AJ Allmendinger hopes to pick up where he left off last year. His last three attempts on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks ended in a sweep of the top 15 and lead lap finishes.

Once Allmendinger won the road course race at Watkins Glen, his confidence seemed to improve and that had an impact on other track types as well. Allmendinger will almost certainly fly under the radar screen for most players, which could make him extremely useful.

In 10 previous attempts on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks in the Cup series, Michael Annett has finished better than he started eight times.

At Atlanta last year he advanced from 25th to 21st, but his last attempt at Texas showed even better improvement. He qualified 33rd and finished 22. This makes him a decent value in contests that award place differential points like the NASCAR.com Fantasy Live game.

Justin Allgaier progressively improved last year on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks and he looks to continue in 2015. It took nine attempts before he finished on the lead lap, but once he did he went the full distance at both Charlotte and Texas.

Allgaier was a good fantasy value on both tracks with a 15th in the Bank of America 500 and a 20th in the AAA Texas 500. He should be considered one of the top dark horses this week.

BK Racing continues to add to its driver roster, announcing Thursday that Matt DiBenedetto has joined the team and will compete part-time in the Sprint Cup Series this season.

Dibenedetto will initially split driving duties in the No. 83 BKR Toyota Camry with veteran driver Johnny Sauter, who raced the car and finished 19th in last Sunday’s season-opening Daytona 500. Dibenedetto is being immediately put into action, as he’ll attempt to qualify for Sunday’s QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. If he makes it, Dibenedetto will compete in his first career Sprint Cup race.

Jeff Gordon posted the fastest single lap in the afternoon test session at Atlanta. His top speed was 188.424 mph, which was posted early in his run. Gordon also posted the quickest 10-lap average in that session with a speed of 185.458 mph during his first 10 laps around the track.

The speeds were uniformly lower in the second session, but they were also tighter. Gordon beat Ryan Newman by only one-thousandth of a second in that session as NASCAR continues to search for parity among teams.

Kevin Harvick posted the quickest 10-lap average in the Thursday morning test session at Atlanta. He recorded a speed of 183.342 mph from his ninth through 18th laps.

Only four other drivers made long runs in the session, but two of them are among the weekly contenders. Harvick bettered Matt Kenseth (182.827 mph), Brett Moffitt (182.606), and Clint Bowyer (182.173).

Jamie McMurray posted the fastest single lap in Thursday morning’s test at Atlanta. His top speed was 191.549 mph, which was more than 1.3 mphs faster than teammate Kyle Larson who was second in that session.

With individual testing banned by NASCAR, these pre-weekend sessions give teams a chance to evaluate and become comfortable with the new aerodynamic package.

Casey Mears earned eight results in the 20s during last year’s 10 races on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks. The only time he failed to finish in that range was during the last two races; he was 31st at Charlotte and 18th at Texas.

His average finish on this track type was 25.1, which is about where fantasy owners can expect him to run again this week. If he fits a niche on a fantasy roster, he should be predictable.

When David Ragan takes the green flag at Atlanta in the Folds of Honor Quik Trip 500, he will be in the best equipment of his career since leaving Roush-Fenway Racing; in fact, with Joe Gibbs on the rise, it could be the best he has ever run.

Driving for Roush, he scored 10 top-10s and 22 results of 17th or better in 46 races on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks. He is still moderately priced in salary cap games and should be one of the best values of the week. Now is the time to lock him in.
