With rain soaking the track earlier on Friday, NASCAR made the decision early to cancel qualification in order to give the drivers more time to practice.

That will put points’ leader Kyle Larson on the pole for the third time this year and the second as the result of rain. He was awarded the top spot at Martinsville and used that advantage to scoot out to an early lead. Mechanical difficulty sent him home 17th, however. When he earned the pole on time at Auto Club one week earlier, he won the 400-mile race.

Erik Jones posted the single fastest lap in practice for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway with a speed of 127.843 mph.

This Jones’ first official start at Bristol, but he got some laps in relief for an injured Denny Hamlin a couple of years back. He seems to have put that experience to work. Rookies are not typically strong at Bristol, but then again Jones is not a typical rookie.

Joey Logano slapped the wall near the end of the first practice session for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Logano ran up on Danica Patrick in turn one, who slowed more than he anticipated. Forced to the outside groove, he hit the marbles at a high rate of speed and skittered up the track. The damage did not appear to be significant enough to cause him to roll out a backup.

In a day impacted by weather, Ruben Garcia Jr. still managed the make the most of the opportunity. Ripping around Bristol Motor Speedway in 15.861 seconds (120.976 mph), the native of Mexico City, Mexico, topped the lone practice session for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East.

The sophomore driver ran 55 totals laps in his No. 6 UTI/NTI Toyota. Finishing second quick was Jesse Little, the 20-year-old who is making his first East start of 2017 in his No. 97 NASCAR Technical Institute Toyota. He trailed Garcia by only 0.001 seconds. Harrison Burton was third quickest followed by Sheldon Creed and Ronnie Bassett Jr. in the top five.

With 22 minutes remaining in the first practice session for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, Chase Elliott spun coming out of turn four.

Elliott spun down nearly the entire straightaway and flat-spotted his tires, but did not contact either wall. The No. 24 was 15th on the speed chart at the time of the incident.

Justin Allgaier (No. 7 Cheney Brothers/Southern Foods Chevrolet Camaro) tops the speed chart in the Final Practice session for the XFINITY Series Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

He ran a fast lap of 124.429 mph. No. 20 Erik Jones, No. 42 Kyle Larson, No. 22 Ryan Blaney and No. 2 Austin Dillon, all Cup regular drivers, round out the top-five of the 40 cars out on the track. The No. 13 Dodge, driven by Carl Long, was the slowest in the final practice session.

DJ Kennington will once again pilot the the No. 17 Dodge entry as the 2017 NASCAR Pinty’s Series opens competition next month at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

In addition to seeking his third series championship Kennington and his DJK Racing team have formed an alliance with the Canada’s Best Racing Team (CBRT) group for the coming season. He will serve as a driver coach for rookie competitor Armani Williams. The 16-year-old from Detroit, Michigan, will drive the No. 28 for CBRT at six oval track events this season. DJK Racing will provide technical insight and assist with racecar preparations for each race weekend.

A familiar sponsor will reunite with NASCAR when the XFINITY Series takes to Richmond International Raceway on Saturday, April 29.

Mello Yello, the sponsor that became synonymous with the sport through the 1990 film Days of Thunder and subsequent sponsorships in the 1990s, will adorn the No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford driven by Darrell Wallace Jr. when the tour visits RIR’s spring race. While the paint scheme will look nothing like the paint scheme used by Tom Cruise’ Cole Trickle in the film, it is sure to bring a whirl of nostalgia to longtime fans. Kyle Petty, who was sponsored by the soda from 1991 to 1994, was on hand to announce the sponsorship with Wallace.

Jeffrey Earnhardt has finished just inside and outside of 30th at Bristol Motor Speedway in two starts with a 32nd last spring and a 29th in the summer.

The good news is that Earnhardt finished better than he started in both races. In the summer Bass Pro Shops Night Race, what he earned for his 29th were supplemented by nine place-differential points and that made a huge difference.
Apr 21 - 1:43 PM

Brad Keselowski posted back-to-back victories at Bristol Motor Speedway, but they are rapidly becoming a distant memory. They were earned in 2011/2012.

Since then, Keselowski has had more disappointments than successes. He scored two more top-fives (a third in 2013 and second in 2014), but four other results were 30th or worse.
Apr 21 - 1:35 PM

Austin Dillon has scored four top-15s in six Bristol Motor Speedway starts during his career.

Last year was a seesaw at Bristol, however; Dillon finished 26th in the spring and then earned a career-best fourth in the summer. Given his overall strong performance on this track and the fact that he is moderately priced in salary cap games, he should be considered a good value.
