Norm Benning remains confident he'll secure the financial support required to enter his #57 Chevrolet in all 22 truck events this season.

"The economy is hurting everybody," said Benning, who was 21st in the truck standings in 2012. "The more money I have, the faster I go," said Benning, who had a two-year deal with SoBe before the company was sold to PepsiCo. "We leased top-notched engines, so every little bit helps. I'll be disappointed if I don't do a top 10, if not a top five, at Daytona," said Benning, a commercial jet pilot. He doesn't have to qualify. "Regardless if I don't get a dime, I'm going down to win that race. I'll spend the money myself. It'll be a huge loser for me financially, but I don't care.(Pittsburgh Tribune)-jayski.com

Martin Truex Jr. posted a lap of 188.679 mph and failed to advance to the final round of qualification for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He will start 15th.

His fans should not worry too much, however. Truex started 17th last fall in the Bank of America 500 and still won that race. He started eighth in the spring and finished third.

Parker Kligerman posted a lap of 185.103 mph and qualified 32nd for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

One car withdrew from the race, so Kligerman was not in jeopardy of going home. Still, it was a moral victory to know that he had the speed needed to make the show on time.

Clint Bowyer posted a lap of 187.279 mph and failed to advance to the second round of qualification for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He will line up 28th.

Bowyer qualified among the top 10 in both races last year, but he slipped to 14th in the Coke 600 and was 27th in the fall. He has been much improved this year, however, and should be able to challenge for a top-10 – which means he will earn positive place-differential points.
May 24 - 7:42 PM

Ross Chastain missed transferring into the second round of qualification for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway by .025 seconds, but he earned his career-best qualification effort and will line up 25th.

Chastain’s fastest lap in Coke 600 qualification was 187.624 mph. Chastain qualified 28th last week at Kansas Speedway and finished 26th, so this could be a good omen.
May 24 - 7:37 PM

Kevin Harvick failed pre-qualification inspection and will roll off the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway grid from the rear.

That actually makes Harvick a better value in games that offer place-differential points. No one would discount his potential for winning the race.

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series regular Brad Keselowski, driving the No. 22 Fitzgerald Glider Kits Ford Mustang, had the best 10-lap consecutive average speed in the first practice for the XFINITY Series Alsco 300 at Charlotte (NC) Motor Speedway.

His average speed of 178.763 mph was best of the six cars that ran at least 10 consecutive laps on the track for this session. No. 7 Justin Allgaier (175.835 mph), No. 98 Chase Briscoe (175.469), No. 5 Michael Annett (174.418), No. 12 Austin Cindric (173.579) and No. 61 Kaz Grala are the rest of the drivers on this list.

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series regular Kyle Busch (No. 18 NOS Energy Drink Toyota) led the first practice session for the XFINITY Series Alsco 300 at Charlotte (NC) Motor Speedway.

A lap of 181.372 mph was the best of the 35 cars completing laps in this session. No. 22 Brad Keselowski, No. 23 Chase Elliott, No. 21 Daniel Hemric and No. 00 Cole Custer made up the rest of the top-five on the speed chart. The No. 78 Chevrolet, driven by Ray Black, was the slowest.
May 24 - 5:37 PM

Ryan Blaney posted the second fastest lap in Thursday’s practice session for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway with a speed of 189.673 mph.

Blaney has not typically qualified well at Charlotte. In six previous attempts, his best starting position was a seventh in this race last year. He also has not performed particularly well in race conditions with only one top-10 finish that came last fall.
May 24 - 3:55 PM

Denny Hamlin posted the fastest single lap in Thursday’s practice for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway with a speed of 190.134 mph.

Hamlin was the only driver to post a time in the 190s. This does not exactly make him a frontrunner for the pole, but he has led the field to green on two other occasions at Charlotte. He started first last fall before finishing fourth.
May 24 - 3:30 PM

Todd Gilliland picked up right where he left off. The second-generation racer was fastest in ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards open testing at Charlotte Motor Speedway in early May, and he's top of the board in raceday practice Thursday afternoon.

Gilliland, in the No. 54 Frontline Enterprises Toyota, circled the 1.5-mile track in 29.408 seconds, an average speed of 183.624 mph, all in preparation for tonight's General Tire 150. Gilliland, 18, is one of the few drivers in the field who has raced at Charlotte. He finished 10th in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race here last weekend.
May 24 - 3:00 PM

Aric Almirola has scored three top-15s in four races on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks this year.

His three strongest results all came in a narrow band of ninth (at Kansas Speedway) though 13th (Atlanta Motor Speedway). It is unlikely he will jump all the way into the top five this week, but could still be fantasy relevant under the right circumstances.
