Lombardi: Welker will stay with Pats in 2012

NFL Network's Michael Lombardi confirms the Patriots will place the franchise tag on Wes Welker if a long-term deal can't be reached.

"They've been trying all season to get a deal done," said Lombardi, "but it hasn't come to fruition yet. ... They're not going to lose Wes Welker. He's going to be a part of their team." The Pats would prefer to sign their leading receiver to a 2-3 year deal. The wide receiver franchise tag will drop from $11.5 million to roughly $9.4 million this year.

Wells' surgery more complicated than meniscus

Beanie Wells acknowledged Tuesday that his January 24 right knee surgery was "a little more complicated" than simply repairing his damaged meniscus.

When beat writer Kent Somers asked about a possible microfracture procedure, Beanie just smiled and walked away. Wells isn't practicing this week, though coach Ken Whisenhunt insists sitting out offseason drills has been the plan all along. While the Cardinals hope to have their starter back for training camp, we've seen no assurance that Beanie will be back to 100 percent by late July.

Bucs WR Benn running with 3rd-team offense

Bucs WR Arrelious Benn is running with the third-team offense at OTAs.

Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams are the starters, as expected. Preston Parker and Sammie Stroughter are running with the second team. Benn isn't going to have a major role in the Bucs offense this season. Dynasty owners faced with a roster crunch should think about cutting ties with the 2010 second-rounder.

Shurmur: Little & Massaquoi 'early starters'

Coach Pat Shurmur says Greg Little and Mohamed Massaquoi are the Browns' "early starters" at receiver.

Little can be safely penciled in as the No. 1 wideout, but Massaquoi will have to fight off fourth-round pick Travis Benjamin. It's an advantage for Massaquoi to begin OTAs atop the depth chart, but he'll be far from guaranteed of starting in Week 1. He hasn't been the same player since his October 2010 concussion, and turned in a thoroughly unimpressive 2011. The Browns have proven almost comically hesitant to cut the cord on disappointing players, however, so Massaquoi's chances of winning the job can't be discounted.

Dolphins playing Odrick at left defensive end

The Dolphins are using Jared Odrick at left defensive end in their new 4-3.

Odrick played right end in the old 3-4. Now a 4-3 team, the Dolphins are trying to get their best four defensive linemen on the field. Odrick figures to play end on all running downs, kicking inside to tackle in passing situations with rookie Olivier Vernon replacing him on the edge. Cameron Wake will be a full-time, every-down right end. The D-Tackles are Paul Soliai and Randy Starks.

Leshoure likely to eventually draw 2-game ban

The Detroit News expects Mikel Leshoure to eventually draw a two-game suspension for his twin offseason marijuana arrests.

Leshoure has enrolled in the NFL's substance abuse program, and is being tested "several times" a week. Still rehabbing his torn Achilles', Leshoure insisted he is "feeling great" at Lions OTAs. "I don't know what percentage it's at or anything because I haven't really pushed it to the limit yet," he said. "There's plenty of time for that. ... But I will be ready to roll by the season."

Seahawks acquire Winslow for late-round pick

Seahawks acquired TE Kellen Winslow from the Buccaneers in exchange for a conditional 2013 seventh-round pick.

The pick can upgrade to a sixth-rounder based on Winslow's performance. Tampa Bay did well to get anything for Winslow, who has creaky knees and played last season with a hitch in his gait. He would have been released if Seattle hadn't made a trade offer. Winslow, who turns 29 before the coming season, finished 2011 with 75 catches for 763 yards and two touchdowns. His playmaking ability has been dwindling several years running, and he's now going to a run-first offense to compete for snaps behind Zach Miller. Winslow may help Seattle in a limited role, but his fantasy value will be scant in 2012.

Bucs sign 33-year-old tight end Dallas Clark

Bucs signed TE Dallas Clark, formerly of the Colts.

Clark has a big name, but he's a late-career player who was a shell of his former self last season. Consistently exposed as a blocker and dropping eight passes among just over 60 targets, Clark was one of the weakest tight ends in football. Not all can be blamed on Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky, as Clark was a contributor in the Colts' woes. In Tampa, he doesn't figure to crack the fantasy radar. Clark will be a bit player, seeing the field only on passing downs in Greg Schiano's run-first attack.

Bengals: We have no reservations about Dalton

Bengals OC Jay Gruden downplayed a story from NFL Films' Greg Cosell that claimed the organization has some reservations about Andy Dalton's long-term ceiling.

Citing a member of the organization, Cosell told Yahoo that the Bengals are "not comfortable" with forcing things on Dalton, and "have a few doubts" about him due to arm strength limitations. "I don't know where that came from and why (Cosell) said it," Gruden declared. "If there were reservations about Andy Dalton, there would be a lot more quarterbacks here right now. We know and he knows he has to get better. ... I have no reservations about arm strength. I think he can do it all."

Cowboys CB Jenkins now wants out of Dallas

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that CB Mike Jenkins will not attend the opening of Cowboys OTAs Tuesday and wants to be traded.

The Cowboys tried dealing Jenkins on draft day, but found no takers and had hoped to keep him for depth. He wants a new contract and to be a starter, however, and Jenkins isn't going to be a first-teamer in Dallas anymore. The Cowboys may end up having to settle for a late-round pick to ship Jenkins out of town. He's recovering from major offseason shoulder surgery, and teams won't be falling over themselves to meet his contract demands.

Bucs expected to release Winslow, sign Clark

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Bucs are expected to release Kellen Winslow and sign free agent Dallas Clark "probably sooner than later."

Per beat writer Stephen Holder, "odds are good" the Bucs will find no takers for Winslow's contract, and he'll be cut rather than traded. The Bears are tentatively expected to have interest in Winslow, who could play a Tony Scheffler-like role in Mike Tice and Jeremy Bates' offense. Clark would likely be a 12-20 snap-per-game player in Tampa, seeing the field strictly on passing downs.

Andre Johnson had knee scoped in early May

Andre Johnson revealed Monday that he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in early May.

Johnson insists he experienced no pain before the surgery, and is in no pain now. He's sitting out OTAs, but fully expects to be ready for training camp. While this doesn't sound like a major concern, surgeries are beginning to pile up for Johnson entering his age-31 campaign. He had ankle surgery last offseason, and hamstring surgery during the year. Johnson remains locked in as a top-five fantasy receiver for 2012, but his recovery is worth tracking ahead of drafts.
