Defending Daytona ARCA 200 winner John Wes Townley, in the No. 15 Venturini Motorsports Toyota, was fastest overall in both ARCA Racing Series test sessions Friday at Daytona Int'l Speedway.

Cunningham Motorsports, with a combination of rookies and veterans to include Tyler Reddick, Tom Hessert and Shannon McIntosh, followed on the speed charts. It was an extremely busy day at the "World Center of Racing" as 58 drivers posted time and speed during two sessions. Daytona testing continues Saturday and Sunday with two test sessions each day.

Alex Bowman avoided the last-lap melee triggered by a Brad Keselowski / Denny Hamlin crash and finished third in the Advance Auto Parts Clash.

Bowman was solidly in second until Kyle Busch banged into his side and stalled his momentum a few hundred yards from the end. Bowman does not have any firm plans for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in 2017 and this was an opportunity to showcase his talent.

Joey Logano won the first NASCAR race of the 2017 season with his victory in the Advance Auto Parts Clash on Sunday.

Logano won his first Clash in his ninth start and became the 22nd different driver to win this event. Logano assumed the lead when teammate Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin got together on the last lap in turn one. This is the third victory for Roger Penske in the specialty event.

The Daytona 500 will be Jeffrey Earnhardt’s second career plate race in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series; he finished 34th in last fall’s Hellmann’s 500.

Earnhardt made last year’s start for BK Racing and will be teamed up with a new organization this year. While anything can happen on a plate track, there are simply less risky options for a low-budget dark horse.

Kasey Kahne has been losing a lot of place-differential points at Daytona International Speedway; he has finished worse than he started in 12 of his last 16 attempts there.

In the past three years, he has lost 11.5 spots on average at Daytona including a 26-position loss in the 2014 Daytona 500. His last two efforts in this race, however, ended in a four-spot improvement to ninth in 2015 and a 13th-place finish from a 13th-place start last year.
Feb 19 - 12:37 PM

Matt DiBenedetto has made three previous starts at Daytona International Speedway and his best result came in his first attempt; he was 26th in the 2015 Coke Zero 400.

That is also the only time DiBenedetto finished on the lead lap on this course. He has not been much better at Talladega SuperSpeedway with only one result better than 25th and that too came in his first start on that track. DiBenedetto is trending down and should be avoided on plate tracks.

Multi-car wrecks, red flags and six cautions could not keep ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards championship contender Austin Theriault from finding his way to victory lane at Daytona Int'l Speedway.

Theriault, in Ken Schrader's No. 52 Orlando Longwood Auto Auction Chevrolet, kept himself up front most of the way and, as a result, out of harm's way to win the action-packed Lucas Oil Complete Engine Treatment 200 Driven by General Tire Saturday afternoon. He led just four laps, drove around the outside of Terry Jones on lap 73, and then held on up through lap 75, which ended up being long enough to win when the race officially ended five laps shy of the intended distance. The race didn't go back to green as a result of damage to the safer barrier that required repairs that would have taken longer to fix than the series' allotted time. With sprinkles in the air, Jones, in the No. 30 NORTRAX Toyota, finished second after leading 25 laps, more laps than anyone else.

The Advance Auto Parts Clash has been delayed due to rain.

The track officials and NASCAR are attempting to dry the track so it will still run Saturday night. Whenever the green flag waves, Brad Keselowski will lead the field to green after getting the pole in a random draw.

Kyle Busch scored top-five finishes in his first three plate races last year, but chose to ride in the back at Talladega SuperSpeedway in the fall and finished 30th—thus denying him a chance to sweep this track type.

Busch did manage to sweep the top five at Daytona International Speedway, however; he finished third in the 500 and second in the 400. His three-race streak on this course type was the first time since 2008 that he managed to post back-to-back top-10s on NASCAR’s plate track.
Feb 18 - 7:51 PM

Brad Keselowski won last year’s Coke Zero 400, but it was unlikely he was on many fantasy radar screens with four previous results outside the top 15.

Some players may have chosen to roll the dice on him, however, because three of four races from 2012 through 2014 ended in top-10s. Still, the balance is not in his favor with only four single-digit results in 16 career attempts.
Feb 18 - 7:50 PM

After two years of frustration, Kyle Larson finally earned the results he deserved at Daytona International Speedway; he swept the top-10 in 2016.

Larson ran well as a rookie and sophomore, but was involved in accidents in all four Daytona events with results of 34th or worse. Last year, he managed to stay out of trouble and finished seventh in the 500 and sixth in the Coke Zero 400.
Feb 18 - 7:49 PM

Ryan Newman won the 2008 Daytona 500; in the 17 races since then, he has been involved in accidents in 12 races.

Accidents are unpredictable, but when a racer accumulates that many and is involved that regularly, an alarm has to go off in fantasy players’ heads. Newman has been incident-free in two of his last three attempts, however, and scored an eighth in July 2015 and 11th last February.
