In preparation for the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season and revised rules that affect race car development and on-track testing, Hendrick Motorsports has named Kenny Francis to the new position of vehicle technical director and Keith Rodden as crew chief of the No. 5 Chevrolet SS team of driver Kasey Kahne. The roles take effect immediately.

Francis, 44, will oversee organization-wide car design and development with day-to-day management of Hendrick Motorsports’ chassis, body, research and development, on-track testing, vehicle engineering and simulation programs. Rodden will return to Hendrick Motorsports where he worked alongside Francis in 2012 and 2013 while the lead engineer for Kahne and the No. 5 team.-Hendrick Motorsports

The two-hour show (Dec. 18) is the ultimate sports award show for U.S. Hispanics honoring top athletes and teams from the leagues and sports that Hispanics care about most. Nomination is based on athletic performance and accomplishments in 2014. Almirola became the first Cuban American driver to win a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race when he captured his first win in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona in July.-Breaking Limits

Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) announced today that Matt McCall has been named crew chief for Jamie McMurray and the No. 1 team.

McCall will assume the role effective immediately to prepare for the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) season. McCall joins CGRFS from Richard Childress Racing where he most recently has been the race engineer for the No. 31 Chevrolet that made it to the Championship round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, ultimately finishing the season second in the championship point standings. McCall is also a former driver who has competed in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and ARCA Racing Series.-Chip Ganassi Racing

Jeff Gordon dominated the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but the team employed the wrong pit strategy at the end of the race and finished only 10th.

Gordon led the most laps with 161, earned NASCAR’s best Driver Rating at 138.2, and posted the best average running position of 2.052. The team decided to stay out on old tires when nearly everyone else pitted. Frequent cautions spoiled that plan and when Gordon eventually came in for tires he was mired deep in the pack.

For the first time in his 16-year career as a fulltime NASCAR driver, Tony Stewart failed to win a race during a season. He finished 43rd at Homestead.

Stewart’s best finishes this year were a pair of fourth on the short tracks of Martinsville and Bristol. He finished fifth at Auto Club this spring, but that was his only other top-five all season.

Jimmie Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus were called to the NASCAR hauler following their ninth-place finish in the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway for failing to follow a NASCAR directive.

During a late-race pit stop, they added a wheel spacer. This is legal to do, but rarely implemented because of the time that it takes. NASCAR wants teams to ask for permission before making this change and wanted to clarify that with the team. No penalties are forthcoming and Johnson retains his ninth-place position.

Two mistakes on pit road in the final 50 laps of the race proved costly for Joey Logano. The team dropped a lugnut and later failed to get the jack fully under the car with fewer than 20 laps remaining, which caused him to drop out of the top 10 to outside the top 20. He rallied to finish 16th, but that was the worst result among the Chasers.

An old auto racing adage proved correct where Logano was concerned. A driver has to lose a championship before he can win one and this was a valuable lesson learned by the No. 22 team.

Denny Hamlin spent more than 250 of 267 laps among the top five at Homestead in the Ford EcoBoost 400, but he got a bad restart on old tires with three to go and slipped to seventh in the final rundown.

Hamlin was a favorite to win the championship among several experts because of his late-season surge. While he came up short in the overall standings, he was easily one of the best values in fantasy games.

Ryan Newman came within one spot of winning his first race in the Championship round of the 2014 Chase, which would also have given him the NASCAR title. He raced among the top 10 all night and finished second in the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

This was his season-best finish. Newman finished third at Kentucky and Martinsville earlier in the season. For all the talk of the potential for a winless champion, it is notable that he would have had to win the race to win the title.
Nov 16 - 7:13 PM

Kyle Larson finished off the 2014 season with a 13th-place finish, which was his 24th top 15 in 36 races, and easily won the Rookie of the Year honors.

Larson did everything expected of him except win a race. Still, he came close three times at Auto Club, New Hampshire, and Kansas with second-place finishes. It is hard to imagine that he will not grace Victory Lane in 2015.
Nov 16 - 7:05 PM

Kevin Harvick charged from 12th to the lead with 15 laps remaining and won the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. With his fifth victory of the season, he also won the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship.

For most of the race, all four Chase contending drivers raced among the top 10—usually the top six. NASCAR could not have asked for a better end to their inaugural playoff style Chase.
