97 ERA this past season for the National League champions, but a severe lat strain limited him to 82 1/3 regular-season innings. Yasmani Grandal, Patrick Corbin, Bryce Harper, Dallas Keuchel, Craig Kimbrel, and A.J. Pollock are the other players who have to make QO decisions.

Jayson Stark of The Athletic reports that the Yankees are doing "extensive" background work on Manny Machado.

As Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports, teams always do background checks on potential acquisitions. It's the word "extensive" that stands out here. Rosenthal reports that manager Aaron Boone, scouts and front-office members have been making calls on the 26-year-old. There's been added scrutiny with Machado after being fined for his shenanigans during the NLCS and some perceived lack of hustle, but Rosenthal also reports that teammates like him. You can't blame them for doing their due diligence, anyway.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Astros are one of the clubs talking to the Mariners about a trade for James Paxton.

Rosenthal also reiterates his previous report that the Yankees are in on talks for Paxton and that the market for the left-hander has been "active." Injuries have often been an issue for Paxton, but he has two years of control left and is coming off a season that saw him post a 3.76 ERA and 208/42 K/BB ratio across 160 1/3 innings.

Juan Soto slugged a solo home run and scored three times for the MLB All-Stars as they fell to Samurai Japan on Saturday.

It was the second day in a row that the youngster hit an opposite-field home run in the series. The phenom outfielder turned 20 years old two weeks ago. He burst upon the scene as a teenager to hit .292/.406/.517 with 22 home runs and 70 RBI in 116 games for the Nationals this year. He will be a hot commodity in all fantasy league formats this spring and is deserving of an early first-round pick in start-up dynasty drafts.

Matt Chapman was named as the winner of the Platinum Glove in the American League on Friday, recognizing the top overall defender in the league.

This certainly doesn't come as a surprise, after Chapman registered 29 defensive runs saved at the position during the 2018 season, which was 19 more than any other third baseman in the American League. What's crazy, is that he and Nolan Arenado (the National League winner of the award), were teammates at El Toro High School in California.

Joe Mauer officially announced his retirement from Major League Baseball on Friday after 15 seasons.

Mauer indicated that the decision came down to his health and his family, explaining that the risk of another concussion was too great and that his desire to play was outweighed by the possibility of another injury. The first overall selection from the 2001 draft, Mauer spent all 15 seasons of his big league career with his hometown Twins. A six-time All-Star, Mauer slashed .306/.388/.439 with 143 home runs for his career. He also captured the American League MVP Award in 2009, where he hit a ridiculous .365/.444/.587 with 28 homers and 96 RBI. He was the recipient of three Gold Glove awards behind the plate and tacked on five Silver Sluggers as well.

Jon Heyman of Fancred reports that the Mets "are expected to investigate" a possible trade for J.T. Realmuto.

The Mets looked into the possibility of trading for Realmuto last offseason, as well, although no substantial talks ever took place. Whether they get more serious about Realmuto this winter remains to be seen, as his cost is up following a monster season and the Mets' farm system remains middling. The Mets are also looking at free agent catchers Wilson Ramos and Martin Maldonado.

Jon Heyman of Fancred reports that the Yankees met with the Indians about Corey Kluber and Carlos Carrasco at the General Manager Meetings.

The Yankees have also reportedly discussed James Paxton with the Mariners, and they're in the mix for free agent hurlers like Patrick Corbin and J.A. Happ as they look for the best route to improve their rotation. The Indians reportedly are looking to cut some payroll this winter, so dealing a Kluber or Carrasco seems possible even though both pitchers are under control at relatively favorable terms.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Yankees are one of the teams that have discussed a James Paxton trade with the Mariners.

General manager Jerry Dipoto is reportedly willing to listen to trade offers on just about all of his players, and Paxton is arguably his best trade chip. The left-hander is entering his penultimate year of arbitration eligibility this offseason after posting a 3.76 ERA and 208/42 K/BB ratio across 160 1/3 innings in 2018. There surely would be a number of clubs interested in him if Seattle gets serious about shopping him.
Nov 9 - 3:14 PM

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Cubs are open to trading Kris Bryant.

Olney writes that the Cubs "have indicated to other teams they are willing to discuss trade proposals for almost all of the players on their roster, including Bryant." In other words, this is more about the Cubs simply being open-minded about exploring all possibilities rather than them being motivated to trade their star third baseman. It's true that long-term contract talks between the two sides haven't gone anywhere, so Bryant being dealt at some point can't be ruled out. However, he's under team control through 2021, so it seems unlikely he'd be going anywhere anytime soon even as he's coming off a disappointing season.

Christian Yelich, David Peralta and Nick Markakis were the NL outfield selections for Silver Slugger awards on Thursday.

The full list of NL winners: C J.T. Realmuto, 1B Paul Goldschmidt, 2B Javier Baez, 3B Nolan Arenado, SS Trevor Story and German Marquez gets the pitcher's nod with Yelich, Peralta and Markakis in the outfield. Yelich has a spectacular year after being traded from the Marlins, and it would be a tremendous upset if he didn't take home the National League MVP next week.
