Colts LG Joe Reitz did not return after sustaining a head injury in Week 17.

He may have to go through the NFL's testing protocol. Reitz also left the Week 13 game with a head injury, appearing dazed while being carted off the field. Backup Jeff Linkenbach would be a liability if forced to start at Baltimore on Sunday.

The Cardinals have brought in Dr. Jen Welter as a training camp/preseason inside linebackers coaching intern.

Welter is the first ever female coach in the NFL. Just about four months after the NFL hired its first woman official in Sarah Thomas, coach Bruce Arians is giving Welter a chance to impress as a coach. Welter is a Doctor of Sports Psychology and had been working as a coach for the Texas Revolution of the Indoor Football League. Arians openly supported woman coaches at the owners meetings.

Coach Mike Zimmer said Monday that Cordarrelle Patterson's consistency has remained an issue on the practice field.

"He'll have really good days, and then he'll have some not-so-good days," Zimmer said. "Really, I think what he needs to do is just the consistency every single day and the consistency in studying, the consistency in getting extra help that he needs if he needs it, running the routes the same all the time." Behind Charles Johnson, Mike Wallace, and Jarius Wright on the depth chart, Patterson is unlikely to contribute in fantasy this year. Added Zimmer, "To me, the biggest thing with him is that: Does he want to be 'Flash' or does he want to be a great receiver? I'm not trying to dog him or anything, but that's really what it is."

Asked Monday about Adrian Peterson's workload, coach Mike Zimmer replied "He'll get as much as he can take."

"Adrian's going to get the heavy workload," said Zimmer, a defensive-minded coach. "As much as he can take, and as much as he can handle in all the things that we're doing. Obviously, we're going to have to spell him at times like you do a lot of guys. But we get down on the goal line, and we're probably not pulling him out, you know? He's our best player, and we're going to continue to use him." Peterson's age (30) and lost 2014 season may be concerns for his 2015 outlook. His projected workload in an ascending offense is a major plus.

Suspended RB Le'Veon Bell was a full participant for the start of Steelers camp on Monday.

Bell missed last January's playoff loss to Baltimore with a hyperextended knee, and recently said he wasn't 100-percent healthy. Per beat writer Jeremy Fowler, however, Le'Veon looked "noticeably explosive" on the first day of camp. Fowler added that Le'Veon "says he's in the best shape of his life, and he's not lying," showing quick feet and straight-line speed in practice.

NFL.com's Rand Getlin reports free agent Chris Johnson's player rep has been "in contact with" Dallas.

Getlin says Johnson is "feeling explosive," and "ready to get back on the field." The report comes 10 days after CBS' Jason La Canfora said he "wouldn't be shocked" if CJ?K landed in Dallas. Johnson is well past his prime, but wouldn't be a bad flier for the RB-deficient Cowboys to take. Johnson arguably has (much) more left in the tank than Darren McFadden.

Speaking Monday, Browns coach Mike Pettine declined to guarantee that Josh McCown will be the team's starter.

"I'm not guaranteeing Josh will start against the Jets (in Week 1)," Pettine said. The comments came in the same breath that Pettine called Johnny Manziel the Browns' "clearcut" backup, but hint at a competition nonetheless. We don't doubt the Browns badly want McCown to be their starter, but they've seen the same 2014 tape everyone else has. It's quite possible McCown is done, and simply won't beat out Manziel.

Panthers OT Jonathan Martin is retiring.

He's just 25. Per NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Martin needs back surgery, and he's opted to walk away instead of going under the knife. It further thins Carolina's alarmingly-weak tackle corps, but Martin was far from assured of a roster spot. The No. 42 overall pick of the 2012 draft by the Dolphins, Martin struggled mightily whenever he was on an NFL field.

Browns coach Mike Pettine calls Johnny Manziel the team's "clearcut" No. 2 quarterback on the eve of training camp.

It jibes with everything we heard all offseason, though Pettine did decline to unequivocally name Josh McCown his Week 1 starter. Manziel was an unmitigated disaster as a rookie, but McCown was arguably the league's worst quarterback when he took the field for the Bucs. With Manziel supposedly practicing and behaving better, the door is still ajar for him to make starts.

ESPN's Dan Graziano reports free agent Osi Umenyiora is preparing to retire.

Per Graziano, Umenyiora and the G-Men are discussing a "ceremonial one-day contract so he can retire a Giant." Umenyiora had previously said he had "zero" plans to retire, but he's been greeted by crickets in free agency. Going on 34, Umenyiora could muster just 2.5 sacks in 347 snaps for the Falcons last season. Umenyiora spent 2003-12 with the Giants.

Chiefs WR Albert Wilson is opening camp as a starter opposite Jeremy Maclin.

Wilson is battling third-rounder Chris Conley for No. 2 duties. A 2014 undrafted free agent, Wilson steadily climbed the depth chart as a rookie before catching 12 passes over Kansas City's final four games. Wilson offers little-to-no re-draft appeal behind Travis Kelce and Jeremy Maclin for targets, but could make some noise as a cheap best-ball pick and/or DFS play this season.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus tells Bleacher Report's Jason Cole he's talking with the Colts about a long-term contract for T.Y. Hilton.

Per Cole, Hilton is seeking Dez Bryant/Demaryius Thomas money, which is $14 million per year. That might seem high for the pint-sized wideout, but the salary cap is expected to take a significant jump in 2016. Cole expects a deal to get done "relatively soon." We're not as sure, especially after the Colts drafted Hilton-clone Phillip Dorsett. Indy may want to take care of Andrew Luck before handing out any other long-term deals.
