Cowboys LCB Terence Newman is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a groin injury sustained in Wednesday's practice.

Newman hopes to return for the opener, but that's optimistic considering his injury history. Newman also missed the start of the 2008 season with a groin injury. The Cowboys have to be kicking themselves for counting on the 32-year-old Newman to stay healthy while collecting $8 million this season.

Falcons LT Jake Matthews has been diagnosed with a sprained left knee, but the team is "hopeful" he can practice on Thursday.

Matthews didn't return after going down in the first half on Sunday. Thursday will be a test to see how far along he is, with how he feels on Friday likely determining his Week 14 status. Injuries are really starting to take a toll on the Falcons, who will be in both divisional and wild card dogfights down the stretch. Tom Compton is the next man up.

Julio Jones is dealing with a case of turf toe, but is expected to be fine.

Speaking Monday, coach Dan Quinn stressed the issue wasn't believed to be serious, but allowed it will be "monitored." Turf toe can be extremely tricky. Jones barely played down the stretch of Sunday's loss to the Chiefs, and was in clear discomfort on the sideline. It's definitely not a settled issue. Jones' practice reps figure to be extremely limited this week, though as of now, we can take Quinn at his word that Jones will probably suit up for Week 14.

The Cardinals will try to limit John Brown to weekly snaps as they work to figure out his sickle-cell issues.

Brown played 21-of-76 snaps against the Redskins, failing to corral his lone target. The Cardinals have had a difficult time getting to the bottom of Brown's problems with his sickle-cell trait. They weren't known to be an issue his first two years in the league. Brown won't be fantasy viable down the stretch.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Chiefs are "optimistic" Jeremy Maclin (groin) will return from his four-game absence on Thursday Night Football.

Speaking Monday, coach Andy Reid claimed ignorance on Maclin's status, but this is a pretty strong indication he will finally return. Travis Kelce has emerged as the Chiefs' No. 1 receiver in Maclin's absence, and been a much more dangerous weapon than Maclin was before going down. Maclin's return could still curb Kelce's upside, but we wouldn't consider Maclin more than a WR4 against the Raiders.

LSU RB Leonard Fournette will forego his senior season and enter the NFL Draft.

Fournette is considered an elite running back prospect, one who could go in the first five picks. He had injury issues in 2016, and racked up a ton of mileage in the rugged SEC, but is a truly rare size/speed/power prospect.
Dec 5 - 2:19 PM

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports there's a "real chance" Robert Griffin III (shoulder, injured reserve) is the Browns' Week 14 starter.

Griffin has yet to even be formally activated off injured reserve, but most signs are pointing toward him starting against the Bengals. The lost-year Browns might as well take a four-game look — if Griffin can stay healthy that long — headed into the offseason. We'd consider the odds heavily stacked against Griffin being the team's 2017 quarterback.

Dolphins MLB Kiko Alonso has undergone surgery for a broken thumb, but could continue playing.

Coach Adam Gase wasn't clear if he meant Alonso could return this week, or this season. Alonso played through the injury on Sunday, but it's obviously a different matter now that he's required/undergone surgery. Alonso has enjoyed a decent bounce-back season in the middle for Miami. Mike Hull will fill in if Alonso can't return.

Bucs WR Cecil Shorts tore his right ACL, MCL and PCL, and dislocated his knee.

It's a career-threatening injury. Going on 29 with a long and winding injury history, the odds are against Shorts ever playing another NFL snap. It's a shame for a player who had a useful peak, one that could have been much better without all the injuries.
Dec 5 - 1:40 PM

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said maybe the team "got ahead of ourselves" in Kelvin Benjamin's recovery from an ACL tear this offseason.

"Maybe we did get him out there too soon, too much," Rivera said. Benjamin has not been spectacular, but he has actually caught a larger percentage of his targets and averaged more yards per catch this year than his rookie season. He also is dealing with a shoulder injury which likely has nothing to do with being pushed back "too soon." The Panthers will look for answers after this lost season, but Benjamin has been fine.
Dec 5 - 12:58 PM

Eagles coach Doug Pederson said Jordan Matthews (ankle) should return to practice Wednesday.

Matthews was able to get in a limited practice last Thursday, but he was held out on Friday after getting "a little sore." A return Wednesday would tentatively put Matthews on track to play, but another setback cannot be ruled out. Devoid of reliable weapons in the passing game, the Eagles need Matthews healthy as soon as possible.
Dec 5 - 12:17 PM

Eagles coach Doug Pederson said Ryan Mathews (knee) is expected to practice Wednesday.

Mathews has missed the last two games with an MCL sprain. A practice Wednesday would put him on track to play against the Redskins, but Pederson said just last week the injury "could linger." Mathews should be considered questionable.
