Cardinals LT Potter inactive vs. 49ers

Cardinals LT Nate Potter (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's Week 17 game versus the 49ers.

Potter will be replaced in the starting lineup by turnstile D'Anthony Batiste. It's great news for 49ers OLB Aldon Smith who is chasing the single-season sack record. The rest of the Arizona inactives are WRs Early Doucet and LaRon Byrd, QB John Skelton, FB Anthony Sherman, OL Mike Gibson, and DE Ronald Talley.

Report: Hernandez 'directly tied' to murder

A law enforcement official tells FOX Boston that Aaron Hernandez "appears to be directly tied to the homicide" of "associate" Odin Lloyd in North Attleboro, Mass.

There are many important things to remember here, namely FOX 25 is not a typical Rotoworld source, and Hernandez has yet to be charged with a crime. That being said, the storm clouds appear to be gathering for the star tight end. FOX Boston reports Hernandez, Lloyd and two other men left a Boston-area bar in a car driven by Hernandez on the night of the homicide, but Odin was the only passenger not to make it back to Hernandez's house. Further, forensic evidence has reportedly placed a vehicle driven by Hernandez at "one of the crime scenes in (the) case." Police are still searching for a second vehicle. Thus far, Hernandez has declined comment.

49ers sign OC Greg Roman to 2-year extension

49ers signed OC Greg Roman to a two-year contract extension through 2015.

It's well deserved for one of the league's most creative offensive minds, but shouldn't prevent him from bolting for a head-coaching job next offseason. Roman might already be a head man if not for the 49ers' Super Bowl run. Although coach Jim Harbaugh deserves a ton of the credit for San Francisco's ever-evolving, visionary offense, it's Roman who keeps the trains running on time.

49ers, Justin Smith agree to 2-year extension

49ers signed RE Justin Smith to a two-year extension through 2015.

Smith was entering the final season of the six-year, $45 million contract he signed in 2008. Expect this extension to kill two birds with one stone; soften his 2013 cap hit and keep Smith in town through his age-36 season. Smith's 2012 late-year effectiveness was sapped by a triceps tear, but he's still one of the game's best 3-4 ends. He graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 1 player at the position in 2011, 2010, and 2009.

Arians: 'No doubt' Mendenhall is the starter

Coach Bruce Arians said there's "no doubt" Rashard Mendenhall is the Cardinals' No. 1 running back.

During OTAs and minicamp, Mendenhall ran as the clear feature back. Arians appears to have zero interest in giving Ryan Williams, Stepfan Taylor or Andre Ellington a legit chance to compete. "He took me personally to a Super Bowl, and I know what he can bring to the table as a runner and a pass protector and also a receiver," Arians said of his former first-round pick in Pittsburgh. "He's an every-down player. And I think he's looking forward to having an outstanding season."

Vernon Davis practicing exclusively with WRs

Vernon Davis practiced exclusively with the wide receivers during 49ers minicamp.

With Michael Crabtree (Achilles') out until at least Week 12, Anquan Boldin only capable of playing the slot, and a host of question marks battling at X receiver, we knew Davis was going to have a big pass-game role. By learning to play wideout, he'll have more scheme versatility on Sundays. Davis can line up as an in-line tight end, move tight end, in the slot and out wide. The 49ers' dominant line frees him from too many blocking responsibilities. They'll remain a run-first team, but when they pass expect Davis to be featured.

Patriots 'holding out hope' on Gronkowski

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Patriots are "holding out hope" Rob Gronkowski (back surgery, arm surgery) will be ready for Week 1.

As to be expected. At this point, there's no reason to unilaterally assume Gronk won't be ready for Week 1 — two and a half months is a long time — but there's still far more reason to believe he won't be ready than will be ready. We're unlikely to get a good read on Gronk's regular season status before mid-August. All we know for now is that he'll start camp on the active/PUP list.

Ponder may have shaky in-season job security

ESPN's Adam Schefter suggested on NFL Live that Christian Ponder will be in danger of losing his job this season if the Vikings begin to struggle.

"There are enough people around the league that believe Matt Cassel is good enough to challenge Ponder," stated Schefter, adding that Cassel "could unseat Ponder at some point this season." Although Schefter confirmed Ponder won't lose his job before Week 1, he called it a "situation that bears watching." Ponder endured a brutal nine-game stretch last season (Weeks 7-16) where he completed 140-of-245 passes (57.1 percent) for just 1,267 yards (5.17 YPA), and a 7:8 TD-to-INT ratio with two lost fumbles. Ponder was serviceable to solid (67.2 percent, 7.01 YPA, 11:4) in his other seven starts.

'Some sense' Clady, Broncos will strike deal

CBS' Jason La Canfora reports there is "some sense" the Broncos and unsigned franchise player LT Ryan Clady will hammer out a long-term deal before next month's deadline.

La Canfora expects talks to come down to the July 15 deadline, but believes the Broncos are "edging closer to reality on what the cost will be." Clady is believed to be seeking Joe Thomas or Jason Peters money, which would put him in the neighborhood of $35-$45 million guaranteed. The Broncos would be wise not to upset the man tasked with protecting Peyton Manning's blindside.

Desmond Bishop to visit Chiefs after Vikings

Free agent ILB Desmond Bishop is scheduled to visit with the Chiefs Thursday.

Bishop is meeting with the Vikings on Tuesday. By arranging a visit with another suitor, his agent exerts some leverage over Minnesota. If they want him to help fill their gaping need at inside linebacker, they better get a deal done before he leaves town. Bishop would provide the Chiefs with a significant upgrade over Akeem Jordan at the inside 'backer spot next to Derrick Johnson.

Vincent Brown 'spectacular' during offseason

The Union-Tribune says Vincent Brown was "just plain spectacular" during OTAs and minicamp.

We can now safely say that the broken ankle that ruined Brown's 2012 season is water under the bridge. And since the Chargers are installing a more precise offense that de-emphasizes the deep ball, Brown has a realistic shot to beat out Malcom Floyd for the starting Z receiver spot. He's a far superior route-runner. Brown has plenty of sleeper appeal in upcoming fantasy drafts.

Jonathan Stewart in doubt for start of camp

GM Dave Gettleman admitted that he doesn't know if Jonathan Stewart (ankles) will be ready for training camp.

"We'll see. Time will tell," Gettleman said. Stewart is coming off surgery on both of his ankles and did not participate in any of the offseason program. DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert split the first-team reps. If Stewart can't participate fully in camp, the likelihood of a full-blown committee to start the regular season will increase. The Carolina backfield is as cloudy as ever.
