Brett Gardner homered twice, driving in three runs, as the Yankees outlasted the Indians 7-4 on Thursday.

Gardner socked a two-run homer off Indians starter Corey Kluber in the third inning and tacked on a solo job in the ninth. The homers give him nine on the year, upping his RBI total to 31 with 53 runs scored atop the potent Yankees lineup. Gardner has lost a step from his heyday but he's still got fantasy relevance in that high-powered Yankees lineup, batting .257/.349/.408 with nine steals to go with those nine dingers.

Christin Stewart went 2-for-4 with a pair of homers and six RBI to lead the Tigers to an 11-8 win over the Royals on Thursday.

Stewart crushed his first major-league home run, a two-run shot off Royals starter Jorge Lopez in the opening frame, and followed it up with a go-ahead three-run blast in the third inning. He also picked up an RBI with a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning. It was a monster performance from the 24-year-old outfielder, who hit .264/.364/.480 with 23 home runs and 77 RBI in 122 games for Triple-A Toledo before being called up earlier this month. He’s showcased an impressive blend of pitch recognition and plate discipline in his brief major-league debut, walking in 13 percent of his 46 plate appearances this month. It’s an extremely small sample size, but Stewart hasn’t looked overmatched in his first exposure to big-league pitching. He's one of the most exciting outfield prospects in fantasy baseball.

Wilmer Flores has arthritis in both his knees and is done for the season.

The good news is, he's expected to be ready for spring training. Flores was sent back to New York on Wednesday to have his ailing knees checked, and the check showed early onset arthritis in both knees. His year ends with a relatively disappointing 11 homers and 51 RBI, hitting .267/.319/.417 in 126 games.

The Braves will skip Sean Newcomb's next scheduled start.

Instead, Mike Foltynewicz and Anibal Sanchez will start Saturday and Sunday, respectively, on regular rest. The southpaw began the year like a house on fire but has shown some signs of wear in recent weeks, posting a 6.75 ERA in August and owning a 6.08 ERA through three September starts. A strong final outing could get Newcomb's season ERA below 4.00, a nice way to end what was a breakout year in many respects for the 25-year-old.

Michael Fulmer underwent successful surgery Thursday to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire told reports that Fulmer is expected to be at full strength by the beginning of spring training next February. The 25-year-old right-hander posted a disappointing 4.69 ERA and 110/46 K/BB ratio over 132 1/3 innings with the Tigers in 2018. He was probably going to be a trade candidate this winter, but those numbers and the late-season knee injury have likely torched his market.
Sep 20 - 3:50 PM

Asdrubal Cabrera (calf) is back in the Phillies' starting lineup Thursday versus the Braves.

Cabrera only wound up missing two starts with a Grade 1 calf strain. He will play shortstop and bat third Thursday night against right-hander Kevin Gausman.
Sep 20 - 3:37 PM

Jeimer Candelario (back) remains out of the Tigers' starting lineup on Thursday.

Candelario is still working through lumbar spine spasms and it's unclear how much he's going to be able to play down the stretch. Ronny Rodriguez will get the start at third base and bat sixth Thursday versus the Royals.

Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the Rangers "are contemplating replacing" manager Jeff Banister after the season.

Banister is under contract through 2019, but the Rangers are playing out the string on a second consecutive losing campaign and Wilson writes that club officials "have started to wonder if he is a fix in the long-range plan." Wilson's sources cite "communication issues" with players as another possible reason for his potential firing. No final decision has been made yet, but usually when these types of rumors start blowing it doesn't end well for the subject of them.

Rays recalled OF Austin Meadows from Triple-A Charlotte.

Acquired from the Pirates on July 31 as part of the Chris Archer trade, Meadows slashed .344/.396/.771 with 10 home runs and 22 RBI in 27 regular-season games with the Durham Bulls before helping to lead them to the Triple-A National Championship Game. He is not starting Thursday night against the Blue Jays, but the 23-year-old outfielder should see some action down the final stretch in Tampa Bay.
Sep 20 - 3:02 PM

Trevor Cahill (back) is scheduled to return to the A's rotation Sunday against the Twins.

Cahill has been sidelined since September 9 due to an upper back injury, but he threw a successful bullpen session on Wednesday and is on track to handle the Athletics' series finale versus Minnesota. The 30-year-old right-hander holds a solid 3.77 ERA and 1.21 WHIP through 102 2/3 innings this season with Oakland.
Sep 20 - 2:34 PM

A's manager Bob Melvin told reporters Thursday that he's hoping Sean Manaea (shoulder) can pitch at some point in 2019.

Manaea underwent surgery Wednesday to correct an impingement and repair a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder. Melvin said the team should have a clearer timetable on the overall recovery by next spring. The 26-year-old southpaw seems certain to miss the first half at least.
Sep 20 - 2:30 PM

Gio Gonzalez held the Reds to zero runs on two hits through six innings and was rewarded with a win on Wednesday.

He surrendered a pair of singles and a pair of walks while striking out five in the victory. The former National has pitched well in two of his three starts since joining the Brewers in the middle of a pennant race. For the season he is 9-11 with a 4.28 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 30 starts. He is a back-end starter in fantasy terms. He is hard to trust on a daily basis and should only be used against weak-hitting teams. He lines up for one more start in the regular season, which will come in St. Louis against the Cardinals on Tuesday.
