The Bulls waived Carlos Boozer via their amnesty provision on Tuesday, clearing his $16.8 million salary from their salary cap.

This move has been long expected but the Bulls exhausted all possible trade scenarios before finally resorting to the amnesty provision. Boozer will earn the full $16.8 million and teams with salary-cap space can now bid for his services. If he lands in the right situation he may still return reliable fantasy value after a down season in Chicago last year.

Cavs coach David Blatt said Wednesday nigh that he's not sure if Anderson Varejao or Tristan Thompson will start at center for the Cavs this season.

This appears to be shaping up as a true training camp battle, and bringing Varejao off the bench could help to keep him healthy this season. That's always a tough thing to accomplish, but keep an eye on this battle throughout training camp and the preseason. Obviously, if Thompson wins the starting center job, his value would see a spike, while Varejao's would take a hit.

Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Wesley Johnson, Carlos Boozer and Jordan Hill were scrimmaging together in the first unit at practice on Wednesday.

This has been the expected lineup for a few weeks and Johnson's ability on defense will likely help him get run. However, he's not going to get the ball much and will likely just be taking 3-pointers. He's not quite worth drafting in most leagues.
Oct 1 - 4:34 PM

Ryan Kelly suffered a moderate left hamstring strain on Wednesday and is out indefinitely.

This is going to hurt his chances for playing time with coach Byron Scott. The Lakers drafted Julius Randle in the lottery and he'll likely soak up most of the bench minutes at power forward. Kelly will likely have an MRI and the Lakers should have a more precise prognosis soon.

Alec Burks said on Wednesday that he likes coach Quin Snyder's new offense.

"I feel like Quin plays my style," Burks said. "He wants to play with pace, open space. I do that for a living. I love to do that." He still hasn't been named as the official starter at shooting guard, but just about all signs suggest he'll be in that slot. Based on how he posted a 51.2 effective field goal percentage and a 23.1 usage rate after the break last season, Burks could have a breakout season.

C.J. Miles (strained calf) said that he's been playing alongside Rodney Stuckey in the Pacers' first unit during recent practices.

It's too early to declare Miles and Stuckey the team's starting swingmen, but the veterans appear to be the early favorites ahead of guys like Solomon Hill, C.J. Watson, Damjan Rudez and Chris Copeland. Hill has been filling in as a starter for portions of practice which Miles can't play in, due to his injury, and there's reason to believe this position battle is just getting started.
Oct 1 - 2:06 PM

The Grizzlies are encouraging Marc Gasol to look for his own shot more often this season.

Gasol is a phenomenal passer for a center, but Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger wants him to be much more aggressive. "He’s got to score the ball. That’s all there is to it," Joerger said. "It doesn’t make you a selfish player. It just means people can’t guard you." Gasol missed 23 games last year after spraining his MCL, but the injury is behind him and he's been very durable throughout his career. He has top-20 upside but his current ADP of 44.0 suggests he's reliably undervalued in fantasy drafts.
Oct 1 - 1:35 PM

76ers coach Brett Brown admitted that he's concerned about Nerlens Noel's ability to physically withstand the rigors of an 82-game season.

"We are all going to have to hold our breath a little bit as he starts to put on weight and starts to handle that side of the NBA physically," said Brown. "It is a worry for me because he plays so active in the air. But you turn him loose, and you wind him up. He is easy to motivate to play defense, and to see him interact with his teammates [during Tuesday's practice] was great." Noel's FT percentage will likely be a killer, but he should be a fun player to own as a starting big man on the up-tempo Sixers.

Joakim Noah (left knee) scrimmaged without any setbacks on Wednesday, and said afterward that he felt better than he did on Tuesday.

Noah wore a large brace to protect his knee but it didn't seem to bother him. He had arthroscopic surgery in May and is anticipating a "grueling season," but the fact that he's playing without restrictions bodes well for his season outlook.
Oct 1 - 1:19 PM

Heat PF Josh McRoberts (toe surgery) returned to practice on Tuesday, but he'll sit out Wednesday's scrimmage as a precaution.

McRoberts anticipates being fully healthy for opening night. He's is the uncontested starting PF for Miami this season, with Udonis Haslem as his most prominent backup, so minutes should be plentiful. He may not control the ball as often as he did last year but fantasy owners can still rely on him for a unique combination of 3-pointers, assists and some defensive stats, all with admirably few turnovers.

Jarrett Jack has been playing with the second unit during the Nets' first three days of training camp.

Jack may spend some time alongside Deron Williams during the course of games, but it doesn't appear coach Lionel Hollins is considering him as a starting SG. That likely means that Joe Johnson will play SG with either Andrei Kirilenko, Bojan Bogdanovic or Alan Anderson at SF, but this picture could change overnight as Hollins evaluates his team during the preseason.

Kevin Martin admitted that he "cut corners" during training camp and regular-season practices last season.

"I'm not going to be able to get away with the things I did the past five or six years because I have to be ... that big-brother type that has to do things the right way and not just get by on talent," Martin said. His honesty is commendable but the fact that he's been taking shortcuts for "five or six years" can't be welcome news for the franchise's paying him millions of dollars per season. Regardless, the veteran is poised to start at SG for coach Flip Saunders and he's vowed to lead by example. Fantasy owners should wait until the late rounds to target K-Mart.
