Morgan Shepherd will miss the Nationwide Series DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona International Speedway.

The No. 89 team is outside the top 30 in owner’s points and not guaranteed a start in this weekend’s NNS race. His qualifying speed of 173.370 mph, 37th fastest, was not good enough to make the cut for the event.

Denny Hamlin posted the fastest single lap in the first practice session for the Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway with a speed of 94.068 mph.

Hamlin found something last year with a first and second-place finish on the road courses and apparently that has persisted into 2017.

Chad Knaus had his laptop stolen from his rental car prior to the Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway and reportedly has lost his race notes.

One suspects that he has a backup someplace. When strange things start happening to teams, momentum often shifts, however.

Matt Kenseth sustained mechanical failure with about 25 minutes remaining in the first practice session for the Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. He was 25th on the speed chart at the time with a speed of 91.846 mph.Somehow during the process, he blew his engine and will have to replace it before practice 2.

Kenseth reported that he had broken something in the suspension but it might also have been a brake issue. Kenseth is not a particularly strong road racer and cannot afford any failures. Kenseth will start from the rear of the field.

Austin Theriault (No. 52 Ken Schrader Racing Toyota) led the lone practice for the ARCA Racing Series Montgomery Ward 200 at Madison Int’l Speedway in Oregon, Wisconsin.

Ty Dillon had an off-course excursion about halfway through practice for the Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.

This is Dillon’s first trip to Sonoma and he has not exactly taken to the course yet. He was 28th fastest at the time, but slightly ahead of Chase Elliott and Erik Jones.

Kyle Benjamin (No. 18 Sport Clips Toyota) led the first practice session for the XFINITY Series American Ethanol E15 250 at Iowa Speedway.

The lap of 131.436 mph was the best of the 38 cars completing laps in this session. No. 19 Matt Tifft, No. 33 Brandon Jones, No. 22 Sam Hornish Jr. and No. 42 Tyler Reddick made up the rest of the top-five on the speed chart. The No. 52 Chevrolet, driven by Joey Gase, was the slowest.

Chase Elliott has made only two road course starts in his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. He finished 21st last years at Sonoma Raceway and improved to 13th at Watkins Glen International.

Elliott is not highly recommended this week, but road courses are a track type on which a switch occasionally seems to flip. Elliott could be a pleasant surprise, but there are more predictable options.
Jun 23 - 3:13 PM

Danica Patrick is still seeking her first top-15 on a road course after eight previous tries.

Some of her better efforts in IndyCar came on this track type, so that was quite a disappointment at the start of her NASCAR career. With a best of 17th at Watkins Glen International last year, she has not been a good fantasy value and owners will have to wait and see if she can show any improvement. .
Jun 23 - 3:02 PM

Denny Hamlin came within one lap of sweeping Victory Lane on road courses last year. He got stuck in the wall by Tony Stewart on the final lap at Sonoma Raceway before finishing second. He won Watkins Glen International.

Before one gets too excited about his odds this week, you should know that was the first time in seasons that he cracked the top 15. His previous 12 road course races averaged out to a 29.17 finish.
Jun 23 - 2:46 PM

Martin Truex Jr. was one of four drivers to sweep the top 10 on road courses last year with a fifth at Sonoma Raceway and seventh at Watkins Glen International.

Truex is not one of the first drivers who come to mind on road courses and that could play into fantasy players’ favor. He will be as far under the radar as it is possible for a driver with 10 segment wins.
