Broncos placed LB Joe Mays (ankle) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Mays sustained a fracture while blocking on a punt return in Sunday night's win over the Saints. The $12 million middle linebacker had been relegated to special teams since losing his starting job to veteran Keith Brooking. Mays' third season in Denver ends with 20 tackles and a half-sack.

The Nashville Tennessean reports the Titans will start sixth-round rookie Zach Mettenberger at quarterback in Week 8 against the Texans.

Having already lost hope for the 2014 season, the Titans will start playing their pups. Injury-prone, contract-year quarterback Jake Locker has been formally demoted. It's believed Mettenberger was informed of coach Ken Whisenhunt's decision to start him on Tuesday night, which perhaps explains why none of Tennessee's quarterbacks were allowed to speak with the media on Wednesday. A strong-armed LSU product albeit with zero mobility, Mettenberger will make his first NFL start against J.J. Watt's Texans in a home game. With Jadeveon Clowney (knee) tentatively due back this week, the Houston defense is worth a look as a Week 8 streamer.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports teams have been calling the Titans about Nate Washington's availability.

This unofficially translates to, "We, the Titans, would love to trade Nate Washington." Already demoted in favor of Justin Hunter, Washington is just taking up roster and cap space on Tennessee's 53, and could probably be had for a conditional seventh-round pick. Unfortunately for the Titans, Washington has a guaranteed $4.8 million base salary and isn't worth half that much. They'd be lucky to get a bag of punctured footballs for him.

Raiders OLB LaMarr Woodley is expected to miss the rest of the season with a torn biceps muscle.

He won't be missed. Woodley was a complete non-factor in six games for the Raiders, managing five tackles and zero sacks. Dating back to the 2009 season, Woodley's sack totals in chronological order are 13.5, 10, 9, 4, 5, and 0. GM Reggie McKenzie signed Woodley to a two-year, $12 million deal this past March. Only the Titans and Raiders -- two of the worst-run organizations in pro sports -- had interest after the Steelers cut him this past spring. Woodley figures to be released by Oakland in the offseason.

Pierre Thomas (ribs, shoulder) did not practice Wednesday.

Thomas is expected to miss 2-3 weeks. Travaris Cadet will see an increased role in the passing game. Khiry Robinson (forearm) also missed practice Wednesday, though his injury isn't believed to be serious. Cadet is worth looking at in deeper PPR leagues after producing a 15-129-1 receiving line the past two weeks.

Anthony Dixon said he expects to "kinda do it together, as a combination" with Bryce Brown in the Bills' backfield.

Again, this isn't unexpected. The Bills are going to go into Week 8 against the Jets with an open mind. Dixon will likely get the start in the Fred Jackson role, with Brown coming in as the change-of-pace speed complement, a la C.J. Spiller. From there, the Bills may gradually work to a hot-hand approach. If it comes to that, we'd expect Brown to be the superior option based solely on talent. It may take a week or two for it to get sorted out, but Brown offers the highest upside.

Coach Rex Ryan said it's "unrealistic" to expect Percy Harvin to play 50 offensive snaps in his Jets' debut Week 8 against the Bills.

Harvin will return kickoffs and possibly punts, but he doesn't know OC Marty Mornhinweg's offense. The Jets will have a couple packages for Harvin on offense, but he's unlikely to play more than 25-30 snaps. It may take a few weeks before Harvin becomes usable in fantasy lineups. It'll be Eric Decker and Jeremy Kerley gobbling up the bulk of the work and targets at receiver Sunday.

Coach Jeff Fisher said "it'll be a week-to-week thing" at running back for the Rams.

"Zac [Stacy] could get 25 carries this week," Fisher continued. "We had some things in early this week. It was working so we decided to stay with [Tre Mason]. It’s nothing that Zac has done or hasn’t done." Fisher clearly hates fantasy football. He's also never been a coach who favors a committee approach in the backfield. Most weeks, it's going to either be Mason or Stacy. And beat writer Nick Wagoner expects Mason to get the first look Week 8 against the Chiefs.

Coach Chuck Pagano said Reggie Wayne (elbow) is day-to-day.

"Nothing of significance there," Pagano added. Wayne sat out practice on Wednesday, as he normally does, so we'll have to wait until Thursday for any real substantial update. It's possible Wayne doesn't even practice much, if at all, this week. At 35 years old, Wayne doesn't need to practice to play on Sundays.

Dianna Marie Russini of NBC Washington reports there's "NO chance" Robert Griffin III (ankle) plays Monday night's Week 8 game against the Cowboys.

RGIII took the first rep at Wednesday's practice, but the Redskins don't start their official practice week until Thursday this week because of Monday night's game. Coach Jay Gruden made Colt McCoy instead of RGIII available to the media, and said he wants to have a starter in place by Thursday afternoon, suggesting it will be McCoy. RGIII will shoot for a Week 9 return at Minnesota.

A.J. Green (toe) remained sidelined at Wednesday's practice.

Green is improving, however. He did some light jogging and high-stepping on a side field Wednesday. We'd like to see him get in at least a limited session Thursday or Friday if he's going to play Week 8 against the Ravens. The Bengals' offense went down the tubes last week in Indianapolis minus Green.
Oct 22 - 1:19 PM

Updating a previous item, Calvin Johnson (ankle) was limited at Wednesday's practice.

Megatron did nothing in the portion of practice open to the media, but apparently did individual drills of some sort when the beat writers left. "I'm getting better; I'll tell you that much," Johnson said. "Moving around a lot more, so I'm feeling good." We still consider Johnson unlikely to play Week 8 vs. Atlanta.
