ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards veteran John Wes Townley has a secret weapon at Daytona; his name is Kevin Reed.

Townley, in a brand new Zaxby’s Chevrolet, returned to the Gatorade Victory Lane at Daytona Int’l Speedway with an old friend. Reed who crew-chiefed Townley to Victory Lane in 2013 at Daytona with a different team, reunited with Townley just in time to win the Lucas Oil 200 Driven By General Tire Saturday afternoon. The win not only reunited Townley with Reed, it was the first win for the new Tony Townley-owned Athenian Motorsports team. Eighteen-year-old rookie William Byron, in the No. 55 Liberty University Toyota, finished second, three lengths away (.209 seconds/margin of victory) at the final stripe. It was Byron’s career-first start at Daytona.

Kyle Larson was one of only two drivers who made it to the checkered flag in the Sprint Unlimited without significant damage. He finished the event fourth.

Notably both the winner Denny Hamlin and third-place Paul Menard were among the injured. The 2016 Sprint Unlimited was one of attrition.
Feb 13 - 10:24 PM

Defending Daytona 500 champion Joey Logano finished second in the Sprint Unlimited, which seems to show he is going to pick up where he left off last year.

Logano was one of only two drivers without significant damage on his car. That is what will be required to win the Big Show.
Feb 13 - 10:20 PM

A multi-car accident on the white flag lap ended the Sprint Unlimited. Denny Hamlin was leading at the time and won the exhibition race.

Hamlin was dominant at the end of the race and the caution did not contribute to his win. Several cars were mangled on the final lap including Matt Kenseth, Danica Patrick, Jamie McMurray, and Martin Truex Jr.
Feb 13 - 10:11 PM

Jamie McMurray bump-drafted Kasey Kahne into a spin late in the Sprint Unlimited. Kahne collected AJ Allmendinger in the crash.

Drivers are typically a little more aggressive in the Sprint Unlimited than the Daytona 500, but the cars are not going to be any more stable next week in the big show.
Feb 13 - 9:43 PM

Jimmie Johnson got a little bump from Paul Menard on lap 45 of the Sprint Unlimited. That pushed him into Casey Mears and ultimately caused the No. 48 to spin.

If one is going to wreck, the exhibition races are the time to do so, but Johnson gets added to the early retirees in this event.
Feb 13 - 9:27 PM

A multi-car accident triggered when Brian Vickers cut a tire marred the early stages of the Sprint Unlimited. When he came across the track, he collected Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, and Greg Biffle.

Sometimes there is simply no escaping bad luck.
Feb 13 - 9:06 PM

Brian Vickers’ crew chief has said that even though Brian Vickers has not been in a restrictor-plate superspeedway race since 2014.

The last time Vickers was at Daytona, he finished second in the summer Pepsi 400, however, so he is a solid plate racer. Unfortunately that doesn’t always keep drivers from experiencing trouble and Vickers cut a tire before triggering a multi-car crash

Penske Racing had an ace up their sleeve at the end of the final practice before Sunday’s pole qualification. Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, and Ryan Blaney ran in tandem to give them a faster speed than anyone who ran single runs.

This is critical for Blaney—who is in a Penske affiliated team. He is one of the Open drivers without a charter and guaranteed start. He needs to make the show on time and if qualification is rained out, he will get to start near the front of his Gatorade 150 Duel on Thursday. Additionally, today’s times will allow two drivers to get in on time if time trials do not happen.
Feb 13 - 3:33 PM

Kurt Busch and Kyle Busch headed the list of drivers making single copy runs with speeds of 194.877 mph and 194.686.

Qualification will be set by single car runs so these drivers are among the favorites to win the pole on Sunday. At the end of the session, the three Penske Racing drivers went out in tandem and swept ahead of them on the speed chart, however.
Feb 13 - 3:27 PM

Dale Earnhardt Jr. posted the fastest single lap in the first practice session for pole qualification. His top speed of 194.116 mph edged Joey Logano’s 193.853.

Earnhardt is the Pied Piper of plate racing and this adds to his mystique. He will be on most fantasy rosters.
