Redskins promoted CB D.J. Johnson from their practice squad.

David Jones was waived in a corresponding move. The Redskins will give Johnson a chance to see if he can be an improvement in coverage and on special teams.

Manti Te'o is expected to be the Saints' starting middle linebacker.

Beat writer Nick Underhill anticipates Te'o starting in the Saints' base defense, then leaving the field on passing downs. Saints linebackers always offer theoretical IDP upside due to increased tackle opportunities, but Te'o's two-down role severely curbs his ceiling. He is also likely to be a liability enemy offenses attack with tight ends and running backs on early-down passes.

Jordan Matthews (chest) caught passes during individual drills at Sunday's practice.

He had a helmet on but wasn't wearing pads. Matthews suffered a chip fracture in his sternum at his first Bills practice last Sunday but is already on the mend. The Bills are going to take things slow with Matthews but it looks like the slot receiver will be ready for Week 1.

Jets coach Todd Bowles blamed Christian Hackenberg's poor showing in Saturday's preseason loss to the Lions on poor blocking by the offensive line.

Hackenberg was predictably awful, completing just 2-of-6 passes for 14 yards before bowing out at halftime. The Penn State alum has made shockingly little progress since arriving as a second-round pick last season, though Bowles said Saturday's clunker wasn't his fault. "They really didn’t give him a chance," he said. "I don’t think anybody can have a chance when we’re blocking like that." Adding to the dysfunction, likely Week 1 starter Josh McCown was instructed not to speak with reporters after Saturday's game. The Jets are a hot mess in all facets.

According to Matt Lombardo of NJ Advance Media, "it wouldn't be surprising" if LeGarrette Blount is among the Eagles' cuts.

Lombardo also wonders if Wendell Smallwood's job is in jeopardy, hypothesizing that Smallwood may need to beat out UDFA Corey Clement. Blount has started both preseason games but has rushed for just 17 yards on nine carries. It's an admittedly small sample, though Blount hasn't shown much in camp and seems to be showing signs of fatigue after logging a career-high 299 carries last season. He's also not a great fit in Doug Pederson's offense, where backs are expected to play in the passing game. Blount may still have some value as a goal-line vulture if the Eagles keep him, but his fantasy arrow is pointing in the wrong direction.

Mitchell Trubisky completed 6-of-8 passes for 60 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' second preseason game.

Trubisky did not enter the game until late in the third quarter, with Mark Sanchez getting in one series between starter Mike Glennon and the rookie. Coming off a rampaging performance in his NFL debut, Trubisky had a nondescript night on Saturday. Half of his yardage came on a screen pass and an easy dump-off on a bootleg, and Benny Cunningham was wide open on his short touchdown pass. He also forced a throw to the sideline which probably should have been intercepted. Even with Glennon struggling, playing Trubisky so late suggests the Bears are not serious about evaluating the No. 2 overall pick as a potential starter.

Fourth-rounder Tarik Cohen rushed 11 times for 77 yards in the Bears' second preseason game.

With Jordan Howard sidelined, Cohen got the start, coming out of the gate extremely hot. He gained 16 yards on his first carry, added another 16-yard run on the next series, and went for 25 the drive after that. His most impressive run may have been a nine-yard gain in which he pressed inside before turning on the jets and beating everyone to the corner. Cohen looks like a real talent, and he should provide a great change-of-pace option behind Howard.

Mike Glennon completed 13-of-18 passes for 89 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in the Bears' second preseason game.

Glennon missed a few early throws, but he appeared to get things going on the third drive of the game. That series ended with a bad interception near the goal line in which Glennon stared down Kendall Wright, however, and he probably should have been picked again on the next drive. He saved his day somewhat by leading a short touchdown march to close out the half, hitting Wright on the same route which was picked earlier in the game. It was not an inspiring performance, especially considering how well the running game worked while Glennon was in there, but it was not bad enough for him to lose his job.

Texans WR Bruce Ellington caught 4-of-5 targets for 93 yards in Saturday night's preseason game.

Ellington was signed off the street eight days ago. The former 49ers fourth-round pick got the surprise start against the Patriots and ripped off repeated big plays, most notably a 37-yard deep ball from Tom Savage and a 33-yard catch-and-run from Deshaun Watson. Ellington is a fringe NFL player at this point, but the Texans do have some complementary receiver opportunity with Will Fuller (collarbone) in danger of missing half of the season.

Jared Goff completed 16-of-20 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown in the Rams' second preseason game.

Yes, Jared Goff torched somebody. He probably should have had 17 completions, but a nice deep ball to Sammy Watkins got broken up by an excellent Sean Smith play. Some of it was checkdown yardage — all of it came against an embattled Raiders defense — but it was the best we've seen Goff look, preseason or otherwise. His touchdown came on an excellent play fake to Cooper Kupp. At the very least, you can tell Goff is now part of a legitimate offensive scheme. Jeff Fisher didn't bother with that. Goff was locked onto third-rounder Kupp. He'll get the Chargers in the Rams' regular season dress rehearsal next Saturday night.
Aug 19 - 11:24 PM

Paxton Lynch completed 9-of-13 passes for 39 yards and rushed three times for 27 yards in the Broncos' second preseason game.

Lynch has simply shown no ability to move the Broncos' offense, and you could argue he looks worse than his rookie-year preseason. He was a checkdown machine Saturday night against the 49ers, generating his best play on a 10-yard scramble. Trevor Siemian gives the Broncos a better chance to win, but the team is still trying to force the issue with Lynch. who hasn't shown any tangible signs of improvement. He's looking like a first-round draft bust.
Aug 19 - 11:23 PM

Dion Lewis rushed seven times for 34 yards and caught 1-of-2 targets for nine yards in the Patriots' second preseason game.

He was the third back in the game behind Rex Burkhead and James White. Burkhead worked as the featured back with New England's first-team offense, while Lewis played with the Jimmy Garoppolo group for the second-straight week. Lewis did show impressive burst and acceleration, and he is a more explosive option than Burkhead. Lewis has just as good a chance at this point as Mike Gillislee (hamstring) to be a Week 1 factor in the Patriots' backfield.
