ESPN's Bob Holtzman reported on NFL Live Wednesday that doctors have advised Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder, ribs) to not return until his partially dislocated rib is completely healed, and "that could take up to six weeks."

It's unwelcome news, though Roethlisberger's timeline remains muddled. ESPN's Adam Schefter hinted there's at least a small chance Roethlisberger could be ready to return by Week 13, while coach Mike Tomlin seemed to scoff at the notion that his quarterback's season was in danger. However, Ben himself has copped to being in so much pain he slept in a chair Monday and Tuesday nights. It's a situation we're unlikely to have a firm grasp on for at least another week. For now, owners should plan on Roethlisberger missing at least two games.

Falcons signed OG Chris Chester, formerly of the Redskins.

He'll slide into Prince Shembo's roster spot. Chester, 32, started every game for the Redskins over the past four seasons, and has experience at all three interior positions. Coached by Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan in Washington 2011-2013, Chester is a fit for Atlanta's new zone-blocking scheme. Last year, Chester fared well as a pass blocker but had run-game struggles as the Redskins implemented a power-rushing attack. He becomes the favorite to start at left guard in Atlanta, with Jake Matthews at left tackle, Joe Hawley at center, Jon Asamoah at right guard, and Ryan Shraeder or Tyler Polumbus at right tackle.

ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi describes Johnny Manziel as a "fish out of water" in the Browns' new offense.

The job of Cleveland's quarterback under new OC John DeFilippo is to manage games and "play within the structure of a conservative game plan." Manziel's strength -- at Texas A&M, at least -- was improvisation. Manziel has reportedly struggled in OTAs practices, and Grossi writes that Johnny Football's "skills don’t coincide with what the Browns are asking of their quarterback." It's looking less and less likely that Manziel will give Josh McCown a serious Week 1 run.

The appeal of Tom Brady's suspension will be heard on June 23.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the appeal hearing could even be pushed back further to June 25. In other words, we won't know the actual length of Brady's (for now, four-game) suspension for nearly another month. The Patriots decided against filing an appeal for the draft picks they lost and money they were fined by Roger Goodell, which may ultimately work in Brady's favor during his individual appeal. Still, the fact that it will be Goodell himself presiding over the appeal can't bode particularly well. In semi-related news, lots of fantasy magazines will be published this summer without a concrete timeline on Brady's ban.

ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi expects Josh McCown to be "unchallenged" as the Browns' starting quarterback.

With the Browns "aiming to control the ball on the ground" and not turn it over, Grossi believes the soon-to-be 36-year-old veteran is out well ahead of Johnny Manziel in what is unlikely to even be a competition. By all accounts, Manziel has been horrid the opening week of OTAs, not knowing where to go with the football and leaving the pocket too much, leading Grossi to think the Browns are "moving on" from Johnny Football. We're still three-plus months away from real games, but McCown seems to be comfortably out in front of Manziel.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Sam Bradford's surgically repaired left knee doesn't appear "remotely close" to full health.

It's our fourth Bradford post of the day. This is just reporter Jeff McLane's take, but he believes "the specter of (Mark) Sanchez under center (in Week 1) becomes more and more of a reality" every day that Bradford's rehab drags on. Neither Bradford nor coach Chip Kelly has attached a date to Bradford's return, though both are trying to project confidence that he'll be ready for training camp. McLane reports Bradford was "clearly favoring" his left leg in Thursday's practice. Bradford has the potential to be a fantasy bargain this season, but he needs to get his health in order over the next two months.

Free agent OT Jake Long visited the Giants on Thursday.

Long's visit, his first since being released by the Rams in March, comes six days after the Newark Star-Ledger reported the Giants might be interested. The G-Men need another body at tackle after LT Will Beatty tore his pec earlier this month. He's a big name, but injuries have rendered Long a shell of his former self. He turned 30 earlier in May.

Montee Ball and C.J. Anderson are "splitting" first-team reps at Broncos OTAs.

The Broncos have a new coaching staff and have pushed a competition at the tailback spot, even if Anderson is seen as the heavy favorite. Although Anderson carries legitimate NFL-rushing-title upside in Gary Kubiak's run-friendly scheme, Anderson also holds risk because he isn't totally assured of opening the season as an every-down workhorse. At very least, fantasy owners who select Anderson early in drafts should be sure to handcuff him with Ball.

Broncos LT Ryan Clady tore his left ACL in Wednesday's practice, and is done for the season.

It's a massive blow for a team with questions all over its offensive line. Second-rounder Ty Sambrailo has been penciled in at right tackle. He played left tackle at Colorado State, but the leap from the Mountain West to AFC West might not be one he's prepared to make on Peyton Manning's blindside. Clady's 2013 replacement, Chris Clark, remains on the Broncos' roster. Michael Schofield is another option. Limited to two games by a Lisfranc sprain in 2013, Clady was essentially replacement-level in his 2014 return. Clady turns 29 in September.

Joseph Randle has received a majority of first-team reps at this week's OTAs.

Randle, the incumbent, has his nose in front of this battle. Darren McFadden did get some reps with the starters on Wednesday, but Randle got more when Tony Romo was taking snaps. Although some have tried to prop up McFadden as a feature back candidate, his tape shows he's not capable of that and the Cowboys have hinted at using him as a "home-run hitting backup." We haven't heard of Ryan Williams or Lance Dunbar getting any first-team reps yet.

Victor Cruz (patellar tear) said he's "about 80 percent there" with his rehab.

"I think it's just a matter of continuing to build the strength for the last leg of it," Cruz said Wednesday. "I’ve been running some routes for about two weeks now, and there’s been no pain, no swelling or anything like that, which are all good signs." It's a very optimistic take from Cruz, as we'd expect from a guy going through rehab. We'll have to wait until training camp to see if his optimism is warranted as he comes off one of the most serious injuries a player can have.

Emmanuel Sanders doesn't anticipate having as much receiving production in the Broncos' new offense.

Sanders ranked fifth in the NFL in receiving yards (1,404) last season. He described run-game guru Gary Kubiak and new OC Rick Dennison's offense as "totally" and "definitely" different from outgoing OC Adam Gase's. "You talk about going from a no-huddle offense to an offense that’s huddling up, to an offense that is predicated off running a football and then throwing it," said Sanders. "It’s different." It's possible that Sanders will be overdrafted in fantasy leagues by owners trying to chase last year's stats. "My goal is really to try to get a 1,000 yards to just help this team win ball games," Sanders added. Prior to 2014, Sanders spent four seasons in the NFL, and never hit 750 receiving yards.
