Dale Earnhardt Jr. is third in the standings with 119 points; 10 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson.

In the Kobalt Tools 400, Earnhardt Jr. stayed in the top 10 throughout the duration of the race to continue his strong start to the season. Junior's seventh-place finish was actually his worst of the season, which again indicates how strong he's been through three races. This week: In 26 career starts at Bristol Motor Speedway, he has one win, seven top fives and 12 top 10s. For point-paying races in the past eight years at Bristol, Earnhardt ranks ninth out of 47 drivers with an average place of 14.0.-NASCAR.com

Sprint Cup regular Ryan Newman wins the inaugural NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour non-points All-Star Shootout at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The race, scheduled for 40 laps with a 30-minute time limit, was shortened to 37 laps after a wreck involving series regulars Donny Lia and Patrick Emerling. The unofficial race results show Justin Bonsignore finishing in second place by a margin of just 0.151 seconds. Mike Stefanik, Ron Silk and Bobby Santos round out the rest of the top five.

Martin Truex Jr. entered last year’s Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond with a 10-race streak of sub-10th-place finishes on the short, flat tracks of New Hampshire, Phoenix, Richmond, and Martinsville. Since then, four of his last seven races on this track type ended in top-10s.

Truex also has a little momentum on his side with a 10th-place finish in this year’s Toyota Owners 400 in the most recent short, flat track race.

For most of his career, Carl Edwards was not at his best on short, flat tracks but he has reversed that trend in the past two years to earn two wins and five more top-10s in his last 11 starts at Phoenix, New Hampshire, Richmond, and Martinsville.

In the first practice session for the Camping World RV Sales 301, Edwards expressed displeasure with his No. 99 Ford, however, and he has done a good job of informing fantasy players about his struggles. He should be moved to a mid-range pick to use only after marquee drivers have been exhausted.
Jul 11 - 2:53 PM

In three starts at Phoenix, Martinsville, and Richmond this year Ryan Truex has been extremely consistent with results ranging from 30th to 35th.

In addition to these three races, Truex also finished 35th in last year’s Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond. Odds are good he will finish in this same range at New Hampshire, so fantasy players should plan accordingly.

Brian Scott leads the first practice session for the Nationwide Series Sta-Green 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The lap of 130.042 mph in the No. 2 Chevrolet Camaro was best of the 38 cars out on the track for this session. Sprint Cup regulars No. 42 Kyle Larson, No. 54 Kyle Busch, No. 22 Brad Keselowski and No. 20 Matt Kenseth are the rest of the top five on the speed chart. Carlos Contreras in the No. 23 Chevrolet was the slowest.
Jul 11 - 2:45 PM

Jeff Burton comes to New Hampshire Motor Speedway to start only his second Cup race of 2014. Last year he swept the top 10 with a third in the summer and an eighth in the fall.

Burton is undoubtedly going to be a little rusty after so much time out of the cockpit, but he is a good bet to finish in the mid-teens. This makes him a provisionally good value in games where he is priced correctly.
Jul 11 - 1:41 PM

Josh Wise has a best short, flat track finish of 35th so far this year; it came in the STP 500 at Martinsville.

The No. 98 organization has been the little team that could several times this year, but short, flat tracks are prone to streaks. Wise’s average finish in eight races at New Hampshire, Phoenix, Richmond, and Martinsville last year was 34.5 and that defines his potential for the Camping World RV Sales 301.
