Jeff Gordon attempted to stretch his fuel mileage at New Hampshire, but a green-white-checkered finish extended the race and caused him to run out of gas under caution. He finished 26th in the Camping World RV Sales 301. Gordon was in second when he ran out of gas.

By comparison, Denny Hamlin had been running second prior to the caution with Gordon third, but the No. 11 pitted for fuel and was able to climb into the top 10. Still, the race was a qualified success for Gordon who lost a lap early when a right rear tire lost air during a long green flag segment. His willingness to gamble after scoring a victory this season reveals the danger of starting drivers with nothing to lose.

Joey Logano challenged him for the lead on the final lap, but came up just a little short. The stages are adding an extra dimension to the race and strategy and will impact fantasy owners greatly.

Austin Cindric’s first-ever start at Daytona International Speedway in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series came to end shortly after it began.

He started 18th and had just completed the first lap of the race when he was involved in a 14-truck pileup at the entrance to Turn 1. The driver of the No. 19 Draw-Tite Ford F-150 was on the verge cleanly making it through the incident, but at the last instant, was hit in the right-rear by the spinning truck of Noah Gragson, sending him into the wall. Following the hard hit, which resulted in the No. 19 being towed to the garage, Cindric was credited with a 27th-place finish and ranks 23rd in the NCWTS championship standings.-Brad Keselowski Racing

Chase Briscoe's first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race was an exercise in patience, as the 22-year-old persevered through a wild, wreck-filled season-opener to finish third at Daytona.

The No. 29 Cooper Standard Ford F-150 driver started 16th and spent much of the race in the less turbulent outside lane, avoiding the aggressive racing which led to four multiple-truck accidents. Solid pit strategy by crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. and coaching by spotter TJ Majors put Briscoe in the third position on the final restart. He methodically kept his Ford on the inside yellow line, which ultimately allowed him to narrowly avoid a 12-truck pileup and bring home a third-place finish.-Brad Keselowski Racing

Ben Rhodes (No. 27 Safelite AutoGlass Toyota Tundra) looked poised to get his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) win in Friday night's NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona.

He finished third in Segment one of NASCAR's new race format, 12th in Segment two and restarted the third and final Segment seventh on lap 46. On lap 52, Rhodes took the lead, leading the field twice for 20 laps. With four laps remaining in the 100-lap event, a caution was displayed for a spin in Turn 2, setting the field up for a green-white-checker flag finish. The Safelite AutoGlass driver restarted third and worked with teammate, Grant Enfinger to lead the outside line into Turn 2 on the final lap. Unfortunately, Rhodes would get sideways coming out of Turn 2, ultimately causing the "Big One" and relegating the sophomore driver to a 12th-place finish behind race winner, Kaz Grala.-ThorSport Racing

It does not count for his Cup records, but Ty Dillon has already earned one top-10 at the senior level with a ninth in the Can-Am Duel at Daytona.

Actually, make that two. Dillon finished seventh in relief of Tony Stewart last spring at Talladega. Dillon is expected to be the third driver in the Rookie of the Year battle, so there is no reason to avoid him in this wild card restrictor-plate, superspeedway race.
