JJ Yeley has made two previous starts on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks this year. Both of them ended in DNFs.

The latest DNF (for a blown engine) on a 1.5-mile course came in the No. 23 car at Kentucky Speedway. He will pilot that same ride this week. This team may simply be riding out the schedule to keep their charter intact, so they should be avoided until further notice.

Martin Truex Jr. has scored two wins and a second-place finish in his last three road course races.

Truex entered this year’s Go Bowling at Watkins Glen International with back-to-back wins at Sonoma and the Glen. He was chasing Chase Elliott in the final segment before running out of gas and coasting across the finish line second. If he stays out of trouble on the Charlotte Roval, he will be a top contender.

Kevin Harvick swept the top five in 2015’s pair of road course races, but he has been unable to repeat that feat since.

Harvick had two top-fives in 2015. The following year, he finished sixth at Sonoma and was 32nd at the Glen. He won the 2017 Sonoma race and finished 17th at the Glen. So far in 2018, he has a pair of top-10s in the two road course races he’s entered in Cup competition and needs one more to complete the sweep.

Erik Jones has been almost perfect on road courses in four career starts by earning three top-10s along the way.

Jones has gotten progressively better in every road course start. He was 25th in the 2017 Sonoma race and improved to 10th at the Glen that year. That was followed by a seventh at Sonoma this spring and a fifth at Watkins Glen. He is going to need a solid top-five and probably a win to advance to Round 2 of the playoffs.

Kurt Busch has finished 12th or better in his last 12 road course races.

In the past six years, Busch has finished worse than 10th only two times on road courses and his average is seventh. He is coming off back-to-back races in 2018 in which he finished outside the top 15 and needs to rebound before Round 2 of the playoffs begin.
Sep 24 - 3:01 PM

Kyle Busch enters this weekend’s Bank of America Roval 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway with eight consecutive top-10s on road courses.

Busch’s worst finish in the last eight road course races was seventh. He won the 2015 Toyota 350k and also won at Watkins Glen International as recently as 2013. With last week’s victory at Richmond Raceway, the pressure is off his shoulders and that could be the difference-maker on this tough track.
