Besides winning the race, Brad Keselowski and his team win two race awards in the Nationwide Series Toyota Care 250 at Richmond International Raceway.

Keselowski won the Coors Light Pole award for his 126.339 mph qualifying lap in the No. 22 Ford Mustang. Penske Engines won the Mahle Clevite Engine Builder of the Race award. Keselowski, a Sprint Cup regular, is ineligible for driver points in this series.

Brad Keselowski is still looking for his first Brickyard 400 top-five. His previous best was a pair of ninth-place finishes in 2011 and 2012.

Coming off wins in the last two unrestricted oval races should give him the momentum necessary to accomplish the feat. He has also been incredibly strong on flat tracks with a second-place finish in Pocono, a third at Phoenix, and a fourth at Richmond. Keselowski should be a lock for a top-five finish and will be on a majority of rosters.

Brett Moffitt will make his third Cup attempt this week at Indy in the No. 66 Michael Waltrip Racing entry. His lack of experience makes him hard to predict, but he should be watched closely.

It certainly appears as if this test driver for the organization is being groomed for a 2015 ride and the best way to get him exposure among sponsors is to enter him in marquee events. He needs to race conservatively and make the most of his opportunity, which could be worth a few positions to fantasy owners if attrition is heavy. Use him only if he fits a specific niche on one’s roster, however.

Kyle Busch looks to improve one position over his last two unrestricted speedway efforts. He finished second to Brad Keselowski at Kentucky and New Hampshire. This week, he hopes to shed his role as a bridesmaid and become the bride.

There is a lot to be said for entering a race like the Brickyard 400 with momentum on one’s side and Busch has been good there in the past. He enters the weekend with a four-race, top-10 streak but only one of those was a top-five. He finished second in the 2012 edition of this race and could be due a victory if the cards fall his way.
Jul 22 - 11:26 AM

Landon Cassill will make his fourth NASCAR Cup attempt at Indy this Sunday. His previous best finish was a 20th in 2011 driving for James Finch.

Cassill is not expected to finish that well, but if he can regain some of his early-season mojo on flat tracks he could be a better-than-average value. He finished 25th and 26th at Martinsville and Richmond respectively, but fell into the mid-30s at Pocono and New Hampshire in his most recent attempts.

Jimmie Johnson’s four Brickyard 400 victories have come in the past eight years, which means he is batting 0.500 in that regard. His most recent win came in 2012.

Johnson also has a second-place finish last year, but he has not been immune to trouble. Accidents, blown engines, and missed setups in the closing laps have sent him home outside the top 15 in half of his starts and worse than 30th on three of 12 occasions.
Jul 22 - 9:37 AM

Michael Annett will make his first Indy attempt this week, but fantasy owners can look to his other flat track efforts to help predict where the No. 7 Tommy Baldwin Racing Chevrolet will finish.

Three of his five attempts on minimally-banked tracks this season ended in the 30s, but there is a reason to be hopeful that he will finish better in the Crown Royal 400. His Pocono 400 effort ended in a 20th-place finish and both tracks are measured and 2.5-miles. That extra room should allow Annett to steer clear of trouble.

Kasey Kahne’s overall results at Indianapolis Motor Speedway have been consistently in the high single digits or teens, but he is capable of rattling off a top-five when the circumstances are perfect. He finished third in this race last year.

That was the culmination of a three-year streak in which he finished better in each successive race. His worst result in the past six years was an 18th in 2011 but that is countered by last year’s third. Since 2008 his average finish on the famed 2.5-mile oval is 10th, which will garner a lot of attention this week. Odds are good that he will stand up well to the scrutiny.
Jul 21 - 4:51 PM

Carl Edwards has been a consistent top-15 finisher for most of his Indy career and his recent record on flat tracks suggests he will probably repeat in that range in this year’s Crown Royal 400.

Eight of Edwards’ nine career attempts at Indy ended in results of 18th or better, but only one of these was a top-five. This year four of his five efforts on minimally-banked courses ended in a narrow band of results from eighth at Phoenix to 13th at Richmond and New Hampshire. Players can be relatively certain that he is going to finish in the high single digits or low teens this week and should plan accordingly.
Jul 21 - 4:30 PM

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is the only driver in the field with a perfect record of top-10s on the flat tracks of Phoenix, Martinsville, Richmond, Pocono, and New Hampshire so far this year.

Add in three top-10 finishes at the end of last year on this same track type and Earnhardt has a ton of momentum on his side. In 2013 the only time he failed to crack the top 15 on a flat track was at Martinsville in the spring, which makes him the closest to a sure thing fantasy owners will find.
Jul 21 - 4:07 PM

Martin Truex Jr. enters the Crown Royal 400 with back-to-back top-15 finishes. He was eighth in 2012 and 11th in 2013.

Truex is with a new team, but the Furniture Row entry earned a top-15 last year as well when Kurt Busch was behind the wheel. Better still, Truex is coming off a three-race, top-12 run on the flat tracks of Richmond, Pocono, and New Hampshire and that makes him one of this week’s most compelling dark horses.
Jul 21 - 3:45 PM

Jeff Gordon has not won at Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 2004 but six of his last seven attempts there ended in top-10 finishes.

Four of those efforts were top-fives including a fifth in the tire-killing 2008 contest, which suggests Gordon knows how to take care of his equipment in this marquee 400-mile affair. Fantasy owners should expect another top-10 from him this week.
