Snowball Derby defending pole-sitter David Ragan returns to the annual Super Late Model race in Pensacola, Fla., this year, looking to top last year's effort with a trip to Victory Lane.

Ragan will bring the same No. 77 Skuttle Tight/Fine Solutions Ford he ran last year at Five Flags Speedway, when he started from the front, led 31 laps, and later overcame a tire issue to finish eighth. He'll have to battle more than 60 other drivers -- a field that always includes the best of the best of short-track racers -- to earn a spot on the 37-car starting grid for Sunday's 300-lap race.-Breaking Limits

Denny Hamlin posted the fastest single lap in final practice for the Pure Michigan 400 with a speed of 197.878 mph.

Hamlin qualified third so there was not much concern about his overall speed. However, he was only 11th-fast in practice one and 17th in the second session.

With 34 minutes remaining in final practice for the Pure Michigan 400, Denny Hamlin spun off turn four and damaged his Toyota slightly in the grass. He will probably not need to go to a backup.

Hamlin had the fastest single lap in this practice session with a speed of 197.878 mph. The new low down force package is going to play havoc with drivers in race trim and this was a great example of why.

John Wes Townley (No. 05 Jive Communications/Zaxby's Chevrolet Silverado) won the Keystone Light Pole Award for the Careers for Veterans 200 Presented by The Cooper Standard Foundation & Brad Keselowski's Checkered Flag Foundation with a lap of 183.697 mph.

This is his second pole in 104 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) races. It is his second pole and fifth top-10 start in 2016 and his first pole in four races at Michigan International Speedway (MIS). Matt Crafton (second) posted his eighth top-10 start of 2016 and his eighth in 15 races at MIS. William Byron (third) posted his 11th top-10 start in 14 races this season.
Aug 27 - 11:19 AM

Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott both had top-seven times in the first practice session at Michigan International Speedway. Elliott qualified fifth; Blaney will start seventh. And notably, they had the second (Blaney) and third (Elliott) fastest laps in Saturday morning’s session. Blaney posted a lap of 201.427 mph; Elliott went 201.196 mph.

This is precisely the way they started the year. Both hit hard times during the summer, but last week’s Bristol Motor Speedway reversed their fortune with strong runs before crash damage hurt their efforts.
Aug 27 - 9:41 AM

Tony Stewart posted the fastest single lap in the Saturday morning practice for the Pure Michigan 400. His top speed of 202.122 mph was the first time this week cars went over 202 in a timed session.

The track was cool and had a lot of grip, but the conditions were not a good indication of what drivers will challenge on Sunday. Still, racers all faced the same conditions and Stewart’s speed is a positive for his handicap.

NASCAR Pinty's Series driver Alex Tagliani (No. 18 Chevrolet) won the Coors Light Pole Award for the Road America 180.

Driving the No. 22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang, he put up a fast lap of 109.866 mph. This is his fourth pole in eight NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) races. It is his second pole in two NXS races at Road America. Spring Cup driver Michael McDowell (second) posted his fifth top-10 in five NXS races at Road America. Justin Marks (third) posted his third top-10 start at Road America. Erik Jones (10th) was the fastest qualifying rookie.

John Wes Townley (No. 05 Jive Communications/Zaxby's Chevrolet Silverado) had the best 10-lap consecutive average speed in final NASCAR Camping World Truck Series practice leading up to the Careers for Veterans 200 at Michigan International Speedway.

The average speed of 182.287 mph was best of the four trucks that ran 10 consecutive laps on the track for this session. No. 33 Ben Kennedy (181.691 mph), No. 50 Travis Kvapil (174.941 mph) and No. 71 Enrique Contreras (154.579 mph) are the others on this list.
Aug 26 - 7:16 PM

Tyler Reddick (No. 29 Cooper Standard Careers for Veterans Ford F-150) led the final NASCAR Camping World Truck Series practice session for the Careers for Veterans 200 at Michigan International Speedway.

He ran a quick lap of 185.735 mph in this session. No. 11 Brett Moffitt, No. 21 Johnny Sauter, No. 19 Daniel Hemric and No. 98 Rico Abreu round out the top five of the 27 trucks practicing in this session. Enrique Contreras in the No. 71 Chevrolet Silverado was the slowest.
Aug 26 - 7:12 PM

Chase Elliott posted a lap of 201.303 mph to qualify fifth. Ryan Blaney had a lap of 201.202 mph and will start the Pure Michigan 400 seventh.

Both rookies should run well on Sunday on Michigan International Speedway and both are moderately priced in salary cap games. They should contend for top-10s.
Aug 26 - 6:24 PM

With a speed of 201.523 mph, Jimmie Johnson qualified on the front row for only the second time this season. His other front row start was a pole at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in July and he finished 12th.

Equally important, all four Hendrick Motorsports drivers advanced to the final round. This is important as an indicator of how well the organization is running this week. This is only the second time this season that HMS put all four in the final round.
Aug 26 - 6:20 PM

Joey Logano won the pole for the Pure Michigan 400 with a speed of 201.698 mph. This gives him a sweep of the Michigan International Speedway pole and is significant for another reason. Prior to this weekend, Logano had the record for the fastest pole speed in 2016 and it came in the June FireKeepers Casino 400 on this same track with a speed of 199.557 mph.

Logano hopes to sweep Victory Lane at Michigan this year after winning from the pole in June. If he accomplishes that feat, he will truly have a perfect record on this track. Logano’s other Michigan pole came in 2013 and he won that race as well.
