Bears coach Lovie Smith is optimistic that MLB Brian Urlacher (hamstring) will be able to return in Week 17 at Detroit.

"We are definitely thinking that way," Smith said after Sunday's win over the Cardinals. "I would just say he's making a lot of improvement." Urlacher was inactive against Arizona, but participated in an extensive pre-game workout and "looked to be at full speed." The Bears need to beat the Lions in Week 17 and have the Packers beat the Vikings in order to make the postseason.

Suspended RB Doug Martin rushed five times for 30 yards and a touchdown and caught 2-of-3 targets for 11 yards in the Bucs' second preseason game.

Martin started for the second straight week and caught two checkdowns on Tampa Bay’s first drive. He made a sharp cut in the backfield on his first carry for a six-yard gain, then beat the Jaguars’ defense around the corner on a goal-line score. Martin is suspended for Weeks 1-3, but he shown impressive quickness and cut-back ability in August. He's worthy of a middle-round fantasy pick.

Allen Robinson caught 4-of-8 targets for 34 yards in the Jaguars' second preseason game.

Blake Bortles targeted Robinson deep down the left sideline on the Jaguars’ first drive, but the predictably errant pass was uncatchable. Robinson did come down with a wild Bortles pass into heavy traffic for an 11-yard gain and showed his RAC ability on a ten-yard bubble screen, but Bortles missed Robinson twice more on underthrows, bringing out the Jaguars’ boo birds. The good news is Bortles targeted Robinson relentlessly, sending 7-of-13 pass attempts in his direction. Nevertheless, it's a reminder that Robinson's fantasy value is at the mercy of a shot-confidence quarterback.

Blake Bortles completed 8-of-13 passes for 65 yards in the Jaguars' second preseason game.

Bortles didn't commit any turnovers, but he came awfully close on several occasions. He also flat-out missed Allen Robinson on three and arguably four big-play chances, incessantly under- and over-throwing the Jaguars' top receiver when Robinson had created separation down the sidelines and over the middle. Bortles was booed repeatedly by the Jaguars' home crowd. Dealing with shot confidence, we'd bet against Bortles starting 16 games this season.

TMZ Sports reports Raiders CB Sean Smith was arrested and charged with felony assault on Thursday.

The incident allegedly occurred over the July 4 holiday. Officials are saying Smith attacked hi sister's boyfriend, beating and stomping on the victim's head. Smith is officially being charged with "felony assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury and battery with serious bodily injury." He could face up to seven years in prison. NFL Network reported earlier Thursday that Smith has been benched and lost his starting job to T.J. Carrie.

Tyrod Taylor completed 8-of-18 passes for 53 yards and two interceptions in Thursday's second preseason game.

Taylor's first interception came from a deflection on a blitz. His second was an underthrow on a broken play. Beyond the two interceptions, Taylor was under pressure on a large portion of his throws. This was not an encouraging outing from the Bills' first-team offense. Taylor's first game without Sammy Watkins was a disaster. It's going to be a trying year in Buffalo.

DeVante Parker caught 1-of-4 targets for 16 yards in the Dolphins' second preseason game.

Parker drew four targets from Jay Cutler in only two drives. The stats don't pop on paper, but one of the duo's missed connections was a 31-yard completion called back by holding. Parker also muffed a screen on 3rd-and-forever. Frankly, Cutler looked to be playing pitch and catch with Parker like he did Alshon Jeffery in Chicago. The Dolphins have spent the entire offseason talking Parker up. They walked the walk on Thursday.
Aug 17 - 8:05 PM

Jay Cutler completed 3-of-6 passes for 24 yards in Thursday's preseason game.

The numbers don't tell the whole story, as Cutler had a 31-yard completion to DeVante Parker called back by penalty. The Dolphins also got trapped into a 3rd-and-27 thanks to a pair of holding calls. Cutler came out assertive, aggressively throwing the ball down the field and locking onto Parker like he was an Alshon Jeffery clone. It was two drives in a mid-August exhibition game, but it was promising. The Dolphins will remain run heavy, but their passing attack is going to look much different under aggressive Cutler than timid Ryan Tannehill.

Seahawks signed C Justin Britt to a three-year, $27 million extension through 2020.

He's the first Seahawks offensive lineman drafted during the Pete Carroll/John Schneider era to get a second contract in Seattle. Britt spent the first two years of his career bouncing between guard and tackle before settling in at center last season. He was a bright spot along an otherwise dismal line. 2017 will be Britt's age-26 campaign.

Thomas Rawls will miss Friday's preseason game with a "minor" ankle issue.

Eddie Lacy will start in his place. Rawls has been running ahead of Lacy with the first-team offense for over a week, but this gives Lacy a big opportunity to move back out in front. Rawls has earned universally positive reviews this summer, but any ankle issue is a concern after the catastrophic injury that ended Rawls' 2015.

49ers ILB Reuben Foster is dealing with a "mild AC joint sprain" in his surgically-repaired shoulder.

The 49ers are insisting it's a "completely different" injury than Foster's rotator cuff issue, but we'll see how true that ends up being. The team re-signed ILB Shayne Skov on Thursday. Foster was just officially anointed a starter on Tuesday. He will supposedly play in the 49ers' second preseason game on Saturday.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Rams DT Aaron Donald is threatening to extend his holdout into the regular season.

One source tells Schefter Donald could hold out the entire season. That's extremely unlikely, but speaks to a negotiating process that's currently going nowhere. Donald is ready to play hardball. The Rams' season kicks off in 24 days.
