Since winning the Coke Zero 400 and making claim to one of the Chase slots, Aric Almirola has finished in the 20s in his last two races. He finished 21st in the Brickyard 400.

After hitting the wall in qualification and starting at the back of the pack, it seemed unlikely that he would crack the top 25. He beat that projection by four spots, so his effort could be described as a minor success.

For the first time since Texas Motor Speedway this spring, Jimmie Johnson earned back-to-back top-10s. He finished seventh last week at Bristol Motor Speedway and was sixth in the Pure Michigan 400.

In his most recent streak before this weekend, Johnson won an event on the two-mile Auto Club Speedway and had three consecutive top-10s culminating in the fourth-place result at Texas. Darlington Raceway’s Southern 500 will be the real test of whether this team has reversed their fortune.

Kevin Harvick finished fifth in the Pure Michigan 400, which was his sixth straight top-10 on an oval track.

Harvick remains the best overall value in most salary cap games. His price tag can be restrictive, but when he fits a niche he is a no-brainer.

Ryan Blaney posted top-10 speeds in all practices and qualification for the Pure Michigan 400. He backed up his seventh-place start with a fourth-place finish at Michigan International Speedway.

All weekend we have been predicting Blaney and Chase Elliott would challenge for a top-five. Elliott finished second to Blaney’s fourth and now both racers are poised to go on another top-10 run. Darlington Raceway next week could provide a momentary blip for the Young Guns.

Brad Keselowski used some strategy to establish his No. 2 Team Penske Ford in the top five. Once there, he raced with the leaders for the final quarter of the Pure Michigan 400 and finished the third at Michigan International Speedway

Both Penske Racers were favorites this week, but Kez did not make a lot of noise early. He redeemed himself at the end, however, when the points mattered most.

Chase Elliott spun his tires on a late-race restart this June in the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway. He spun his tires on the final restart again this week and finished second for the second time in two starts on this track.

Elliott is one of the top points’ earners this week and his salary cap in most games was manageable. Elliott now has a 27-point advantage over the Chase bubble with two more opportunities to win during the regular season. He debuted at Darlington Raceway last year and suffered crash damage, however.

It took 99 starts, but Kyle Larson finally won his first NASCAR Sprint Cup race. He took the lead from Chase Elliott with less than 10 laps remaining and held off the charge from the rookie.

Everyone kept asking when Larson would win his first race because he kept coming close. He had top-five attempts ruined by accidents in the last two weekends and fell far down the points. Larson was in a must-win situation. With this victory he makes the Chase. All three NASCAR top-tier winners this week won their first race in their respective series with Brett Moffitt winning the Camping World Truck Series at Michigan and Michael McDowell winning the XFINITY road course race in Elkhart Lake.

Justin Bonsignore came up short at home in June. He wasn't going to let it happen again Saturday night.

The 28-year-old from Holtsville, New York, held off the charge of brothers Timmy and Shawn Solomito to score the victory in the Riverhead 200 at Long Island's Riverhead Raceway. It was a night of milestones for Bonsignore, who earned his 10th career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour win in his 100th career start. He kept the No. 51 Phoenix Communications Inc. Chevrolet out front for a race-high 117 laps.

Ryan Partridge won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts 150 at Douglas County Speedway (Roseburg, OR) Saturday night after a late race entanglement gave him the opportunity.

Partridge battled to stay in the top-three for 113 laps, falling as low as third. Todd Gilliland and Chris Eggleston were battling side-by-side for the top spot when they made contact causing them both to spin. Partridge managed to avoid serious damage and took control of the lead. Despite damage to his hood, the series veteran held off a charging Gracin Raz and Riley Herbst the remaining 36 laps to earn his second victory of the season. Raz and Herbst finished second and third, respectively.Noah Gragson, Julia Landauer, Gilliland, Eggleston, Blaine Perkins, Ron Norman and Nicole Behar rounded out the top 10.
