All has not been perfect for Trevor Bayne this year, but he has been consistent on unrestricted speedways. His four attempts in 2014 at Las Vegas, Texas, Charlotte, Michigan each ended in either a 19th- or 20th-place finish.

Notably, all three of his plate race attempts ended outside the top 30, but since dark horses abound on that track type fantasy owners could quickly compensate. Some players will note his recent bad run at Daytona, which could be a chance for astute owners to use him to differentiate their roster.

Conventional wisdom holds that flat tracks behave like road courses to some extent since drivers need to brake before entering the corners. Marcos Ambrose has long rejected that notion and his results at Indy are part of the reason why. His best effort there was a 16th earned last year.

Ambrose could hold a few surprises, however. Three of his last four results this year ended in top-15s. Notably his one dissenting result came last week on the flat New Hampshire Motor Speedway, but Ambrose could be a dark horse to score a top-15 if he practices and qualifies well.

Paul Menard’s 2011 Brickyard 400 victory stands alone among his Indy results. In seven starts on this track, that is his only top-10 to date.

Menard’s victory that year was aided by fuel mileage, but he had to be in a position to capitalize on the strategy. Three of his last four attempts on this track ended in the low teens, which makes him a provisionally strong value in games where he is priced correctly.

Before blowing an engine at Pocono and getting crashed at New Hampshire, Joey Logano had one of the best flat track records of the season with fourth-place finishes at Phoenix and Martinsville, as well as a victory at Richmond.

Before last week’s incident Logano had the second strongest car to his teammate Brad Keselowski so it should be easy to regain his place at the front of the pack. Momentum is a tricky force, however, and back-to-back 40th-place finishes on this track type could derail him. Logano should be a favorite to finish in the top five, but he should also be watch closely during the race for any signs of weakness that could impact his handicap next week at Pocono.

If his past flat track efforts this year are an indication, fantasy players should expect Reed Sorenson to finish somewhere in the 30s in the Crown Royal 400.

Four of Sorenson’s five flat track races ended in a narrow band from 31st at Phoenix to a pair of 34ths at Martinsville and Pocono. The only time he failed to finish in this range was because of a blown tire at Richmond. Sorenson is often overlooked in fantasy racing, but predictability is always welcome.
