Vikings coach Leslie Frazier reiterated at Monday's presser that he isn't considering benching Christian Ponder.

"I really haven’t thought about pulling him for a game and taking him out for a series or anything like that," Frazier said. "There are times where he needs to stay in the pocket a little bit longer. He needs to be patient." Ponder has been playing spectacularly bad football of late, failing to top 63 yards passing in two of his past three games, while struggling to present any sort of a threat downfield. Backup Joe Webb has been unimpressive in parts of 17 career games, however. The Vikings' supposed quarterback of the future, Ponder's leash should remain long, but he'd do well to at least breach the century mark against Detroit.

Saints re-signed WR Robert Meachem to a one-year contract.

After one miserable season in San Diego, Meachem returned to New Orleans in 2013 to catch 16 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns as a situational deep threat. Entering his age-30 season, Meachem will try and fill that role again in 2014 but should face competition from Joe Morgan and a rookie.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the 49ers are not planning to release embattled OLB Aldon Smith.

However, RapSheet believes Smith will begin the year suspended, and potentially even in jail. Smith was already due to appear in court on April 29 on gun and DUI charges before his bizarre Sunday arrest for making a bomb threat at LAX. It's pretty safe to assume Smith won't be appearing in all 16 games this season.

TMZ reports Donovan McNabb was arrested for DUI in January, and agreed to serve one day in jail as part of a plea agreement.

That explains the mugshot, but doesn't explain how the news was kept under wraps for three months. It's also unclear if the matter is resolved or ongoing. Out of the league since 2011, McNabb officially retired in September. It's his first-known brush with the law.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on NFL Live Thursday that the "prevailing thought around the league" is the Texans will "take a defensive player or look to trade out" at the No. 1 overall pick.

Per Schefter, Houston is unlikely to draft a quarterback first. There have been increased signs the Texans have already settled on South Carolina DE/OLB Jadeveon Clowney, not the least of which was Clowney's decision to end his private-workout schedule on the pre-draft circuit. We suspect the Texans may have already informed Clowney he'll be their pick. Look for Houston to draft Clowney at No. 1 and select a quarterback 33rd overall. Signal callers are going to fall on draft day, quite possibly further than anyone expects.

Jaguars released/failed physical LB Russell Allen.

A 2009 undrafted free agent, Allen has spent his entire career with the Jags, starting 29 games over the past two seasons. Jax's weak-side linebacker in 2013, Allen tallied 64 tackles and a sack before a concussion sent him to injured reserve in Week 16. The "failed physical" designation suggests he's still recovering. Allen graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 17 4-3 outside linebacker, but is a replacement-level run stuffer. Going on 28, he's best suited to a reserve role. Although by no means a difference maker, Allen's release creates another need on the second level of Jacksonville's defense.

According to the New York Daily News, the Jets anticipate using Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory in a "1-2 punch."

Beat writer Manish Mehta believes Johnson "won't come close" to his career average of 290 carries per year, and could lose "35-40" percent off his 2013 total of 279. That would put Johnson at 167-181 rushing attempts. Should Johnson improve on his 2013 YPC average of 3.86 to, say, 4.20, that would give him 702-763 rushing yards. Ivory is the superior between-the-tackles runner, but Johnson's contract -- the biggest on the 2014 running back market and worth twice as much on a per-year basis as Ivory's three-year, $6 million deal -- suggests CJ?K will indeed be Gang Green's lead back. Ivory projects as a two-down change-of-pace bruiser off the bench.

The Sacramento Bee reports the 49ers "have been shopping" third-year RB LaMichael James.

It's been speculated James would be available since early in the offseason. The 61st overall pick in the 2012 draft, James has earned just 44 offensive touches in two seasons with San Francisco. His kickoff-return production dropped sharply as a sophomore, and he fumbled two punts. An undersized, straight-linish runner with no power and little elusiveness, we don't have particularly high hopes for James even if he finds a new home. He'll be 25 in October.

Seahawks re-signed WR Sidney Rice to a one-year contract.

Rice announced his return on his Twitter account. He flirted with the Jets on Wednesday, but that might have been a play to get the Seahawks to step up their efforts. Rice has mostly been a disappointment with the Seahawks the past three seasons and was released by the team in February, but he possesses a strong pair of reliable hands and can play on the outside. After losing Golden Tate to the Lions, the Seahawks were in the market for a a receiver.

Profootballtalk reports the Raiders will try to trade Terrelle Pryor by Monday.

Both CSN Bay Area and FOX Sports reported Pryor was on the block last month. The Raiders' offseason program begins on Monday, and they don't want the distraction of Pryor. If GM Reggie McKenzie can't find a trade partner, he's fully expected to waive Pryor. He has one year left on his deal at a meager $705,000.

Giants agreed to terms with QB Josh Freeman on a one-year contract.

Matt Flynn chose to sign with the Packers, so the Giants go with Freeman as an offseason and camp arm. As long as Eli Manning's ankle heals as expected, it's possible Freeman won't even stick with the team into the regular season as Curtis Painter and Ryan Nassib are already on the roster. The Giants typically carry just two quarterbacks. Freeman has the arm talent to win that No. 2 job, but he's going to have to earn his spot after getting dumped by the Bucs and then lasting one game as the Vikings starter last season.

Peyton Manning said Montee Ball is ready to be the starting running back.

The Broncos wouldn't have let Knowshon Moreno walk for pennies if Ball didn't have Manning's blessing. We saw that faith in the playoffs last season, when Ball played on 91-of-226 (40.2 percent) of the snaps across three games. Stubborn fantasy owners are going to remember Ball's blown blitz pickup from the preseason and back-to-back fumbles in Weeks 2 and 3, but the Broncos have forgotten about that long ago. Both the coaching staff and Peyton are ready to ride with the physical second-year man as their feature back.
