According to former Kings beat writer Sam Amick, DeMarcus Cousins' reinstatement from suspension on Dec. 24 was "made unilaterally by the team's owners and went against the wishes and planned protocol of the team's front office."

Keith Smart was informed of the decision but was later "allowed" to bench Cousins for Wednesday's game, while GM Geoff Petrie, who has been with the Kings for 19 years, "was not a key part of the reinstatement process." Roughly speaking, this leaves us with a disgruntled (to be kind) franchise player who is being pressured to take the team's suggestion that he see a psychiatrist, a puppet coach whose rotations and game management defy logic, a GM who is reduced to a cipher now at the most critical junctures (and who is "all but certain" to leave the team after the season), and a pair of nouveau-broke millionaire owners who are trying to sell the Kings at an above-value price of $500 million on the pretext that a new owner could move it to a more lucrative market. At this point, the only dignified thing that could save the NBA's image here is for the other owners to pressure the Maloofs to sell the team to Sacto buyers.

Lionel Hollins said that he thinks Brook Lopez (foot) will be ready for opening night, but it will ultimately be up to the doctors to clear him.

Hollins added that he prefers Lopez be able to practice before the regular-season opener, but if he is healthy, he will play. This is an encouraging report, but given Lopez' extensive history with right foot injuries, he still remains an extremely risky top-50 selection. However, those willing to take the plunge could be rewarded handsomely as Lopez is set to be a focal point of the Nets offense. Lopez made it through just 17 games last season, but averaged 20.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game.

Rajon Rondo (hand) has been cleared for full contact, and he will be a full participant during Friday's practice.

"[Rondo will] go through the whole practice [Friday] and it will just be a matter of how big that pad is [on his hand]," head coach Brad Stevens said. "I think that’s the biggest thing moving forward. It’s really about getting hit or not. So obviously, see how he feels after this. We’ve got Saturday and Sunday off. Monday or Tuesday, we should know more." Things are looking positive for Rondo making a potential return for opening night; meaning Marcus Smart's value is going to take a substantial hit. Rondo will look to right the ship after a disappointing season last year, and he's a guy that can really light up the assist category. He's likely going to cost a mid-round selection, and he'll be a true risk/reward selection.

Victor Oladipo will be out indefinitely after suffering a facial fracture during Thursday's practice.

Oladipo received an accidental elbow to the face during Thursday's practice, and is set to undergo surgery on Saturday. This is a devastating blow for one of our favorite breakout candidates, and this news likely means that Evan Fournier will be the starting two-guard, with Ben Gordon seeing minutes off the bench. We'll wait for more news on this situation, but this bumps Victor out of top-60 consideration in standard leagues. It has been an offseason of injuries for the NBA this year.
Oct 24 - 10:45 AM

Anthony Davis returned from his wrist injury and played 21 minutes against the Mavericks on Thursday, scoring 13 points with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

He dodged a bullet from his sprained wrist on Monday, but he's good to go. In his last four, Davis averaged 20.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 0.8 steals in just 24.8 minutes per game. Yes, he can fill a stat sheet and is worth taking at the top spot of your fantasy draft, assuming you're OK with taking a risk.
Oct 24 - 12:16 AM

Spencer Dinwiddie looked fantastic in his pro debut during a 109-103 win over the 76ers, making 2-of-4 from the field for eight points with six assists and two 3-pointers in 16 minutes.

Not a bad way to start at all. Dinwiddie was a lottery talent last season, but his season was cut short at Colorado due to an ACL tear and it caused him to slide to the second round. He was coach Stan Van Gundy's first pick and chances are he could get minutes if the Pistons start losing a lot of games. To be clear, he's only an option in very deep leagues as a stash guy.
Oct 24 - 12:02 AM

Kyle Singler scored a game-high 19 points against the Sixers on Thursday with three rebounds, three steals and four 3-pointers.

Yes, this line comes with a grain of salt when "against the Sixers" is in the opening sentence, but Singler has made it clear he deserves minutes. If Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (knee) isn't healthy, the Duke product should be a factor in fantasy leagues. He's still not a terrific target in standard leagues at this time.
Oct 23 - 11:54 PM

Caron Butler scored 18 points with eight rebounds, two assists, one steal and two 3-pointers in 25 minutes against the 76ers on Friday.

He's a possible starter on opening night for the Pistons and coach Stan Van Gundy seems to like Butler for his range. Of course, he won't get many minutes given he's 34 and hurt a lot, so he's only a target in deeper leagues.
Oct 23 - 11:49 PM

Josh Smith flirted with a triple-double against the 76ers on Thursday with 17 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, one block and one 3-pointer in 33 minutes.

It was easily his best game and it came with Greg Monroe getting some rest. Smith still only made 38.2 percent from the field in his previous three games and his shot selection isn't much better, so he's still very unlikely to be above 45 percent this season. Plus, he's made just 47.6 percent at the line this month. Besides the shooting, Smith should be very good, so he's worth a look in the middle rounds.
Oct 23 - 11:32 PM

Nerlens Noel put up a massive line in his preseason finale on Thursday, scoring eight points with eight rebounds, one assist, five steals, five blocks and six fouls in 30 minutes.

Well, hello. Noel had been fairly quiet in the blocks category with just 1.7 blocks per game in his previous three, but tonight was just ridiculous. On top of that, he averaged 9.3 boards per game over his last three. On the down side, he did only shoot 15-of-37 (40.5 percent) from the field and 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from the line in the preseason. This monster game is probably going to bump up his ADP by a round or two, so you might have to pounce in the fourth round to get him. We'd probably prefer safer options for where he'll go and we'd like him a lot more in the fifth.
Oct 23 - 10:51 PM

C.J. Miles made 8-of-15 from the field for 23 points against the Hornets during a 88-79 win on Thursday, adding five rebounds, three assists, three 3-pointers and one turnover.

Giving C.J. Miles a heavy dose of shots is like taking a kid to a candy store, but he did cash in tonight. He seems like a good bet to be one of the primary scorers for the Pacers and has a chance to make 2.0 triples per game. His field goal percentage will probably be sub-par, but he's a capable late-round pick in standard leagues for his upside.
Oct 23 - 9:56 PM

Al Jefferson blocked six shots in 35 minutes against the Pacers on Thursday with 15 points, seven rebounds and one steal.

He's shot the ball horribly this preseason, but who cares? Jefferson getting big minutes again is a huge positive and his ankle soreness shouldn't be a huge concern right now. However, he's had a lot of foot/ankle issues, so prospective fantasy owners shouldn't be too aggressive in targeting him. In other words, he's more of a mid-second pick with some risk.
