Marcos Ambrose posted the second fastest single lap in the final practice session for the Cheez-it 355k at the Glen. His top speed was 128.682 mph, which was only 3/1,000ths of a second slower than AJ Allmendinger’s best time.

Ambrose and Allmendinger should be considered co-favorites to win the pole on Saturday and the race on Sunday. They will be on a majority of rosters and cautious fantasy owners will neither gain nor lose many points if these drivers are activated.

Joey Logano had to overcome a late-race penalty in the Pure Michigan 400 when he left equipment outside his pit stall after coming in for a two-tire stop. Logano was forced to start at the back of the lead lap cars in 17th and barely squeaked into the top-10 with a 10th-place finish.

This kept a top-10 streak alive at Michigan International Speedway and extended it to eight consecutive. Logano will be highly regarded next spring at Auto Club Speedway and when the series rolls back to this course in June.

Denny Hamlin finished ninth in the Pure Michigan 400. This is his sixth consecutive top-10 this season—a streak that started with another ninth-place finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

During this streak none of Hamlin’s results have been a huge surprise with the exception of his Watkins Glen International victory. The next two races on the schedule will be held at two of his better courses. Darlington Raceway and Richmond International Raceway contribute to his streak.

On a day when his teammate Kyle Larson won to move the Chase bubble, Jamie McMurray had a strong points’ day. He started the Pure Michigan 400 eighth and finished in that same position.

McMurray remained 13th in the standings, but separated himself from Ryan Newman by nine additional points at Michigan International Speedway. Currently he has a 15-point cushion over the cutoff but needs his own victory in order to feel secure.
Aug 28 - 7:11 PM

Carl Edwards had a quiet Pure Michigan 400. He spent slightly more than 20 percent of the race in the top 10, but when the checkers waved over Michigan International Speedway, he scored a seventh-place finish, which was his third consecutive top-10 and his 18th such result on this track in 24 attempts.

Still, more was expected of Edwards on a track where top-fives were once common. Edwards needs to make a little more noise before he is placed-and-held, but he is doing a yeoman’s job.
Aug 28 - 7:06 PM

For the first time since Texas Motor Speedway this spring, Jimmie Johnson earned back-to-back top-10s. He finished seventh last week at Bristol Motor Speedway and was sixth in the Pure Michigan 400.

In his most recent streak before this weekend, Johnson won an event on the two-mile Auto Club Speedway and had three consecutive top-10s culminating in the fourth-place result at Texas. Darlington Raceway’s Southern 500 will be the real test of whether this team has reversed their fortune.
