Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch will need to acquire charters from Michael Waltrip Racing to have one of NASCAR’s guaranteed 36 positions, according to NBC’s Dustin Long.

NASCAR has offered charters to teams that have run all of the full seasons since 2013 and both the No. 19 and 41 teams have not. Unless something strange occurs, however, look for them to be locked into the field soon.

In 42 starts. Kyle Busch has amassed the 15th-best average finish among active, fulltime drivers with a 20.38. He has not finished in the top 10 since October 2013, however, and that makes him a poor value at his salary cap.

Busch came close to finishing in the top 10 twice during that period, but both modest runs came on Daytona International Speedway’s sister track of Talladega SuperSpeedway. Still, Busch has earned nine top-10s on this track type during his career, which ranks him seventh on the active chart.
Feb 9 - 2:46 PM

From the time he finished third in the May 2013 Talladega SuperSpeedway race until last year’s fifth on that same track in the fall, Carl Edwards failed to crack the top 15 a single time in nine starts. That has contributed to an average finish of only 20.53 on the combined plate tracks.

Restrictor-plate, superspeedways are notoriously volatile, however, and Edwards ranks 16th among active drivers on this track type. He won’t be the worst option for the Daytona 500, but he will not be the best either.

If Bobby Labonte qualifies for the Daytona 500, it will be his 91st start on one of the restrictor-plate, superspeedways. Drivers simply don’t come with much more experience.

Labonte has one win, 12 top-fives (13 percent of the time), and top-10s in more than 25 percent of his starts. His best finish since running a part time schedule was a 15th in 2014, however, and he should be expected to land somewhere in the mid-20s this week.

Following confirmation that Jacques Villeneuve will race in this year’s NASCAR XFINITY series, the French-Canadian has told Motorsport.com he will be entered in a #27 Ford at Daytona this month.

The No. 27 is seen as symbolic, as that's the number which Jacques' iconic father Gilles Villeneuve made famous in Formula 1, 1981-’82. Villeneuve raced a No. 27 Bill Davis Racing Toyota at Daytona in 2008, but was punted into the wall during one of the Duels and failed to make the 500. He also raced this entry at Talladega (where he finished 21st) and Phoenix.
