In morning practice it was reported on Fox Sports 1 that Erik Jones has been fitted for a seat in the No. 18 as a precautionary measure in case Kyle Busch fails to complete the distance for fatigue or pain.

It is unlikely Busch will get out of the car Sunday night, but the Coke 600 is the longest race on the schedule. Teams do not achieve elite status without accounting for all eventualities.

In his first attempt in the No. 55 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota, David Ragan qualified seventh for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The last time he qualified that well on this track was in 2011 while driving for Roush-Fenway Racing and he finished second after starting eighth.

A few weeks ago we said that Ragan might actually perform better in the No. 55 than he had in the 18; there is less pressure on his shoulders now and the power band might better suit his style. It is too soon to form a bandwagon, but he could be a solid differentiator for one’s roster.

Jamie McMurray should be watched closely on Saturday to evaluate whether he has top-five potential. Last year he swept that spot at Charlotte Motor Speedway after starting 26th in May and 18th in October.

McMurray qualified 22nd for this week’s Coca-Cola 600, which places him in between last year’s pair of qualifications. In fall 2013 he started 25th, however, and could only rise to 19th.
May 22 - 10:57 AM

Chase Elliott will make his third NASCAR Cup start at Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend in the Coca-Cola 600. He qualified easily on time in 28th.

This is Elliott’s first attempt on a similarly-configured, 1.5-mile track in a points’ race, but he has looked comfortable so far in practice and during the Sprint Showdown last weekend. He should be considered a favorite to finish in the top 20 at least.
May 22 - 10:18 AM

Sam Hornish Jr. qualified 26th for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which has been about average for the No. 9 this year. His last four qualification attempts on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks have been either 26th or 29th.

Hornish finished 24th and 26th at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway respectively. Last week at Kansas Speedway he had his best run on this track type with Richard Petty Motorsports: Hornish finished 16th after starting 26th.

Jeff Gordon knows it will be difficult to match the feeling he gets racing after this season, but broadcasting could provide something close to it.

That was among the reasons Gordon decided to pursue broadcasting, leading to Thursday’s announcement that he’ll join Mike Joy and Darrell Waltrip in the booth for Fox’s broadcast of NASCAR Sprint Cup events. Gordon has signed a multi-year contract. He replaces Larry McReynolds, who had been in the booth since Fox began broadcasting Cup races in 2001. McReynolds will remain an analyst for the network.

Sprint Cup regular Austin Dillon has the best 10-lap consecutive average speed in the XFINITY Series final practice for the Hisense 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The average speed of 177.477 mph in the No. 33 Chevrolet Camaro was best of the 13 cars that ran 10 consecutive laps on the track for this final practice session. No. 5 Kasey Kahne, No. 6 Darrell Wallace Jr., No. Ryan Reed and No. 62 Brendan Gaughan are the rest of the top five on this list.

Ty Dillon tops the speed chart in the Final Practice session for the XFINITY Series Hisense 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/ Chevrolet Camaro driver ran a fast lap of 181.068 mph. No. 6 Darrell Wallace Jr., No. 62 Brendan Gaughan, No. 33 Austin Dillon and No. 22 Ryan Blaney round out the top-five of the 42 cars out on the track. The No. 74 Dodge driven by Mike Harmon was the slowest in the final practice session.
May 21 - 10:56 PM

Darrell Wallace Jr. leads the first practice session for the XFINITY Series Hisense 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The lap of 180.536 mph in the No. 6 Cheez-it Ford Mustang was best of the 40 cars out on the track for this session. No. 33 Austin Dillon, No. 2 Brian Scott, No. 60 Chris Buescher and No. 20 Erik Jones are the rest of the top five on the speed chart. Mike Harmon in the No. 74 Dodge was the slowest.
May 21 - 10:53 PM

Michael McDowell will make his second start in as many weeks after posting the 25th fastest time in qualification for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

McDowell qualified 31st last week on the similarly-configured, 1.5-mile Kansas Speedway and finished 36th, but the last time he rolled off the grid in this range, he finished 27th at Atlanta from a 24th-place gridding. Fantasy owners willing to roll the dice might find a great fantasy value in the No. 95.
May 21 - 10:20 PM

Jeb Burton, Mike Bliss, Travis Kvapil, Brendan Gaughan, and Jeff Green failed to find enough speed to make the Coca-Cola 600 and will have to watch from the pits Sunday night.

Make certain these drivers are not on your roster, but keep an eye on them for future races because they become greater bargains each time they fail to qualify.
