Marcel Reece started the Raiders' Week 10 game over Taiwan Jones, and finished with 13 rushes for 48 yards to go with 56 yards on seven receptions.

Jones, a popular Sleeper of the Week in fantasy circles, was Oakland's third-string tailback behind Reece (20 touches) and Saturday practice squad callup Jeremy Stewart (7 touches). Jones got three touches. Although a largely ineffective carrier of the football, Reece played a major role in the Weeks 9-10 passing games and figures to be the primary back once again in Week 11, assuming Mike Goodson and Darren McFadden don't return against the Saints. Consider Reece an every-week PPR flex until Goodson and/or McFadden come back.

NFL suspended 49ers OLB Aldon Smith nine games for violating the league's personal conduct and substance abuse policies.

The 49ers have a Week 8 bye, so Smith won't be available until Week 11. As San Francisco has already lost ILB Navorro Bowman (ACL, MCL) and NT Glenn Dorsey (torn biceps), it's fair to wonder if the team will be forced to play more aggressive offense in Colin Kaepernick's second year as a starter. Smith's ban turned out to be even longer than expected, but it's a fair punishment regardless following Smith's array of off-field transgressions. The 49ers will turn to special teams type Dan Skuta and sophomore Corey Lemonier opposite Ahmad Brooks. It's an enormous downgrade in pass-rush ability.

Bengals released RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

After Jeremy Hill's beastly preseason, the Bengals were able to comfortably sever ties with 29-year-old Green-Ellis, who was injured for much of August following an ineffective 2013 season. An aging plodder, Green-Ellis will probably resurface on a team in desperate need of a short-yardage back, but he has very little left to offer. The Bengals' tailback depth chart stands at Giovani Bernard, rookie Hill, Cedric Peerman, and Rex Burkhead as Week 1 approaches.

Profootballtalk.com reports the Bears are "very pleased" with Santonio Holmes and expect him to "have a real role" in Marc Trestman's offense.

Holmes appears ticketed for a committee at third receiver, sharing time with superior blocker Josh Morgan. Holmes finished August with a bang, reeling in a 32-yard touchdown in Thursday night's preseason finale. He's someone to monitor in deep leagues, but is merely a WR5/6 for fantasy purposes.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Sammy Watkins "should be good to go" after re-injuring his ribs in Thursday's preseason finale.

The rib injury was an aggravation, but it sounds like Watkins is merely day to day with over a week to go before Buffalo's opener. The Bills visit the Bears on Sunday, September 7 to start the season. Expect Watkins to play outside at "X" receiver, with Mike Williams at "Z." Both Bills wideouts will be hard to trust on a weekly basis in fantasy due to E.J. Manuel's deficient passing.

The Bengals' website suggests the team "must have thunder and lightning dancing through their heads" following rookie Jeremy Hill's performance in Thursday night's preseason finale.

Given a whopping 26 touches, Hill totaled 160 yards while earning the respect of teammates. Terence Newman and Jason Campbell both praised Hill for the effort, which included a funny-bone injury from which Hill returned to put the game away. Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson noted that Hill's workload "typified what new (OC) Hue Jackson wants," as he demonstrated "power," "speed," "vision," and "creativity," particularly on a weaving 41-yard screen pass where Hill "deked" a safety. Hill also "picked up a couple of blitzes," although he missed one, resulting in a sack of Campbell. Hill's ADP has climbed into the late-ninth-round, where he remains a value pick. Hill and Gio Bernard are expected to share carries this season in the "Thunder and Lightning" committee.

The San Francisco Chronicle's Vic Tafur believes there's a 100 percent chance Derek Carr is the Raiders' starting quarterback Week 1 against the Jets.

All signs have been pointing to this since Carr torched the Seahawks in last night's preseason finale. Coach Dennis Allen, who had previously been adamant that Matt Schaub would start the opener, became more wishy-washy with his comments Thursday night. It's led beat writers to believe Carr is going to get the nod two Sundays from now in the Meadowlands. Schaub's arm is shot, while Carr's is cocked and loaded with big-time talent. In three preseason games, Carr was 30-of-45 passing for 326 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception.

ESPN Boston now has Stevan Ridley making the Patriots' 53-man roster after leaving him off it earlier this week.

Beat writer Mike Reiss "played a hunch" last time around, but now admits it "looks like that was off the mark." Last week, Reiss left Ridley off the roster in favor of Jonas Gray. Gray now gets the boot, and Ridley makes it because rookie James White hasn't shown enough. We expect Vereen to play the vast majority of running back snaps in New England, but Ridley has the early edge for short-yardage and goal-line work with an opportunity to expand his role with good play. We still like Ridley at his eighth-round ADP as a boom-or-bust RB2.

NFL suspended Vikings WR Jerome Simpson three games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Simpson was in New York appealing the ban two weeks ago, apparently to no avail. It's not a huge loss, as Simpson has tumbled down the depth chart to No. 4. Cordarrelle Patterson, Greg Jennings, and Jarius Wright are Minnesota's top three wideouts. Simpson's suspension is the result of a November DUI.

NFL Network's Kimberly Jones reports "it's likely, but not certain" the Giants will use their short-term injured reserve spot on LG Geoff Schwartz (toe).

If so, Schwartz would be out until Week 9. Not good. Schwartz doesn't need surgery and was just classified as week-to-week by the team earlier this week. Reports on Schwartz's timetable have been all over the map. The Giants need him badly. We can't see them using the short-term I.R. spot on Schwartz if he's going to be healthy well before November. He's their best lineman.

Terrance West managed 13 yards on six carries, lost a fumble, and was not targeted in the passing game in Cleveland's preseason finale.

Ben Tate started and rushed three times for eight yards with a touchdown. Tate is locked in as Cleveland's starter entering the year, after clearly outplaying West this preseason. West finishes the exhibition season with 31 carries for 83 yards (2.68 YPC). He's no more than a handcuff for Tate at this stage, albeit a relatively attractive one based on Tate's injury history.
Aug 28 - 10:09 PM

Jeremy Hill rushed 20 times for 90 yards and caught 6-of-6 targets for 70 yards in the Bengals' preseason finale Thursday night.

Starter Gio Bernard rested. Hill was utilized as a true every-down back, while being occasionally spelled by UDFA James Wilder. Hill exited at one point with an elbow injury, but returned to the game. He also blew a blitz pickup, getting Jason Campbell sacked. Core players don't typically get the kind of usage Hill did in exhibition finales, so it's hard to say with any certainty what this means for his Week 1 role. Bernard will be a quality RB2 play against the Ravens. Hill will be a dicey flex option until we get some clarity.
