The Toyota/Save Mart 350k at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway will mark Danica Patrick’s 26th career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start and her first at Sonoma.

Patrick has never started a stock-car event at Sonoma, but competed in seven IZOD IndyCar Series races with three top-10 finishes, including a fifth-place result in 2008. Of note, the IndyCar Series used two different layouts during those seven years, neither of which is the one currently in use by the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.-True Speed Communication

Aric Almirola finished 23rd and 21st in his last two flat track attempts at New Hampshire and Indy respectively.

Since these are also the two most recent races on the schedule that is the amount of momentum brings to this third consecutive flat track race. Look for another result in the low 20s in the Pennsylvania 400.

Greg Biffle will race chassis No. RK-890. It was last campaigned at Kentucky four weeks ago where it finished 14th.

Biffle climbed into the top-10 for only a handful of laps in the Quaker State 400 at Kentucky, so this chassis has hardly shown any real strength. Biffle should finish somewhere in the high teens or low 20s. He qualified 25th for the GoBowling.com 400.

Josh Wise has improved his performance on flat tracks this year. After finishing in the mid to high 30s at Martinsville, Richmond, and Pocono, he scored back-to-back 29th-place finishes at New Hampshire and Indy.

Those results will not get him on many rosters this week, but the team is heading in the right direction. If he shows slight improvement, he should continue to be watched when the series returns to another flat track.
Aug 1 - 8:13 PM

Clint Bowyer will race chassis 809 at Pocono in the Pennsylvania 400. It has been raced at Kansas this May and the first Pocono race in June.

Bowyer’s 5-hour Energy 400 effort at Kansas was disappointing with a 23rd-place finish but he apparently learned something to make the chassis better. He narrowly missed finishing in the top 10 in the Pocono 400 with an 11th-place finish.

Sam Hornish Jr. has the best 10-lap consecutive average speed in the first practice for the Nationwide Series U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway.

The average speed of 129.356 mph in the No. 54 Toyota Camry was best of the three cars that ran 10 consecutive laps on the track for this session. No. 5 Josh Berry (128.101 mph) and No. 44 Hal Martin (124.582 mph) are the others on this list.

Chase Pistone leads the first practice session for the Nationwide Series U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway.

The lap of 132.142 mph in the No. 31 Chevrolet Camaro was best of the 34 cars out on the track for this session. No. 54 Sam Hornish Jr., No. 7 Regan Smith, No. 62 Brendan Gaughan and No. 42 Dylan Kwasniewski are the rest of the top five on the speed chart. Tanner Beryhill in the No. 17 Dodge was the slowest.
Aug 1 - 7:28 PM

Marcos Ambrose has earned only two top-20 finishes on flat tracks this year. He was scored fifth at Martinsville and 18th at Richmond. His last Pocono performance ended in a 24th-place finish.

Since then Ambrose finished 27th at New Hampshire and 22nd at Indy, which suggests he has settled into a pattern. A test earlier this week at Watkins Glen should improve his performance slightly because of the extra seat time.
Aug 1 - 7:22 PM

Tony Stewart will race chassis 14-707, which has a long career with its first start coming in 2012. It was also the car Stewart drove this June in Pocono when he finished 13th.

Stewart ran much stronger than that overall, however. He spent about 43 percent of the race in the top five and should have contended for at least a top-10. A late-race speeding penalty cost him track position late in the Pocono 400.

Joe Nemechek will make his 39th start this week at Pocono in the No. 66 Jay Robinson Toyota.

Nemechek has been making limited starts this season and turned the No. 66 car over to a variety of Young Guns and part time drivers. Pocono was the site of two of his 18 Cup top-fives, however, so he has fond memories of this place.
Aug 1 - 6:56 PM

Danica Patrick will use chassis No. 10-828 this week. It was last raced at Auto Club this spring.

Patrick has been able to improve her performance in this chassis. She first raced it at Homestead at the end of the 2013 season and finished 20th. She was 21st in it at Las Vegas and then finally cracked the top 15 in the Auto Club 400. She finished 14th. Patrick should be expected to finish somewhere in the mid-teens this week.

If recent seasons are any indication, Denny Hamlin could struggle this week at Pocono. His latest three Pennsylvania 400 finishes were all 15th or worse. His most recent three Pocono 400s—the traditional name for the June race—ended in results of eighth or better.

Hamlin has been great on this track in the past, however, and he seems to have regained his flat track mojo with top-10s at New Hampshire and Indy. He should be considered a favorite to break that trend and score another top-10.
