Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (No. 17 Ford Fusion) is the top rookie finisher in the Sprint Cup IRWIN Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

He started 27th and finished 18th. He was named the "Rookie of the Race". The only other ROTY contender in the event was Danica Patrick (finished 26th). Stenhouse is 23rd in the 2013 point standings.

Momentum is not always sustainable. Last year Kasey Kahne finished ninth in the Daytona 500, but his next two starts on plate tracks ended well down the order in the 30s. With an average finish of 20.73 in 48 plate races, he sits in the front half of the field, however, at 17th.

One thing that made Kahne a worse-than-normal value in 2015 was the fact that he finished well worse than he started in the final three plate races and that cost fantasy owners place-differential points in games that offered them.

Martin Truex Jr. has the 18th-best average finish among fulltime active drivers on restrictor-plate, superspeedways with a 21.49.

Three of his 10 top-10s came last year and he kicked off the season with an eighth in the Daytona 500. Thirteen of his next 14 attempts after that success ended in the top 10 as well, including a fifth at Talladega SuperSpeedway, which underscores the importance of momentum. Truex should be watch closely during Speedweeks.

Paul Menard has a reputation as being a great place racer on the strength of eight top-10 finishes in 38 starts, but his overall numbers are a little less encouraging. His average finish of 21.5 places him 19th on the plate chart among fulltime, active drivers and makes him only average.

Menard can be a difficult pick most weeks on the big tracks because he hovers right in the middle. He could swing either direction and should only be on rosters when he is the best available driver in his cap range.

Casey Mears has earned 11 top-10 finishes in 50 starts on restrictor-plate, superspeedways, which is an average of 22 percent. He also has a pair of top-five results that includes a runner-up finish in the 2006 Daytona 500.

His poor results have been bad enough to rank him 20th on the list of active drivers on this track type, however, with a relatively modest result of 21.8. If he fits the final niche on one’s roster, he could be worth the roll of the dice.
Feb 5 - 11:44 AM

Jamie McMurray has the 21st-best average finish on the combined plate tracks of Daytona International Speedway and Talladega SuperSpeedway with a 22.00 in 53 attempts.

McMurray tends to rise in big races and he boasts four wins and another two runner-up finishes. He has not earned a top-10 in his last eight starts, however, and most of his bad luck has been caused by crash damage. Despite that, McMurray’s nine top-fives ranks him seventh on that chart among active, fulltime drivers.
Feb 5 - 11:42 AM

Aric Almirola has the 25th-best average finish on restrictor-plate, superspeedways despite winning the 2014 Coke Zero 400. Including one failure to qualify in 22 starts, his average of the big tracks is 23.32.

The good news is that Almirola is trending up and that could make him a decent value in the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway. Three of the five plate track attempts he made after winning in 2014 ended in either 15th- or 16th-place results.

57-year-old Bobby Gerhart, the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards veteran is attempting what no other human is at Daytona Int’l Speedway, which is competing for a starting position in the (ARCA) Lucas Oil 200, the NASCAR Camping World Truck and XFINITY Series events.

All three entries will be Chevrolets - a 5 on the ARCA car, a 36 on the truck and an 85 on the XFINITY car. His Bobby Gerhart Racing team is fielding all three entries, with a little additional help from a famous stock car racing family. "Brian Keselowski is on board to take care of the truck…we’ll do the ARCA and the XFINITY cars. Lucas Oil Racing TV will be on all three. Jason Jarrett will spot for me on at least two of the efforts…not sure on the third." said the winner of a record eight Lucas Oil 200s. In addition to the miles Gerhart will put on at Daytona, he'll also add a couple thousand more driving his transporter to and from the track.-ARCA Racing

Kyle Benjamin, a race winner in both the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and the ARCA Racing Series, will compete in select 2016 events in both series for Ranier Racing with MDM.

Starting with the Feb. 14 race at New Smyrna Speedway, the season opener for the K&N East, Benjamin will pilot the #40 Chevrolet for the recently announced pairing of Lorin Ranier, a longtime NASCAR driver development consultant, and the pre-existing MDM-Hillman Racing team. 2013 K&N East championship-winning crew chief Mardy Lindley will serve in the same capacity for Benjamin in all of his K&N East and ARCA starts. In ARCA competition, he'll sport the #28 Chevrolet, a number utilized by the likes of Buddy Baker, Benny Parsons, Cale Yarbrough, Bobby Allison and Davey Allison while driving for Ranier Racing.-Rising Star Management Group

Michael Waltrip will attempt to make his 114th start on a restrictor-plate, superspeedway when he climbs behind the wheel of the No. 83 BK Racing Toyota for Daytona 500 qualification. This team will have Matt DiBenedetto behind the wheel for the remainder of the season while the Young Gun climbs into a third entry for the organization during the opening week.

Waltrip has been successful on this track type with four wins and 15 top-fives. Since he will not be running the full season, he is a better than average pick in nearly any fantasy game, but his popularity will insure that he will not allow players to differentiate their roster from the competition.

Regan Smith could be one of the Daytona 500’s top dark horse picks this year; three of his last four attempts on restrictor-plate, superspeedways ended in top-10 finishes.

All of these came for modestly funded entries with two earned behind the wheel of James Finch’s No. 51 and another for Barney Visser. Tommy Baldwin Racing is capable of running in the top 15 and Smith is going to be moderately priced in most games, which will make him a solid value.
Feb 4 - 6:07 PM

If Chris Buescher races his way into the Daytona 500, it will be only the second time he has competed on a restrictor-plate, superspeedway at NASCAR’s top level. His only attempt last year came in the May Geico 500 at Talladega SuperSpeedway, where he finished 24th.

Buescher will be in solid equipment with Front Row Motorsports and this organization has a few aces up their sleeves on plate tracks. Expect a solid top-20 performance from them, but his ultimate finish will require him to stay out of trouble and that can be unpredictable for a rookie.
