Derek Thorn, from Lakeport, Calif., earned his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship with a 15th-place finish which was enough to hold off a trio of contenders.

Thorn carried a 16-point advantage over 2011 series champion Greg Pursley into the night with Cameron Hayley and Michael Self right there, as well. Thorn and NASCAR’s other 2013 touring champions will be honored at the NASCAR Night of Champions Touring Awards ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 14 at the Charlotte (N.C.) Convention Center in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Danica Patrick will run chassis 10-794 which has been utilized as a primary chassis on a few occasions and a backup several times this year.

This chassis last saw a complete race last September in Atlanta where she finished 21st. It was intended to be the primary at Bristol this spring but was sidelined following an accident in practice. Given the chassis’ checkered past, it might be best to leave Patrick in the garage on Sunday.

Most of David Stremme’s Indianapolis Motor Speedway success came behind the wheel of a Chip Ganassi Racing or Penske Racing South car, but he also managed to complete the distance in 2012 in the No. 30 owned by Timothy McSweeney. He finished 24th after starting 26th.

Flat tracks tend to be driver’s tracks, and while that is less noticeable in marquee races like the Brickyard 400, dark horses occasionally score top-25 finishes. Stremme will fly under the radar screen this week, which could provide an opportunity for fantasy players who are willing to roll the dice.

David Ragan has earned three top-20 finishes and one pole at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His best result was a 14th in the 2008 edition of this race that was plagued by tire failures.

Ragan’s last taste of success at Indy was in his last ride with Roush-Fenway Racing. He won the pole for the 2011 Brickyard 400 and finished 23rd. In two starts with Front Row Motorsports he has failed to crack the top 25, so fantasy players should look elsewhere for their dark horse pick.

Brad Keselowski will drive a new chassis this week at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His backup is the same that he last drove at Kansas in the 5-hour Energy 400.

Fantasy owners will need to watch him closely in practice to see how this new chassis will run. If he is forced into the backup, Keselowski finished 13th in the Kansas race after spending approximately half of the time among the top 10. That was not one of his more dominant races so fantasy owners should not expect the same level of performance he showed last week in New Hampshire.

Austin Dillon is still searching for his first top-10 on a flat track, but he has been relatively consistent. Three of his five efforts ended in the mid-teens with a worst of 27th at Richmond.

Dillon’s Pocono effort is the most representative and predictive. He qualified 11th for the Pocono 400, stayed on the lead lap, and finished respectably in 17th. Last week he was 14th on another flat track in New Hampshire.
