According to the Daily News, Jets owner Woody Johnson "prefers" Greg McElroy to be the starting quarterback.

McElroy guided the Jets to a win in a relief role last week, so Johnson appears smitten. The report also says that GM Mike Tannenbaum and OC Tony Sparano prefer Mark Sanchez. None of these heavy hitters want Tim Tebow under center. Ultimately, the final decision will be in the hands of head coach Rex Ryan, who has shown silly amounts of loyalty to Sanchez over the last 2.75 seasons. We're expecting a decision here by Wednesday.

ESPN Raiders reporter Bill Williamson predicts Derek Carr will start the Week 1 opener against the Jets.

Coach Dennis Allen had previously been married to Matt Schaub as his Week 1 starter. But following Carr's impressive preseason finale against the Seahawks, Allen was less committed to Schaub, saying he'll have to see where Schaub (elbow, day-to-day) is at health-wise. Carr has a big arm and would give the Raiders' receivers a boost. He and Denarius Moors hooked up for two touchdowns Thursday. Carr gives the Raiders their best chance to win games.

Working as the starter, Derek Carr completed 11-of-13 passes for 143 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in Thursday's preseason finale against the Seahawks.

Carr stood tall in the pocket, threw darts all over the field and led the Raiders on four straight touchdown drives against the defending Super Bowl champs. In other words, he was the anti-Matt Schaub (elbow, day to day). In three preseason outings, Carr is 30-of-45 (66.6%) for 326 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. To steal a quote from Joe Theismann, if this were a competition, there wouldn't be a competition. The Raiders must realize that Carr, not Schaub, gives them the best chance to win football games.

Terrance West managed 13 yards on six carries, lost a fumble, and was not targeted in the passing game in Cleveland's preseason finale.

Ben Tate started and rushed three times for eight yards with a touchdown. Tate is locked in as Cleveland's starter entering the year, after clearly outplaying West this preseason. West finishes the exhibition season with 31 carries for 83 yards (2.68 YPC). He's no more than a handcuff for Tate at this stage, albeit a relatively attractive one based on Tate's injury history.

Jeremy Hill rushed 20 times for 90 yards and caught 6-of-6 targets for 70 yards in the Bengals' preseason finale Thursday night.

Starter Gio Bernard rested. Hill was utilized as a true every-down back, while being occasionally spelled by UDFA James Wilder. Hill exited at one point with an elbow injury, but returned to the game. He also blew a blitz pickup, getting Jason Campbell sacked. Core players don't typically get the kind of usage Hill did in exhibition finales, so it's hard to say with any certainty what this means for his Week 1 role. Bernard will be a quality RB2 play against the Ravens. Hill will be a dicey flex option until we get some clarity.

Teddy Bridgewater completed 4-of-9 passes for 17 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' preseason finale Thursday night.

The 32nd overall pick in May's draft wraps up the exhibition season 30-of-49 passing for 283 yards and a 5:0 TD-to-INT ratio. His passer rating was 111.2. Matt Cassel remains entrenched as Minnesota's Week 1 starter, and should have a somewhat long leash to open the season. But once he starts stumbling -- and that'll most likely happen at some point -- the calls for Teddy will begin.

E.J. Manuel completed 3-of-7 passes for 56 yards in the Bills' preseason finale Friday night.

Clearly worried about their sophomore quarterback, Manuel was allowed to handle three drives in the exhibition finale. He didn't deliver, while losing Sammy Watkins to a rib aggravation. Manuel wraps the preseason 50-of-82 passing (60.2 percent) for 517 yards (6.30 YPA), one touchdown, three turnovers, and six sacks taken. We'll be streaming fantasy defenses against the Bills this year.

Sammy Watkins was forced from Thursday's preseason finale with a rib injury.

Watkins is technically questionable, but obviously won't return. Watkins got hurt trying to corral a slant that was "a good yard and a half ahead of him." E.J. Manuel "stared him down the whole way." Watkins then headed to the locker room. It's unclear if Watkins aggravated his previous rib issue, or suffered a new injury. It's ominous all around. Watkins hasn't shown outside of practice this summer, while Manuel has looked like one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL.
Aug 28 - 7:39 PM

Chris Polk (hamstring) is inactive for the Eagles' preseason finale.

Polk returned to practice last Saturday, but still isn't healthy enough to perform in a game setting. It's a potentially ominous sign for Polk's roster chances. He's going to end up missing the entire preseason. The Philly Inquirer recently forecasted Polk to make the final 53, but that's certainly become a question mark with Henry Josey and Matthew Tucker playing well. LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles are locks, and Kenjon Barner may be, too.

Blake Bortles started Thursday's preseason finale against the Falcons, completing 4-of-6 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Bortles' score was a 57-yard strike to fellow rookie Marqise Lee. Bortles looked ahead of schedule all preseason, and finishes 32-of-51 for 521 yards (10.2 YPA), two touchdowns and zero interceptions. It's looking less and less likely that the Jags will be able to follow through on their plan to "redshirt" Bortles this season. Starter Chad Henne simply isn't good enough.

The NFL has stiffened its penalties for domestic violence, instituting a six-game suspension for a first-time offense and "lifetime ban" for a second.

It's a direct response to the blistering criticism the league received after banning Ray Rice for only two games earlier this summer. Commissioner Roger Goodell admitted he "didn't get it right" in the Rice case. Now, a first time domestic-violence offense is no longer viewed as less serious than smoking marijuana. For a "lifetime" ban, an offender can "petition for reinstatement after one year."

Cowboys waived CB B.W. Webb.

It's an admission of failure from owner/GM Jerry Jones, who made Webb the No. 114 overall pick of last year's draft. The move is in spite of the Cowboys' depth issues at cornerback. Webb was routinely roasted on his 185 defensive snaps as a rookie, and hadn't looked improved in the spring or preseason. His age (24) and draft pedigree should get him another look in relatively short order, however.
