Jason Richardson (knee) will not play in Tuesday's game against the Bucks.

Richardson didn't even make the trip to Milwaukee as he deals with right knee synovitas. He's now missed five of the last 14 games and we can't count on him to sustain health. His situation appears chronic. Defensive specialist Royal Ivey draws the spot-start at shooting guard in order to match up with the Bucks' tiny backcourt of Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis. Dorell Wright and Nick Young will operate in a hot-hand situation off the bench.

Heat PF Josh McRoberts (toe surgery) returned to practice on Tuesday.

McRoberts is the uncontested starting PF for Miami this season, with Udonis Haslem as his most prominent backup, so minutes should be plentiful. He may not control the ball as often as he did last year but fantasy owners can still rely on him for a unique combination of 3-pointers, assists and some defensive stats, all with admirably few turnovers.

Kevin Martin admitted that he "cut corners" during training camp and regular-season practices last season.

"I'm not going to be able to get away with the things I did the past five or six years because I have to be ... that big-brother type that has to do things the right way and not just get by on talent," Martin said. His honesty is commendable but the fact that he's been taking shortcuts for "five or six years" can't be welcome news for the franchise's paying him millions of dollars per season. Regardless, the veteran is poised to start at SG for coach Flip Saunders and he's vowed to lead by example. Fantasy owners should wait until the late rounds to target K-Mart.
Oct 1 - 10:37 AM

76ers second-round pick K.J. McDaniels opted to sign a non-guaranteed one-year contract, which will make him a restricted free agent in 2015.

It's a highly unusual move for a rookie, but McDaniels is betting that he can stay healthy and quickly land a bigger payday in free agency. A starting job at SG or SF is within his grasp and he'll essentially be in a contract year as a rookie, which is all the more reason to target him in the final rounds of typical fantasy drafts.
Oct 1 - 10:00 AM

Coach Byron Scott said Kobe Bryant plans on playing in all eight preseason games this month.

Kobe is looking to get the rust off, get his timing and get his legs ready for the regular season. There is some talk of his minutes coming down, but Bryant should still be around 32 per game. If he can stay healthy, he'll be well worth the third-round ADP. Of course, that's the risk you take.
Sep 30 - 9:18 PM

JaVale McGee (leg) and J.J. Hickson (knee) are expected to participate in some of practice on Wednesday.

Coach Brian Shaw said his center spot is a competition with Timofey Mozgov. Shaw said Mozgov has the edge on offense and McGee has the edge on defense. McGee didn't get much run in his brief action in 2013-14, but his upside in blocks makes him someone to watch at camp.
Sep 30 - 8:49 PM

Solomon Hill joined George Hill, Rodney Stuckey, David West and Roy Hibbert in part of Tuesday's practice.

C.J. Miles (calf) missed part of practice today, so this isn't a concrete report. However, Hill seems to be the favorite for minutes at small forward this season. He has a decent 3-point shot and made 39 percent from beyond the arc in each of his last two seasons at Arizona. If he can capitalize on his opportunity, Hill is a dark horse for production in his sophomore season and is a possible sleeper in standard formats.
Sep 30 - 7:48 PM

Blake Griffin said after Tuesday's practice, "It felt great to be out there, my legs feel 100 percent and I'm good to go."

This is noteworthy since Blake skipped Team USA this summer due to a very minor back injury, but he enters the preseason without any health concerns. He's a borderline first-round pick this season, and is even more valuable if you're not bothered by his sub-par (but improved) FT percentages.
Sep 30 - 6:26 PM

DeMarcus Cousins' goal this season is to have no more than five technical fouls, according to a picture posted by teammate Reggie Evans.

DMC tied for the league lead with 16 techs last season, and during the 2013-14 season he had a league-high 17 technicals, four ejections and three flagrant fouls. He was focused and effective with Team USA this summer and may finally be turning the corner, maturity-wise, which makes him an even more appealing fantasy option in the latter half of the first round.
Sep 30 - 5:50 PM

Rockets coach Kevin McHale said that the PF position is "open for competition," citing the need for more rebounding and physical defense.

"We had two of the top rebounders in the league last year with Omer [Asik] and Dwight [Howard] and we were still like 20th in rebounding. What does that say about the other guys? Not much," McHale said. Jones will need to fend off Donatas Motiejunas during training camp, but he started 71 games last year and is the favorite to do so again this season. In other news, the Rockets intend to pick up Jones' $2.5 million fourth-year contract option, which is an easy decision, but they won't do so until the Oct. 31 deadline.
Sep 30 - 5:38 PM

Jeff Green and Gerald Wallace may earn minutes at PF early in the season, according to Celtics coach Brad Stevens.

Green reportedly got stronger this season and aims to be a leader for Boston, but fantasy owners would settle for an improvement on last year's lousy 41.2 percent shooting. The possibility that he and Wallace might play some PF spells trouble for Brandon Bass, especially if Jared Sullinger is starting at PF on opening night.
Sep 30 - 5:13 PM

Jameer Nelson wore a white jersey during the Mavericks' first practice on Tuesday, suggesting that he'll start at PG ahead of Raymond Felton and Devin Harris.

Felton will open the season with a four-game suspension and Harris is better suited as a backup combo guard, which basically hands the job to Nelson by default. "He’s just got a grit and toughness about him that we really need on this team this year," said Carlisle, who described Nelson as a "natural leader." As a starting PG he'd be a decent source of assists and 3-pointers, making him worth a look in the final rounds.
