Stanton Barrett does not qualify for the Nationwide Series Toyota Care 250 at Richmond International Raceway.

One of the ‘go-or-go-homers’ required to qualify on speed, he ran a 46th fastest lap of 117.596 mph in the No. 15 Ford. This was not good enough to make the 40-car field.

Kyle Larson has made two previous starts at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and so far he has not failed to crack the top 10. He posted the fourth-fastest time in final practice and could be en route to another strong finish.

Larson won the Eldora Speedway Camping World Truck Series race on Wednesday, which gives him a lot of momentum and confidence entering the weekend. Larson should be a dark horse to finish in the top 10 in the Crown Royal Combat Wounded Coalition 400 at the Brickyard.

Jamie McMurray hopes to regain the top 10 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time in five years. His last solid run on this track came in the 2011 Brickyard 400 when he finished fourth. He won the year previous.

McMurray’s best result since then was a 15th and that is the range where he practiced on Friday. He is coming off a solid run at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, however, and could defy predictions. He is a good fantasy pick only if he fits one’s final niche.

Michael McDowell improved by nearly 10 positions in Friday’s two practice sessions. He was 31st fastest in the morning session with a lap of 175.829 mph and was 22nd-best in the afternoon at 180.839.

Most drivers focused on qualification runs in the first session and race trim in the afternoon. Some notable drivers who McDowell passed included Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Matt Kenseth—all of whom should out-qualify him on Saturday. Still, jumping up the speed chart will contribute to a level of confidence.

Ryan Ellis and Josh Wise had the slowest time among the non-charter teams with an average ranking of 39.5 on the speed chart for the Crown Royal Combat Wounded Coalition 400 at the Brickyard on Friday. They will battle on Saturday to see which of them races and who goes home.

Wise might have a slight advantage because his time was posted in the first practice session, which had conditions closer to what the drivers will face on Saturday. In either event, these drivers will not be great values as they should only move up with attrition on Sunday.
Jul 22 - 9:25 PM

Ryan Newman posted the fifth-fastest time in the first practice session for the Crown Royal Combat Wounded Coalition 400 at the Brickyard on Friday and was fourth-fastest in Happy Hour. His best lap was set at 183.767 mph during his final trip around the track.

Newman’s first eight attempts at Indy began on one of the first four rows. Last year, he started last, but still managed to finish 11th. He won the pole in 2013 and started fourth in 2014, which suggests he will roll off the grid with the leaders this Sunday.
Jul 22 - 8:30 PM

Kevin Harvick posted the fourth fastest lap in the first practice session for the Crown Royal 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He was second fastest in final practice, which gave him consistency throughout Friday.

Harvick did not make a 10-lap run in either session, which suggests he was primarily working on race trim. Track position is important, but given the trouble this team has had in the pits, it is much more likely that he wants to give his crew an advantage on Sunday.
Jul 22 - 8:15 PM

Clint Bowyer had the slowest 10-lap average of 11 drivers who went that far in the final practice session for the Crown Royal Combat Wounded Coalition 400 at the Brickyard. His speed of 173.782 mph was set during his first 10 laps on the track.

Bowyer has been uneven this season and it appears that will not stop anytime soon. With only the 28th fastest single lap in final practice and 32nd in the first session, he is simply too great a risk.
Jul 22 - 8:09 PM

Chase Elliott posted the third-quickest 10-lap average in the final practice session for the Crown Royal Combat Wounded Coalition 400 at the Brickyard with a speed of 177.016 mph. That was set from his laps 19 through 28.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway is not typically kind to rookies, but Hendrick Motorsports has the experience to set this driver apart from the field. He will contend for a top-five, but is unlikely to win unless he has the right strategy at the end.
Jul 22 - 8:05 PM

Denny Hamlin had the quickest 10-lap average in final practice for the Crown Royal Combat Wounded Coalition 400 at the Brickyard among 11 drivers who went that far. His top speed of 177.938 mph was set during his laps 45 through 54.

Hamlin has been strong on flat tracks, but is typically better on the shorter versions, one-mile or less in length. Still, he has back-to-back top-fives and a sixth in 2012 to recommend him. If he qualifies in the high single digits or low-teens—and is therefore capable of earning positive place-differential points—he should be started.

Parker Kligerman (#05 Athenian Motorsports-Jive Chevrolet) won the Menards Pole presented by Ansell Friday afternoon at Lucas Oil Raceway for tonight's Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200 presented by Jive.

Kligerman, who was also fastest in the first practice session earlier, circled the .686-mile oval in 22.415 seconds, an average speed of 110.176 mph. In his only other ARCA start earlier this year, he won the pole and race on the New Jersey Motorsports Park road course. Kyle Benjamin, who was fastest in final practice, qualified second at 22.491 seconds (109.804 mph). Benjamin, in the No. 28 MDM Hillman-Ranier Racing Chevrolet, finished second last time out at Iowa.

Kyle Busch posted the fastest single lap in final practice for the Crown Royal Combat Wounded Coalition 400 at the Brickyard. His top speed of 184.619 mph was 0.093 seconds faster than Kevin Harvick.

This marked a great rebound for Busch after spinning out of the first practice session. Busch won this race last year after starting ninth and has never qualified better than seventh in 11 attempts. Track position matters though, and Busch wants to start closer to the front.
