Cowboys placed CB Orlando Scandrick (hand) on season-ending injured reserve.

Scandrick broke his hand on Thanksgiving Day against the Redskins and was given a 6-8 week timetable for return. He would have only been available if the Cowboys made a deep playoff run. NT Rob Callaway was signed from the practice squad in a corresponding move.

Philly Voice's Jimmy Kempski suggests Wendell Smallwood could win the Eagles' starting running back job.

Kempski calls it a "surprise development," but perhaps one Smallwood has earned by being "the best back in camp by a significant margin." While Smallwood beating out LeGarrette Blount now looks like a serious possibility, regardless of who wins the "starting job," Darren Sproles is likely to lead the backfield in touches. Blount is now looking like a fantasy pick to avoid.

Speaking Monday, coach Todd Bowles was noncommittal on Matt Forte's (hamstring) availability for Week 1.

Forte, who turns 32 in December, has missed almost all of training camp with a strained hamstring for the second straight year, and battled knee problems toward the end of last season. If Forte can't play in Week 1 against the Bills, Bilal Powell would be the Jets' feature back and rookie Elijah McGuire would be second string. Forte's fit on the tanking Jets' roster remains awkward.

Eric Ebron (hamstring) is still missing Lions practice.

He's essentially been out with July 31. By all accounts, the Lions were counting on Ebron to take a big leap in his fourth NFL season after finishing top ten amongst tight ends in both catches and yards last year despite missing three games. At very least, the missed cap reps have cost Ebron chances to build red-zone chemistry with Matthew Stafford in practice.

Paxton Lynch has lost the Broncos' quarterback battle to Trevor Siemian.

For the second straight year, 2016 first-round pick Lynch was unable to unseat 2015 seventh-rounder Siemian despite superior theoretical tools. Lynch has a big arm and plus athleticism, but he has shown no ability to deliver accurate passes downfield. The Broncos may have to go back to the drawing board at quarterback next offseason. Siemian has a low ceiling, and Lynch isn't cutting it.

The Broncos have named Trevor Siemian their starting quarterback.

As expected. Siemian has outplayed 2016 first-round pick Paxton Lynch since the day Lynch was drafted, and Lynch made no tangible progress in his second NFL training camp. The Broncos envision Siemian as a capped-ceiling placeholder quarterback, but he gives the team its best chance to win now. The Broncos should probably look into acquiring Tyrod Taylor to add more talent to the room. Lynch has shown zero ability to move the offense.

Saints coach Sean Payton said Willie Snead played into the fourth quarter Sunday because he wanted to get the receiver more reps after missing some practice time with injury in camp.

Payton told the same story about Coby Fleener. The reasoning makes sense, but it was still odd to see Snead playing at a time usually reserved for third stringers and camp bodies, especially after he was listed behind Ted Ginn on the unofficial depth chart. Snead remains the best fantasy bet behind Michael Thomas, but his usage Sunday raises at least some concern.

NFL.com reports Jaguars DE Dante Fowler has been charged with three misdemeanors stemming from his July 18 arrest.

According to court records, Fowler is accused of "punching" a man after a "brief verbal confrontation." He also stepped on the alleged victim's glasses. He has been charged with battery, criminal mischief, and petty theft. Fowler's arraignment is scheduled for September 11, the Monday after Week 1.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Alex Smith is the unquestioned starter.

"It's Alex's job," Reid said. "There's no gray area with that." No. 10 overall pick Patrick Mahomes has created the buzz this offseason, but Smith has been quietly excellent, completing 12-of-15 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. Unless he falls completely on his face, Smith will be the starter all season and remains an undervalued asset in deeper fantasy leagues.

Cam Newton (shoulder) is throwing in team drills during Monday's practice.

NFL Network's Tiffany Blackmon reported Newton would up his practice workload this week, and it appears that has happened. It is still unclear if he will get in any action this preseason, but he remains on track for Week 1.

DeAndre Hopkins has not practiced since August 9 because of a hand injury.

The injury is not believed to be serious, but it is slightly concerning Hopkins has now missed over a week of practice and a preseason game. Missing Monday's practice also suggests the receiver may not be ready for the "dress rehearsal" on Saturday. Hopkins still should be expected to return before Week 1, but this is a situation to monitor.

Anquan Boldin told SiriusXM NFL Radio's Ross Tucker he is "done with the sport of football."

Boldin decided to retire after spending 13 days with the Bills. There was speculation he would be willing to sign on with a contender, but he says his "passion is elsewhere." If this is the end, Boldin finishes his career with 1,076 catches for 13,779 yards and 82 touchdowns. Those numbers rank ninth, 14th, and 23rd all-time respectively.
