Ryan Newman had high hopes for another strong showing Sunday at Phoenix, but an ill-handling racecar and a pair of right-front tire failures caused him to finish a disappointing 40th in the Subway Fresh Fit 500k.

From the drop of the green flag, he struggled with a loose-handling car. He managed to hold position inside the top-20 until a tire failure at lap 100 sent him into the outside retaining wall. The team made repairs and Newman rejoined the field just one lap down. Another tire failure at lap 142 sent the No. 39 Chevrolet into the outside retaining wall, leaving the racecar damaged beyond repair and Newman with a 40th-place finish, dropping him to 20th in points.-True Speed Communication

Chase Elliott has made only two road course starts in his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. He finished 21st last years at Sonoma Raceway and improved to 13th at Watkins Glen International.

Elliott is not highly recommended this week, but road courses are a track type on which a switch occasionally seems to flip. Elliott could be a pleasant surprise, but there are more predictable options.

Danica Patrick is still seeking her first top-15 on a road course after eight previous tries.

Some of her better efforts in IndyCar came on this track type, so that was quite a disappointment at the start of her NASCAR career. With a best of 17th at Watkins Glen International last year, she has not been a good fantasy value and owners will have to wait and see if she can show any improvement. .

Denny Hamlin came within one lap of sweeping Victory Lane on road courses last year. He got stuck in the wall by Tony Stewart on the final lap at Sonoma Raceway before finishing second. He won Watkins Glen International.

Before one gets too excited about his odds this week, you should know that was the first time in seasons that he cracked the top 15. His previous 12 road course races averaged out to a 29.17 finish.

Martin Truex Jr. was one of four drivers to sweep the top 10 on road courses last year with a fifth at Sonoma Raceway and seventh at Watkins Glen International.

Truex is not one of the first drivers who come to mind on road courses and that could play into fantasy players’ favor. He will be as far under the radar as it is possible for a driver with 10 segment wins.
