Ron Hornaday finishes third in season-opener

Starting fourth, his best start since Dover (2012), Ron Hornaday remained in the top-five for most of the 100-lap event, never falling out of the top-10 on the score board.

With a mix of strategy in the pits and patience on the track, Hornaday, scored third on the final restart with five laps to go, was poised to be a contender for his 52nd career NCWTS win at the end of the 250-mile event. On the final lap, an accident involving four trucks on the frontstretch froze the field. Hornaday would go on to take the checkered flag from the third position under caution, his best finish since Iowa Speedway.-NTS Motorsports

Tanner Berryhill’s qualifying speed was not good enough to make the field for the Nationwide Series History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

He ran a lap of 163.255 mph in the No. 17 Chevrolet. It was 43rd quickest but not quick enough to make the field for the race.

One of the ‘go-or-go-homers’ required to qualify on speed, he ran a 38th fastest lap in the No. 00 Toyota Camry. This was not good enough to make the 40-car field.

J.J. Yeley not in Charlotte NNS field

Sprint Cup regular (No. 36) J.J. Yeley will miss the Nationwide Series History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The No. 42 team is outside the top 30 in owner’s points and not guaranteed a start in this weekend’s NNS race. The qualifying speed of 176.916 mph, 36th fastest, was not good enough to make the cut for the event.

Steve Wallace last in Charlotte NNS field

Steve Wallace secures the last qualifying slot open to teams outside of the top 30 in owner points for the Nationwide Series race.

The No. 66 Ford Mustang driver’s lap of 177.276 mph was 35th fastest in qualifying for the the Nationwide Series History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He will line up 40th at the green flag. This is Wallace’s first Nationwide Series start of 2013.

Sprint Cup regular Matt Kenseth (No. 20) runs quickest Nationwide Series qualifying lap of the go-or-go-homer drivers.

Of the teams required to make the field on speed, the lap of 182.070 mph in the No. 18 Toyota Camry was the fastest. The qualifying speed puts him ninth in the lineup for the Nationwide Series History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Austin Dillon on pole for History 300

Austin Dillon won the Coors Light Pole Award for the 32nd Annual History 300 with a lap of 29.356 seconds, 183.949 mph.

This is the No. 3 Chevrolet Camaro driver's fourth pole in 54 NASCAR Nationwide Series races. This is his first pole and ninth top-10 start in 2013. This is Dillon's first pole in three races at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Johnson has best 10-laps in 2nd Cup practice

Jimmie Johnson had the best 10-lap consecutive average speed in the second practice for the Sprint Cup Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

His average of 188.348 mph in the No. 48 Chevrolet SS was best of the 14 cars that ran 10 consecutive laps on the track for this session. No. 24 Jeff Gordon, No. 56 Martin Truex Jr., No. 14 Tony Stewart and No. 27 Paul Menard are the rest of the top five on this list.

Kahne tops Charlotte second practice

Kasey Kahne led the second practice for the Sprint Cup Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

He ran a fast lap of 191.591 mph in the No. 5 Chevrolet SS. No. 78 Kurt Busch, No. 18 Kyle Busch, No. 88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. and No. 48 Jimmie Johnson rounded out the rest of the top 5 on the speed chart for this practice. Josh Wise in the No. 35 was the slowest of the 43 cars out on the track.

The lap speed of 190.826 mph in the No. 10 Chevrolet SS was 24th fastest; best of the 2013 ROTY contenders attempting to qualify for Sunday night’s race.
