As time ran out on the first practice session, Jeff Gordon jumped from 24th to 22nd, moving the Greg Biffle to the bubble (24th). Biffle’s crew thought he was safe, but Chris Buescher was on track and logged a lap of 175.987 mph—jumping to 18th in the process, and bumping Biffle from round two. Biffle’s speed was 175.603 mph.

The knockout style qualification has made time trials entertaining. Notably Buescher’s fast lap came on his third run, which suggested that a little heat in the tires adds speed. Biffle will start the Pennsylvania 400 in 25th as Buescher continues to show incredible improvement in the Cup series.

Given his overall record on flat tracks, Hamlin is a more reliable pick. Starting position is not as critical on this track as others that are not as prone to strategy calls, but a good pit stall is always nice.
