Travis Pastrana matched his career-best finish of 10th, Saturday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Track activity for the Sam’s Town 300 was washed away on Friday, as heavy rain moved into the desert. As a result, qualifying was scratched on Saturday, in favor of an hour-long practice session. The field was set based on owner points, leaving Pastrana to start 31st. At one point in the race, he fell one lap down during a long caution-free run, but received the free-pass as the result of a Lap 140 caution. Pastrana advanced his way to the front of the field, ultimately matching his best finish and collecting his second top-10 in three races. The finish moved Pastrana up four spots to 11th in the NASCAR Nationwide Series points standings. -Roush Fenway Racing

Paul Menard posted the fastest single lap in the first practice session for the Pennsylvania 400 at Pocono Raceway. His fastest lap was 177.438 mph.

Menard logged only seven laps, which means he was working primarily on race trim. He had a solid run at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last week, however, and should be watched closely in Saturday’s practice to see how he performs on long runs.

During his weekly podcast earlier this week, Dale Earnhardt Jr. gave his fans an update on his health. "This process is going to take a little bit longer," he said—strongly suggesting he will not return to the cockpit next week. No announcement has been made about his replacement.

Since fantasy owners do not know who will be behind the wheel, it is impossible to determine the impact of Earnhardt’s vacancy. Junior was steadily declining in cap value before he announced his injury, however, so the current driver will probably be a better choice by comparison.

Kevin Harvick’s crew chief Rodney Childers has been suspended for one race as the result of a lug nut violation at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He will be replaced by Dax Gerringer.

The depth of this team is such that this would normally not impact them at all. However, Harvick has been so critical of his team recently that one has to wonder exactly how this will impact the dynamic. Childers may be more accustomed to dealing with the fieriness of Harvick.

In a test earlier this week, Brad Keselowski apparently lost his brakes on the frontstretch at Watkins Glen International and slammed the wall hard. He destroyed his car and raised concerns about the safety of this corner during his weekly media availability.

Keselowski has run incredibly well at the Glen in the past, but has not yet visited Victory Lane. He has three straight second-place finishes to his credit and was looking for that little something extra to get that one spot. Last year, he finished seventh in the Cheez-it 355 at the Glen

Even though this is Cole Custer’s first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start at Pocono, the #00 Chevrolet Silverado driver has experience at the "Tricky Triangle", winning the 50-lap ARCA event in August 2015. He led the final 18 laps.

The 18-year-old Californian earned his fourth top 10 of the season last week at Eldora, racing to a sixth-place finish on the dirt. Custer closed the gap at Eldora, jumping two spots to 11th in the points and just 14 points out of the eighth spot, the cutoff for the inaugural Chase for the NCWTS.-JR Motorsports

Six of Kyle Busch’s last seven attempts on flat tracks ended in top-10 finishes. That dates back to last fall’s Goody's 500 at Martinsville Speedway when he finished fifth. All but one of his top-10s was in the top five.

Busch also has recent momentum on his side with five straight top-12 results and last week’s Brickyard 400 victory. He is well worth any salary cap cost.
