Saints re-signed CB Elbert Mack.

Mack was dumped in favor of Jerome Murphy early this month. Now that Murphy has been waived, Mack gets another shot at the final cornerback spot.

Ryan Mallett missed Thursday's practice because he overslept.

It's hard to fathom for a 27-year-old man who was in pursuit of the Texans' starting job as recently as three days ago. The Texans gave Mallett a chance to make something of his career after three years in the Patriots backup wilderness, and he's responded in remarkably limp fashion. The Browns have a strong case, as well, but you could argue Houston has the worst quarterback situation in the NFL.

The Buffalo News' Vic Carucci believes there's been "nothing at camp that indicates" E.J. Manuel is a serious contender for the Bills' starting job.

This has been the consensus all summer long, making it all the more baffling that coach Rex Ryan has decided Manuel will start this weekend's regular season dress rehearsal over Tyrod Taylor and Matt Cassel. The most sensible theory is that Ryan is trying to throw the Colts off before Week 1, but Ryan has to know presumptive starter Taylor needs all the preseason reps with the 1s he can get. Perhaps the Bills believe Manuel could generate trade interest with a decent showing. Whatever the reasoning, it's hard to understand.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Martavis Bryant's four-game suspension is for "multiple failed marijuana tests."

Per Rapsheet, Bryant's appeal is in "the latter stages." Bryant now has all the makings of a boom-or-bust WR3, especially since Markus Wheaton has supposedly looked ready to break out as the Steelers' No. 2 receiver. Bryant's touchdown upside makes him worth a later-round draft pick and stash in re-draft leagues, but it can't be assumed he'll simply pick up where he left off in his impressive rookie campaign.

The Packers are expected to rest their starters in Saturday's preseason game against the Eagles.

It means we probably won't get a look at new starting receiver Davante Adams. The Pack are packing it in after last Sunday's game from hell, where Jordy Nelson (ACL) was lost for the season. Several linemen are at less than 100 percent, which would have exposed Aaron Rodgers to unnecessary risk. If Adams indeed isn't playing, he finishes his preseason with three catches for 17 yards. That presupposes he sits out the finale, of course.

Ravens signed SS Will Hill to a one-year extension through 2016.

It's a sign the Ravens genuinely believe Hill has turned his life around. Hill went undrafted over character concerns in 2012, and proceeded to draw a suspension in each of his first three NFL campaigns. Hill has been popped for both substance abuse and PEDs. He is still only 25, however, and has proven to be one of the league's more effective safeties when on the field. Now the Ravens will keep their fingers crossed he stays there.

Speaking Thursday, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said there's "no timetable" for Breshad Perriman's (sprained PCL) return, and that his recovery gone slower than expected.

Perriman should miss the entire preseason, and is looking mighty questionable for Week 1. It's a disaster for a team with no receiver depth to speak of. It should ensure Marlon Brown's roster spot. If you're drafting this weekend, Perriman should be treated as a boom-or-bust WR4.

The Bills remain "cautiously optimistic" LeSean McCoy (hamstring) will be ready for Week 1.

Coach Rex Ryan isn't prone to tall tales with injury updates, so it's a bit concerning he hasn't moved on to outright guaranteeing Shady will be ready for the opener against Indy in 17 days. McCoy's status should be updated multiple times over the next two weeks.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera hinted the team is planning on rookie WR Devin Funchess replacing Kelvin Benjamin (ACL).

"The thing we’re waiting for is for Devin to be healthy and get him out on the football field," Rivera said. "He runs a lot of the same type of routes. He’s almost as imposing a target as Kelvin and the biggest thing with him is the confidence that he plays with as he develops." OC Mike Shula said the plan is to replace Benjamin with a committee, but it sounds like Funchess will get most of the snaps in Benjamin's old "X" position. The jury is still out on if Funchess can be an effective wide receiver in the NFL, but volume alone could make him a value at his WR38 draft price.

Coach Ron Rivera said he does not expect to use the read option "any more than we've done in the past."

With Kelvin Benjamin done for the year, there was some thought Carolina would get Cam Newton more involved in the running game. Newton had more than 125 rushing attempts in each of his first two seasons, but he has seen his rushing totals fall each of the last two years. The Panthers might not want to use Newton more in the running game, but if Devin Funchess and company cannot pick up the slack, they may have no choice.

The Philadelphia Inquirer said the "expectation" is rookie Nelson Agholor will be the "second-most productive receiver on the team."

The most productive will be Jordan Matthews, around whom observers of the team believe the passing offense will be built. Though he is not officially starting yet, Agholor has a higher ceiling than Riley Cooper and Josh Huff. He should pass both on the depth chart soon enough, and he is a good bet to finish the year with the second-most targets on the team.

Rams first-round pick Todd Gurley is not participating in blitz-pickup drills at training camp.

Gurley is participating in some team work, but pass-protection drills involve a lot of contact and Gurley is still only nine months removed from ACL surgery. Not even being able to practice blitz pickups is a concern for Gurley's usage, on top of the limitations the Rams have already installed for him. Gurley will be a rotational player only until he shows he can protect Nick Foles.
