In five previous attempts at Pocono Raceway, Cole Whitt has finished better than he started in every event. This June he improved seven positions from a 37th-place qualification attempt before getting stranded in 30th with a Rear Gear failure.

Whitt qualified 36th for the Pennsylvania 400 with a lap of 171.716 mph. He may need a little help in the form of attrition to move forward in a sixth consecutive race and as a result is just on the cusp of being a good value.

Michael Annett qualified 39th for the Pennsylvania 400 at Pocono Raceway with a lap of 169.750 mph. That is more than nine miles per hour slower than pole sitter Martin Truex Jr. and he will likely be one of the first drivers lapped.

This is the fourth time in six starts Annett has started 36th or worse, but most points get paid when the checkers wave. In three of his previous five attempts, Annett finished in the 20s and earned positive place-differential points. If he is needed in order to stretch the salary cap at the top of the list, he should be considered.

Casey Mears posted a lap of 176.478 mph in qualification and will line up 20th on the Pennsylvania 400 grid at Pocono Raceway.

That might not seem incredibly impressive, but he will line up ahead of three of the four Hendrick Motorsports drivers. Confidence is built in a myriad of ways and outqualifying one of the storied teams on this track has to add a horsepower or two.

Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon will join Jimmie Johnson in the back half of the pack on Sunday at Pocono Raceway for the Pennsylvania 400. Kahne posted a lap of 175.901 mph and will roll off the grid 23rd; Gordon starts 24th with a lap of 175.706. Johnson starts just outside the top 20 in 21st.

Hendrick Motorsports is struggling across the board in recent weeks. If they are going to turn their season around anyplace, Pocono is a great place to do so. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Chase Elliott ran well here in June and Hendrick is the winningest team in track history.

Friday night in the Casey's General Store 150, Todd Gilliland topped the best drivers from both NASCAR K&N Pro Series (East and West) en route to the win in the combination race at Iowa Speedway. He led 116 laps for his fourth West win of the season.

It was the fifth victory of the season for the 16-year-old from Sherrill's Ford, North Carolina, who earlier in the year picked up an East win at Florida's New Smyrna Speedway. Gilliland took the green flag from the second starting position behind Kyle Benjamin and swapped the lead with him twice before taking the point from Benjamin heading into the halfway break. Benjamin finished second and was credited with an East win as the top finisher in the series. Earlier in the day, Benjamin won the 21 Means 21 Pole Award presented by Coors Light. Austin Theriault finished third, followed by Rev Racing and NASCAR Drive for Diversity driver Collin Cabre, and Ryan Partridge.

Martin Truex Jr. will lead the Pennsylvania 400 field to green Sunday at Pocono Raceway. His lap of 179.244 mph was good enough to outpace Carl Edwards’ 178.873. This is Truex’s 10th career pole.

Truex told pit reporter Parker Kligerman that this is the same car he had at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May. The Coke 600 was Truex’s latest pole and he was absolutely dominant in that event. That race was the first time in his career Truex won a race from the pole and he expects to add to that stat on Sunday.
