The dominoes continued to fall Wednesday in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour "Silly Season" as Mike Smeriglio III Racing announced it has reached an agreement with 2012 champion Doug Coby to fill the vacant seat of its No. 2 modified.

Coby, from Milford, Conn., moves over to MSR after three stellar seasons with the No. 52 Darling Racing Team that produced eight victories and three top-five points finishes, highlighted by the 2012 championship season. MSR announced on Nov. 8 that it had parted ways with driver Todd Szegedy, just days after it was reported that the Darling team Coby drove for was scaling back to a part-time schedule for the upcoming season.

There was a time in Doug Coby’s young racing career that the Milford, CT driver seemed to be on the fast track toward the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East division.

At that point, when Coby was winning championships in the Late Model (1998) and former Pro Stock division (2000) at Stafford Motor Speedway, the K&N Pro Series East was known as the Busch North Series. So it seems altogether fitting that the now 37-year old Coby will make his K&N Pro Series East debut in an event dedicated to celebrating the division from its Busch North Series days. Coby, a four-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion, will make his series debut in the NASCAR Busch North Throwback 100 for the K&N Pro Series East on July 8 at Thompson Speedway. Coby will drive a car for the Mooresville, N.C. based Calabrese Motorsports team, owned by part-time K&N East Series driver David Calabrese.
