Joey Logano had a seesaw race on Sunday, but he ended the Auto Club 400 on the upside with a fifth-place finish.

Logano was one of top values this week. He was unable to get through inspection for qualification and rolled off the grid 35th. Martin Truex Jr. gambled on old tires at Auto Club Speedway, just like Ryan Newman did last week at Phoenix International Raceway. It did not give him the win, but Truex was able to hang on for fourth.

Truex probably had one of the two best cars and on equal tires and it would have been an interesting battle at the front. Unfortunately, Truex slid through his pit stall on his final stop and lost track position, which caused the team to take the gamble. He won segment two of the Auto Club 400, however, and banked one more championship bonus point.

Clint Bowyer scored his first top-five in his last 53 starts when he crossed under the checkers third in the Auto Club 400.

"It felt good just to be a part of the camera shot again," he said after the race. Bowyer has been rebuilding his confidence this year after a difficult 2016. While he has missed the top five all year, he now has a four-race streak of top-15s and is still moderately priced enough in most games to be an excellent value.

Brad Keselowski started the afternoon with damage to the nose of his car on a stack-up at the green flag and a spin in the opening laps, but he battled back and finished second in the Auto Club 400.

When asked about how he got back into a challenging position for the lead, Keselowski told reporters that it was "just great perseverance by the team." If he had known just how badly his car looked, he might not have had the confidence to race as hard as he did. "This thing is tore to pieces," he said.

After finishing second three times in a row and third or better in five of his last six attempts, Kyle Larson finally got everything right and won the Auto Club 400.

Larson was among the top 10 all afternoon, but that has been the case on several occasions this year. At Auto Club Speedway, he had the right pit stop strategy, did not make a mistake on a restart, and was generally flawless. This is his second victory and his second consecutive win on a two-mile track.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. cut a tire in the pits. Because he will not start on the four tires on which he qualified, he will be forced to drop to the back to starts the race.

Earnhardt will have to give up his 18th-place position on the grid. He was not particularly fast in practice and should not be considered a good value to finish in the top 10.
