Calvin Johnson suggested lingering nerve damage down both arms from a Week 4 stinger is behind his abnormal problems with drops over the past five games.

The stinger occurred on the same play that Johnson was concussed. He returned to the game and had trouble catching a pair of high passes that he would normally corral. "Actually I had some nerve damage that was kind of messing up my grip a little," said Johnson. "Not to blame that, but I think the concussion could have had something to do with some of that (nerve) damage." Johnson did confirm that his pre-injury form is "definitely coming back." He was on pace for a 200-yard game last week before the Lions took the air out of the ball with a commanding lead.

Robert Griffin III has been benched.

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the Days of Our Lives. Beset by never-ending drama and an inability to stay at 100 percent, RGIII has met his predictable end for the league's most dysfunctional franchise. It's possible he won't even be the first man off the bench, with vanilla coach Jay Gruden preferring Colt McCoy's pop-gun skill-set to RGIII's unrefined dual-threat aesthetic. Much of Griffin's issues are his own doing, but he's received zero help from a franchise that's offered bafflingly little support since making him a centerpiece three years ago. A trade or release is best for all parties involved, and the sooner, the better.

Colts coach Chuck Pagano said WR T.Y. Hilton is in the league's concussion protocol.

Hilton likely suffered the injury during the third preseason game, but he was not diagnosed until after the game. His status for Week 1 is unclear. The Colts open the season against the Bills in 13 days.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden named Kirk Cousins the team's starting quarterback.

Gruden said Cousins "is the best quarterback on our roster" and will be the starter for all of 2015. That may be the intention today, but nothing in the Redskins' recent history suggests they will slide through the entire season with one quarterback. Cousins owns a 59-percent career completion rate and has thrown 19 interceptions to 18 touchdowns in his three-year career. Robert Griffin III and even Colt McCoy could still make starts this season.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport expects the Bills to cut a quarterback after naming Tyrod Taylor their starter.

Coach Rex Ryan has said the team would probably keep three quarterbacks, but he has been anything but forthcoming about his quarterbacks during the last month. E.J. Manuel seems like the obvious choice if Buffalo decides to release someone, but Matt Cassel's $4.75 million cap charge could earn him the boot. The Bills would get all of that $4.75 million off the cap by releasing Cassel.

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reports the Bills have decided Tyrod Taylor will be their starting quarterback.

ESPN's Adam Schefter hinted at this possibility earlier Monday. Taylor only attempted 35 regular season passes as Joe Flacco's backup in Baltimore for four seasons, but he offers the Bills a rushing dimension veteran Matt Cassel cannot match. That rushing ability should land Tyrod Taylor on the streaming radar as long as he holds the job. He has 108 yards and a touchdown on the ground this preseason.

The Dallas Morning News reports the Cowboys have no interest in free agent RB Fred Jackson "at this time."

"At this time" is a very important part of the report. Reports have suggested the Cowboys are comfortable with their committee of Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar, but that could change if the trio struggles early in the season. Jackson went to high school in the Dallas area.

Tom Brady and the NFL failed to reach a settlement Monday in their dispute over Brady's four-game suspension.

The talks went nowhere and the hearing was over quickly. Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo reports a decision from U.S. District Judge Richard Berman is expected tomorrow or Wednesday. We are finally nearing the end of this ridiculous saga.

Steelers acquired K Josh Scobee from the Jaguars.

With Garrett Hartley suffering a potentially serious injury in the third preseason game, the Steelers needed to add another option. Scobee has been the Jaguars kicker since 2004. Jason Myers should take over the kicking duties in Jacksonville, while Scobee suddenly becomes fantasy-relevant in Pittsburgh.

Bills released RB Fred Jackson.

This one is a shocker. Jackson missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury, but showed he still had juice in his legs in the third preseason game, rushing five times for 48 yards and a touchdown. Releasing Jackson suggests the Bills are confident Karlos Williams (illness) and LeSean McCoy (hamstring) will be ready Week 1. An eight-year veteran, Jackson has been with Buffalo his entire career. He should get a long look from teams in need of veteran running back help. The Cowboys, Browns and Patriots could make some sense.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Redskins are not trying to trade Robert Griffin III.

La Canfora confirmed ESPN's report the team was informed Kirk Cousins would be the Week 1 starter, but he denied the team was actively trying to trade Griffin. Despite the lack of trade talk, La Canfora called Griffin's future with the organization "murky at best." Griffin's $16.155 million 2016 option is only guaranteed for injury, so it would be in the Redskins' best interests to keep him out of harm's way this season.
Aug 31 - 10:16 AM

ESPN's Dianna Marie Russini reports the Redskins have named Kirk Cousins as their Week 1 starter.

Over the weekend Russini reported Washington planned to start Cousins Week 1. She has taken it a step further this time by saying the team was informed of the decision to start Cousins this morning. Russini's original report was questioned by other national reporters like the NFL Network's Albert Breer, so it will be interesting to see if this one gets any pushback. It is becoming clear Robert Griffin III's time in Washington is nearing its end.
