Nets hired Jason Kidd as head coach.

He retired as a player on June 3 and it's shocking that he took less than two weeks to get a coaching gig with a team that made the playoffs. Kidd must have had a terrific interview with the Nets to get the nod over impressive candidates such as Brian Shaw. Kidd played seven seasons with the Nets, averaging between 8.3 and 10.4 assists per game in that span. He'll likely be accompanied by top-notch assistants and if his career is any indicator, the Nets should be a more offensive-oriented team after ranking 17th in points per game last season.

Carmelo Anthony (sore knee) will not return to Sunday's game against Portland.

Dec 28 - 10:15 PM

Corey Brewer scored a season-high 25 points (8-of-11 FGs) off the Rockets bench in Sunday's road loss, while tying his career-high with six 3-pointers in a mere 24 minutes of action.

Brewer is now averaging 16.7 points on 58.1 percent shooting, 3.7 triples, 2.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.7 steals and 0.7 blocks in three games with Houston. He's averaging 23 minutes off the bench and his current numbers appear unsustainable (he had eight 3s all season with the Wolves), but he's worth a speculative pickup if you're in need of scoring, 3-pointers and steals.
Dec 28 - 10:10 PM

Josh Smith was in foul trouble throughout his first start with the Rockets on Sunday, scoring five points with eight rebounds, one assist and three steals in 26 minutes.

Smith made 2-of-7 FGs and 1-of-2 FTs with four turnovers and five personal fouls. The Spurs sagged way off him on the perimeter, daring him to beat them with long jumpers, and he finished with a +/- rating of -11. His inevitable ascension to the starting lineup bumped Donatas Motiejunas to the bench, where he had 11 points and five boards, while Kostas Papanikolaou picked up another DNP-CD. Smith was a fantasy liability in 8-cat and 9-cat leagues while in Detroit, and owners shouldn't expect any miracles in Houston.
Dec 28 - 10:04 PM

Manu Ginobili helped the Spurs avoid their third straight loss on Sunday, coming off the bench for 15 points, two 3-pointers, five rebounds, four assists and two steals in just 24 minutes.

He's been hot since sitting out on Dec. 20, averaging 14.3 points, 1.8 threes, 4.3 rebounds and 8.0 assists over the past four games, while shooting a combined 21-of-33 from the field. He's bound to play a bigger role for however long Tony Parker (hamstring) is sidelined, though fantasy owners should be wary of a potential DNPs during San Antonio's back-to-back set on Dec. 30 and 31.
Dec 28 - 10:03 PM

Zach Randolph (knee) does not have a timetable to return to action.

"I don't have a target date yet. I'm just trying to get it right and get the swelling out," Randolph said. "I want to get comfortable playing on it. We'll see how it is in a couple of days. I'll probably get it checked out again." It sounds like we can definitely rule him out for Tuesday's game, but it looks like Z-Bo will be looking at some additional time on the sidelines. Owners will have no choice but to be patient for now, and we expect Jon Leuer and Kosta Koufos to continue to fill the void for Memphis.
Dec 28 - 9:41 PM

Carmelo Anthony (knee) will start on Sunday vs. Portland.

There was some fear that he would be rested considering he said that his knee was sore after logging 46 minutes in Saturday's loss to the Kings, but the Knicks are going to roll him on out there. Fantasy owners will be wise to get Melo in all active lineups, but should really think about trading him due to the looming possibility of the Knicks shutting him down for the season.

Dec 28 - 7:48 PM

Amare Stoudemire (knee, rest) will not play in Sunday's road game vs. the Blazers.

The only good news for New York is that Carmelo Anthony (knee) will suit up despite playing 46 minutes on Saturday. Cole Aldrich and Jason Smith will start in the Knicks' backcourt with help from backups Quincy Acy and Travis Wear, but coach Derek Fisher has no choice but to play more small lineups than usual. Stoudemire is day-to-day, leaving him questionable for Wednesday's road game in L.A.

Dec 28 - 7:44 PM

Kevin Love said on Sunday that Kyrie Irving (knee) could miss another game or two.

This is a tough blow for Irving, as he has had a terrific season so far. We will consider him questionable for Tuesday's game vs. the Hawks, but it looks like the Cavaliers will opt to rest their star point guard for now. If Irving sits, expect Matthew Dellavedova to continue to start with Dion Waiters seeing extra playing time off of the bench.
Dec 28 - 7:43 PM

LeBron James took a hit to his left quad during Sunday's game, but returned to finish with 17 points, two 3-pointers, 10 rebounds, seven assists, one steal and seven turnovers.

The turnovers are rough and LBJ also shot 5-of-19 from the field in Cleveland's disjointed loss to the lowly Pistons, but at least his quad injury doesn't sound serious. We're leaving him off the injury report and owners should expect him to play in Tuesday's game in Atlanta -- we'll let you know if his status changes.
Dec 28 - 7:37 PM

J.J. Barea will start for Dallas against the Thunder on Sunday.

Tyson Chandler is sidelined for this game due to back spasms, so coach Rick Carlisle opted to go small by inserting Barea into the lineup. However, Barea's value will be limited to deeper leagues for owners in need of short-term value, and owners in standard leagues can look elsewhere. He is averaging just 7.3 points and 3.4 assists in 16 minutes per game this season, so there is nothing to get excited about here.
Dec 28 - 7:33 PM

Andre Drummond lit up the Cavs on Sunday for 16 points (8-of-12 FGs, 0-of-2 FTs), 17 rebounds, one steal and five blocks in 34 minutes of action.

Cleveland's interior defense is as soft as pudding without Anderson Varejao (Achilles), but Drummond has been on a roll regardless of his opponent over the past few weeks. Foul trouble is the only thing that's been slowing him down, though as usual owners must accept his atrocious free throw numbers -- he's shooting 30.8 percent on 5.2 attempts over the Pistons' past five games.
