Dale Earnhardt Jr. led his Duel in Daytona for most of the 150 laps, but a surge by Denny Hamlin and Austin Dillon relegated him to fifth on the final trip around the track.

Earnhardt was unwilling to put his car at risk in that final dash because he had already secured the outside pole with his speed in time trials. Regardless, he told reporters after the race that there was very little he could have done to block Hamlin’s run and likely would have been passed in the Daytona 500 as well.

Matt Kenseth finished fifth in his Can-Am Duel and will start the Daytona 500 in ninth.

Kenseth has not fared very well in recent Daytona races. In eight of his last nine attempts on this track, he finished worse than he started and most of those efforts ended outside the top 15. In last year’s 500 he had the outside pole, but slipped to 14th at the checkers. That cost 12 place-differential points in games that offer them.

Austin Dillon crossed the line fourth in the second Can-Am Duel at Daytona. He will start Sunday’s race 10th.

Dillon is another strong plate racer, which is great news in salary cap games that have been set with a full season in mind. He will be affordable and is almost certain to finish in the top 15 if he avoids the seemingly inevitable "Big One" crash.

Brad Keselowski finished fourth in the first Can-Am Duel at Daytona and will start the 500 seventh.

There were mostly familiar names at the front of the pack on Thursday and that suggests—merely suggests, mind you—that plate racing has become a little more predictable. One reason for this is "the swerve" that Keselowski has perfected: a manner of switching lanes while leading the pack to rob the other drivers of their forward momentum.

Team Penske has locked down a major portion of its NASCAR program by signing driver Joey Logano, crew chief Todd Gordon and sponsor Shell-Pennzoil to extensions that run through ''2022 and beyond.''

The phrasing of the new contracts announced Friday at Daytona International Speedway is a play on Logano's car No. 22. His existing contract ran through 2018, and the extension is believed to be a five-year deal through 2023. The partnership with Shell extends to Penske's IndyCar program, and Roger Penske said he's currently working on a contract extension with three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves.-Associated Press

With a result of 14th in his Can Am Duel at Daytona, DJ Kennington was the highest-finishing non-chartered driver in his heat and will start the Daytona 500 28th.

Kennington will be the open driver who starts closest to the front of the pack. Corey LaJoie starts 31st based on his Duel finish, while Brendan Gaughan and Elliott Sadler start on the final row based on their time trial speed. Kennington is not likely stay with the leaders, however, and there are better dark horses available.
Feb 24 - 11:46 AM

Reed Sorenson and Timmy Hill were the two drivers who failed to qualify for the Daytona 500.

Sorenson was wrecked by Corey Lajoie in his Duel; Hill experienced some sort of mechanical difficulty. Make sure that neither of these drivers is on your roster as a long-shot dark horse.
Feb 24 - 11:37 AM

Kurt Busch finished third in his Can-Am Duel at Daytona and will line up eighth in the Daytona 500.

Busch is one of the unsung heroes of plate racing. If not for a last-corner tap from Joey Logano in the 2016 Coke Zero 400, he would have a nine-race, top-10 streak going. He was wrecked in The Clash by Jimmie Johnson, but should be a good value if he stays out of trouble.
